Is this from a Prince outtake?

This guy created a Prince like track, but the synth part sounds so familar. I'm thinking it is from an outtake maybe Billy's Sunglasses.

Thought so. The synth line was supposedly from Roger Linn and the guy created a Prince like track based around it.

The distorted sound in the beginning?

If that's what you mean then it's exactly what the video state it is - it's a looped sample of Roger Linn demoing a new product of his in that video. Nothing to do with Prince. Of course, the rest of the track is as Prince influenced as it gets.

Huh, I went to the guy's site and it seems like he manufactures software creations of gear that's Prince used a whole lot. How come we've never discussed him before? He's obviously intending to sell these products to people who are into Prince's stuff.

There's an LM-1 plugin that he claims does more than just uses the samples from the machine, an OB-X plugin that sounds quite promising on its own right and even a whammy pedal plugin (the Whammy is a big part of Prince's guitar sound). The demos all sound good and all he's asking for them is 15€ a pop(!). Sure, there are entirely free alternatives for all of them, but I have to say I'm interested. I've seldom heard music done with VSTs that sound so close to Prince's stuff as what I can hear on those demos.

The Guitar riff is from Batdance.

Interestly that video is from the guy who built a softtware clone of the LM-1 drum machine. And the software is brilliant! He's so rad. He's obviosly a big Prince fan.

Check out some of his stuff that's intended as demos for the OB-X plugin he sells:

https://soundcloud.com/al...erheim-obx

For example, "Test3" has him nailing the "Head" solo sound (at 0:30+).

And the ones for the LM-1 plugin:

https://soundcloud.com/al...-drums-emu

Anything with the word "funk" in the title is worth checking out.

I'd say that if you get the LM-1 and the OB-X plugs for 30€ in total it'll give you the tools to do "1999" era sounding stuff rather faithfully (and I'm usually not impressed with VSTs). You just need to add talent. wink

Yeah, this guy is the best at replicating the MPLS funk. Most guys who do it are more into production, but its clear he's a musician as well. Not only has he mastered Prince guitar and bass playing, but also on test 11 he's got his vocals. He's got enough funky material to bridge off his own path and create something new.

What's crazy is not just that he's capable of doing vintage Prince grooves like that, but he's even created the fucking instruments himself and pretty much nailed the sound of those old vintage units whereas so very few have managed to do the same. razz

I think I'm going to get the OB-X emulation at least, but I'm on Linux and I'm not sure how well it will run with the Windows emulation layers. It's just 15 euros though.

I contacted Aly and informed him about this thread.

Aly seemed delighted that we like his demos, but emphasized that they are just quick and dirty product demos.

He says that if he's going to record a full-length album it might be something a bit different, like prog rock mixed with Minneapolis style funk.

He's not an orger and doesn't have an account here. These are the two tracks that he linked at the end of his response to me, so I'll post them here:

Cool. Thanks. Yeah, I've been playing his stuff over and over. He doesn't just copy the MPLS sound, he expands on it. It's also good to hear he has his own sound and are doing these recreations for the demos, but they are still great tracks. If he comes out with an album I'll be the first to buy. I'm surprised he is not an orger. You would think someone who is so familar with Prince's sound would have come across this site.

I bought his VLinn VST plug in and used it a bit on my new album. I gotta say that its way better than most of the other Linn VST's out there. Even Roger has commented on his version and how authentic it is.

Really? Where did you see that Roger said something?
