Purple Rain Remaster or a sneaker

So this is a point I raised last week after Prince played at the 30th anniversary of the Michael Jordan sneaker.

You know that I love Prince and his music. Whatever he releases, I will always buy. Yes "buy". I don't mind cuz it's the continuation of my favourite artist. I believe we will see some kind of remaster of Purple Rain, I just don't know when.

But what's irritating me is that Prince will go and celebrate the 30th anniversary of a damn sneaker and not celebrate his career highpoint and decade defining album from 31 years ago that won him Grammies, American Music Awards and an Oscar. And on top of that, it made him a shed load of money.

What's up with that?

If Warner Bros. decided to throw a party celebrating
Purple Rain and got D'Angelo to perform do you think
Prince would show up?

It'd be awesome to tie in a Jordan trainer to any potential remaster. Might as well go big. Not sure why it needs to be either or.

It's easy to understand. Prince doesn't look at his music like fans do. For Prince he produced, arranged, composed and performed the music. He has memories from that period and is content with having the album as released stand alone without any commemoration of its cultural touchstone in pop culture. Secondly, Prince always wants people to celebrate his latest albums with the reverence as albums from the first 10 years as a recording artist. The quality of the music and fan subjectivity determines the aforementioned. Lastly, Prince is still an active recording artist and most of the time remasters are released when that artist has hung it up or in semi-retirement. As long as Prince still putting out new music, he will never fully support a legacy project.

LOL

He won't celebrate the anniversary of one of his best albums but he celebrated a shoe...

and then HE KICKED THAT JORDAN SHOE RIGHT IN OUR ASSES !

Tony M needs to put a foot in his ass.

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

His set-lists in his live shows tell us a different story.

Albums (recording artist). Concerts (live performer). Those are two distinct entities. Who knows why he doesn't play music from his current albums in concert, but playing older songs from a certain era with different musicians in concert is different from promoting a remaster of a legendary album where expectations from fans wouldn't stop at providing fans with enhanced of Purple Rain album with value-added outtakes. I think from P's point of view, expectations would be to reunite with the Revolution, play songs as they were performed way back when, and fans would keep piling on realistic and unrealistic expectations for the project Prince may be unwilling to meet.

Horseshit.

Paul McCartney has arguably been busier than Prince in the last several years in terms of releasing new music, ranging from contemporary albums to ballets, to live recordings & soundtracks to videogames. Oh & he regularly tours, globally, putting on 3.5 hour shows, which is pretty damn good for someone his age. He's far from having "hung it up" & has managed to release a number of archival projects that have included bonus discs, rarities, DVDs, etc. Everything fans would want from Prince.

Bruce Springsteen has constantly released new music alongside archival projects (Born to Run 30th, The Promise, Tracks, etc. any number of EPs & Record Store Day releases.)

There are other examples. You can defend Prince all you like, but the reality is clearly somewhat different.

Both Springsteen and McCartney have released deluxe editions of albums, sometimes paried with outtakes, alternate takes, and even blu-ray video supplements. All with pro art direction.

But that's all with the talents of a major label.

What's WB?

Oh, I forgot, they're that small time indie label with no industry clout whatsoever that Prince signed with last year & has been dicking around with this rumored remaster for months now.

He hasn't maintained a relationship with any major label, but signs up with one for each album temporarily. That gives him freedom but it also seems to keep him from A-list creative promo/production support that can evolve and work with him.

Bob Dylan ... Bob Dylan... Bob Dylan...

there's an artist / label relationship that has shown the world how it's done.

Alternating new releases that manage to be successful both critically and commercially (his latest, 'Shadows In The Night', lauded almost universally by critics, and entered the (UK at least) chart at number 1)... with 'Bootleg Series' archival releases that are put together with incredible care and attention to detail, often with price tags to match.

Dylan is an artist known for 'never looking back' in his artistic endeavours, but one who still manages to get out of his own way and deliver what the fans want. He realises that there's good money to be made from it, and it extends and deepens his musical legacy.

Imagine if Prince was to take a leaf from this book.... imagine the happiness that could be shared and enjoyed all round.

Prince more than any other major musician and recording artist, hold his creative works close to the vest. Point well taken on the Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen examples, but all I'm saying is that Prince has shown a detachment to the period that produced the Purple Rain album and cultural touchstones through his interviews and visible indifference about celebrating its anniversary. So its not surprising to me that he'll play a gig for Michael Jordan.

I think P is tryting to make it as difficult and painful as can be for WB so they'll give up on him and give him back the licencing rights on the masters they just gave him back. Just a personal theory though.

In that scenario if WB gave Prince the licencing rights to his masters-all bets are off if those remasters ever materialize.

Hes been celebrating it for 11 years now. You can't pay them man to quit playing those tired ass 80s songs. He has stripped his whole musical catalogue down to a dozen songs that EVERY single damn concert has now. Its just sickening to hear him live now!!

Lets go crazy

purple rain

raspberry fucking beret

take me with u

litte red corvette

u got the look

kiss

sign o the times

controversy

1999

cream

musicology

and then you throw in a few wack ass covers and that is his tour for the past 11 years!!

I am so sick of these songs!! To me all he does now is celebrate his past. I miss the days where he put out an album and played the album and mixed in other stuff even if it was from the above list at least there is newer stuff too. The songs above are so tired and emotionless its just collecting a paycheck and it loos and sounds like it nowadays. A remaster will probably makes things even worse as far as the tour!!

Close to the vest? Perhaps if that vest was designed by a schizophrenic. You can't go to a Prince concert & not hear Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Take Me With You, etc. But where's he holding Endorphinmachine? Pheromone? Shockadelica?

He played a gig for Michael Jordan/Nike because of the payday.

Oh right, you know the details of his latest contract with WB. And surely they learned nothing whatsoever from their previous dealings with their former "Slave."

Are you saying you can't put 2 and 2 together from all the albums and tours for the past 15 years, even when Prince himself and trade magazines have explained it in interviews? Warners staff, by the way, are different now than the ones that worked in the 80's and early 90's. So no, they haven't dealt with Prince.

Two things worth noting:

1) JW's don't believe in "special honor and worship" because it could turn people away from God.

2) The album 1999 was certainly worthy of an anniversary edition, yet it never happened ... so why would it be any different for PR?

And let's not forget, prince is a HUGE Jordan fan. It is a quick buck(s) for him though and that's the bottom line.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
