I would say that Sign o' the Times and Thieves in the Temple are two of the greatest 'blues' songs Prince has ever done. They're not structurally 12 bar blues, but the overall feel and lyrics scream (Prince-style) modern blues.

Also, There is Lonely and Empty Room for similar reasons, though none of these sound like 'traditional' blues, but imo have the 'blues impulse'.

90% of the tracks listed here are not blues. You gotta search his live stuff if you want real blues.

Empty Room, Papa, Wow? Wow! Just give him 5 Women and Purple House. If he doesn't like those, well, then he will never be 'converted', and you can save yourself a bunch of time and frustration.

None of the above qualify as Blues.

It's Prince doing his regular mix of styles, but I can't think of anything that sounds like blues on the official records.

Now, if you dig into the live performances (and it's a jungle my friend), you'll have great moments, such as :

- Red House (Le New Morning '87)

- If I Had an Harem (Lovesexy '88)

- The Ride

But Prince is no blues player.
The oldest musical form that had a major influence on Prince is Gospel, not Blues.
And of course, Jazz.

Prince doesn't know the Blues at all, but from an outsider's perspective. He grew up in Minneapolis for God's sake, there probably weren't even 2 bars that booked Blues bands. He was raised on Funk music as is evident throughout his catalogue. He dabbles in the Blues but doesn't really know how to play it in a pure way. It takes more than just listening and copying a record to do it. "5 Women" is barely R&B to me, just a good adult oriented pop song and even "Blues In C" is more of a vamp than real Blues.

I'm withyourfriend on this one. Believe me, no Blues purist will find Prince's renditions intriguing at all, but he does (did) use the vocal stylings from 1999 onwards. Prince should study Buddy Guy but probably doesn't even know who he is...

Agreed, but the question was which songs by Prince would someone who is into the blues may like. I had success with such a person with the selection I created for him.

Love it when he does the blues. All I need is The Ride and Im satisfied

1 - Temptation. I can't believe no one mentioned it... It is the closest thing to a classic Blues chord progression he's ever done.

2 - Kiss, the demo version : before Rivkin and Mazarati turned it into studio wizardry, it was a blues.

I could hear Temptation being better with less guitar and more piano, he was trying to be hard rock with that but the solo is absolute drivel and pathetic, it's like he has limp dick at the end of it, should've done another take, for me that track's all about his vocals and screams. Maybe as a boogie groove, what do you think?
