Katy Perry's "Birthday" is sounding like which Prince song?

My ear doesn't seem well trained enough to recognize which Prince song it reminds me of. But I swear, I hear alot of vibes in that song that remind me of something Prince would record in his early days.

A bit of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" maybe. Definitely has an pre-Dirty Mind sound to it. Also, I think there might be an "associated" act/paisley park (Taja Seville?) song that its pulling from but I cant place it exactly.

It doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to any Prince song in existence, now I must seek bandages and gauze for my eardrums. Thanks for inflicting that upon us.

Before reaching the chorus it does have an 80s synth-pop vibe to it. I'd say it sounds vaguely Dirty Mind-ish, though I'm sure it's a coincidence.

Well done OP, your thread's given Kenkamken an opportunity to feel ever so superior about their taste in music. Maybe you should make a thread about a Justin Bieber song that sounds Princey; I know how much the internet loves Bieber!

Well, since I always like to read your comments before trying to "cheat" and going deeper into research you can call me all sort of things. But this time it seems I wasn't that far off. Again, just drop some Prince titles it may sound like. I got nothing. Ok, we got "I Wanna be Your Lover" (points emesem cool ), but I feel like there are a few more.

"Critics, as well as Perry herself, have compared the track to works by Prince and Mariah Carey"

"Since its release, its musical composition has been strongly compared to that of other works of Prince and duo Wendy and Lisa."

Wendy & Lisa? Nahhh.

I can hear a vague resemblence to IWBYL just because of the beat and guitar, but that could be a million songs too, it's a very slight resemblence to 78-80 Prince, very, very slight.

My bad! I didn't realise you were joking! Well, obviously I didn't literally think your ears were bleeding either, but you know what I mean.

Anyway, I do have a sense of humour. Have you heard the joke about the woman who asked her lover why his organ was so small?

"California Girls" + (maybe "IWBYL") + "Birth day Cake" (Rihanna's sexual symbolism) Chorus-phrasing like ("Party in The U.S.A."...) and ("Last Friday Night")...

Beat seems a little too fast for the amount of lyrics...

It might've worked better as a ballad..

Kp has referenced dirty mind before but I can't remember for which track. The singles all seem to be novelty based . It doesn't make for music you'd care about. I see why it sells

Never heard any resemblance... It is also like the worst song on her otherwise decent album, can't believe it became a single.

Apart from the dirty mind-esque guitar sound, I don't think it sounds like any Prince's songs.

Dr. Luke wrote and produced Birthday. If you've heard his other works, you'll know that Birthday is unmistakably his.

You're thinking of California Girls, which bears a strinking resemblence to I Wanna Be Your Lover. At least the guitar part.

I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea
I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b

Nope. It's this song. And I like it alot. Although I hate the character Katy Perry, this is miles better than Dark Horse. Don't let me get started on that colossal piece of shit mad

Why would anyone over twelve listen to this pro-tools muzak is beyond me.

Which Prince song? "Pooh Pooh" comes to mind.

I hear W&L more than I hear Prince. Perhaps because of the vocals. Perry is a much better singer than either W or L though.

The wooh is on the one!

Great detective work (and good ears) Wolfie! I was trying to find a more direct quote from her but so far the closest I found was a twitter shout-out from October 2013: https://twitter.com/katyp...3078934529
.
I also spotted this:

Katy Perry's New Single RUMORS
By Mitch Thorpe, Mstarz writer | Apr 03, 2014
...During her 'Prism' preview event this past September in Los Angeles, Katy got the chance to showcase all the songs from 'Prism' for journalists, radio programmers, and industry exes. Here she described ["Birthday"] as an upbeat Prince-like pop-funk workout that is a nod to music duo, Wendy and Lisa, who worked closely with Prince.
.
Can't say I'm hearing a W&L influence. Katy maybe looks a little like Lisa on the cover of the Prism but her singing doesn't sound to me like her or Wendy. Then again, I'm not as familiar with their songs as I should be. boxed
.
Think I'm with NouveauDance on this one. The resemblence to Prince is a little vague to me, but it is reminiscent of the light disco of Prince from '79. ("Sugar" by Maroon 5 sounds very much like "Birthday", but "Sugar" has a much more obvious Prince influence). The double entrendres in "Birthday" to me are a closer match with P's general style of lyric-writing than the music is, but like others here, I'm also hearing a little similarity with IWBYL, especially on the guitar part.
.
"Legendary Lovers," also on Katy's Prism album, reminds me of Prince and his early 90's work--prince album comes to mind--with Indian music, and layered vocals and key change (?) on the vocals in the breakdown found in the latter half of the song.
