It took producer Chris Thomas a great deal of work to make the Sex Pistols sound like they did.

I took the most popular example in punk, since our friends eclem5 and TASKAE could use a little musicology lessons.
You guys are so moving, trying to save from the trash this poor "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia" reboot.

Ronnie Talk 2 Russia is not great because it was composed in 1981, it's great because :

- The man screams his lungs out, like armaggedon means something.

- Repetitive lyrics, which is one of the major requisites for being qualified as "punk".

- Electro-Rockabilly is a style that only Prince has attempted and successfully realized.
- The machine gun effects are top notch.

- Great solo.

Marz does not suck because it was composed in 2015, it sucks because :

- Vocally, it's a decal from Plastic Bertrand's Ça Plane Pour Moi.

- No one cares about punk in 2015.

- Instead of a guitar solo, we get a dull bridge.

- The lyrics are childish, and carry no real politic message of any kind.

- "Everybody in the world wants to be a star, Few got what it takes to get that far" : further proof that Prince is still mentally stuck in the eighties.

No, Prince, in 2015, no sane person wants to be a star anymore and add more garbage to the system.
And if you're talking to youngsters addicted to reality shows or fake competitions like American Idol,
well, they're not listening to you, so what's the point?

Now Ronnie clocks at 1:58. Marz clocks at 1:48.

There is a lot more happening on Ronnie, and not because od these extra 10 seconds.
The only "punk" thing Marz can reclaim is a Ramones song timing, that's all.

Now, on haterz :

I think you are mistaken a great deal. Like The Velvet Underground made everyone who bought their first album

to pull up a rock band of their own, similarly Prince has brought a lot of kids to build a home studio (a drum machine and a 4-track tape recorder).

It's fair to say that most of the people who criticize here know a thing or two about music, and that they have eclectic music tastes.
So when we bash the guy, it's rightfully so.

Now I can understand why you need so badly to project yourself into Prince, and think that he's some kind of God
who is totally in charge and aware of what he's doing : Prince has become the definitive "what if" musician,

worse than Big Star, Love, or Karen Dalton and such.

I can't think of no one who spilled as much milk as he did.
And sadly he seems keen on following this path until the end.

It's sad because of outside of commercial issues, AOA would have deserve to get to the 2015 audience,

because it is an album of schizophrenia and paranoia disguised as pop songs.

There is some substance to it.

Marz has the same dull, vulgar, artificial taste of the Kraft Foods® chocolate bar.
Looks and tastes like shit.

There is a old American expression that goes: "You don't know shit from shinola"

I had the privildge to go to Montreux Jazz fest 2013 and talk to Prince fans from around the world. It was great to speak with people who were knowlegable about Prince music as well as all genres of music as well. One thing that was clear to me was that because Prince music encompasses many types many types of music everyone has their own favor Prince genre of Music. Europeans Loved the "Gold" Album while it the least favorite of most Americans. American love "Sign of the Times" while most Europeans found it over-rated.

Another thing I realize is that Europeans do not ALWAYS get what the songs are about because things can be lost in translation. A very smart guy I met from Europe who had listen to Prince since the 80's and was a super fan did not know "Tamborine" from Around the World in a Day was about masterbation.

"Marz" is a comentary about the African American situation in America that is very real to me and the lyrics are very timely especially with police brutality and current lack of employment opportunities that many people struggle with on a daily basis.

I thought maybe I'll help you understand

Massive gerneralisation. American's love 'Sign o the Times' while most Europeans find it over-rated? They all prefer 'Gold'? Maybe you talked to a few people who feel that way...

And people understand the lyrics. It's still not a great song.

Thank you.

eclem5, I think we'd all appreciate if you could stick to metaphors.
Your graphical response, what is it for? should I wipe my ass with it?

We may both know as much about Prince's discography, and Montreux is not some kind of Mecca,

attending does not make you a better muslim.

So before you teach me about Shinola, you'd better be graduated in Stooges, New York Dolls, Televison, Patti Smith and so forth

before arguing with me. You're just putting a lot of efforts to defend a song that is average in its execution,
fake in its spirit, poorly composed, and just OK on delivery.

Now you can post all the poop pictures you want, but if we're here to discuss Prince's Music,

let's assume we're amongst educated people, who know their subject.

My picture was a pun, yours is just shit — sorry, "and shinola".
Thank you for educating me to some redneck expressions,
my culture was sure lacking some.

Oh, guess what, I already knew this one!

Since we're culturally exchanging, here's one for you :

Qui aime bien, châtie bien.

But it's European, french to be precise, so I don't know if we can overcome the difference between our civilizations that easily.

yes its a missed opportunity and I think a live album with 3EG would have been a bigger success, at least more appreciated among the fans. The album feels rushed, maybe cuz Prince lost interest as usual

Yes, i think PE contains some nice songs, but the album as a whole just doesn`t work...

He should left out songs like boytrouble, tictactoe and stopthistrain and include more rock songs...

plus maybe more live recorded stuff like she`s always in my hair or something in the water...

All in all, live the 3rdeyegirl stuff works better...

Kind of have to agree. I mean, I like PlectrumElectrum. But it's far removed from Lets Go Crazy reloaded. That was just raw, crunchy and dirty. It's equally different to what they put up on soundcloud, Octopus Heart/Bambi etc.

PlectrumElectrum is more 60's pop/rock. It's not the definitive Prince Rock album. It seems Prince had to fight to get it released. It likely underwent different configurations. I could imagine WB didn't want a straight up rock album from "Prince", and wouldn't back 3EG without something for the pop charts.

I think C&D is by default. But only by default. (since The Undertaker doesn't count wink)

I don't think he has a definitive rock album. If someone said "let me hear Prince rock" - you'd make a compilation rather than point them to an album. Or at least, I would.

The track is okay, hardly worth using as 'promotion'.

It's not about 'production values'. A punky track (well, as punky as Prince gets, which is not very) like this needs a simple, raw video, which is different from a cheap, half-assed one.

Anyway, it's hard to see that shitty video properly through all the tumbleweed.

Just like the rest of the Plectrum album: the song Marz sucks.. so noicy. Awful. sad

Wow and Anotherlove are the only 2 good songs there,

a very bad album, really.

I actually like Marz as a song but it just seems random to release a video since it's not going to be a single or even a chart contender. The video is ugly to look at too. The video is out of sync with the audio too. It just makes no sense.

Just get it together, Prince.

Wow is not a good song. Liv's version is great. Prince's version sounds like a demo version. Anotherlove is good. thats the only song I halfway like on that album and its funny because its a cover. His covers seem to be the best music from him now. Maybe he should follow Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart and just do cover albums now but not the easy listening covers like they do. We may actually get a good album if he were to do it.
