Rolling Stone: Art Official Age one of 2014 best albums

Nice to see that AOA gets again some praise...

Maybe not a million seller, but again...a great album which got very good reviews this year...

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/50-best-albums-of-2014-20141201/prince-art-official-age-20141201

"Prince proved himself as brilliant and confounding as ever in 2014, releasing this fantastic old-school funk record in tandem with a weird, flat album recorded with his new group, 3rdEyeGirl. Art Official Age recalls the plush swagger and pop mastery of his Eighties classics – all psychedelic pimp style and spectacular balladry."

True... I don't feel like most of that album is "old school funk"

The Gold Standard is old school funk? Or not?smile

It`s a great R&B record...not only old school, true...

But it mixes new sounds with Prince`s trademark sounds and style...

It definitly sounds old fashioned and the production is really really bad. I would love to see him working with a good producer sometime soon.

The standout track, and one I look forward to listening live is Way Back Home.

If that's one of the best, I better don't buy any other album from 2014.

I don't agree with much of their list, some of the stuff they have in the top 20 isn't all that great to my ears, but I definitely agree that AOA was one of the years's best.

Change it one more time..

For me the only signs of Prince moving past his rote repetive tracings of the past are U Know and Way Back Home. Those two tracks point to a Prince that has something more to say. I do like those two tracks and the returning coda of Way Back Home to close the album with Affrimation III

I would imagine there is an epic live version of Way Back Home waiting to open a concert some day soon.

So one of the world's leading music magazines praises Prince's latest record, and what do people do on the "fansite" prince.org? They disagree...

Its a good album. I can hear the 80's retro vibe woven into the album. Clouds has some funk in there, Gold Standard is 80's funk on todays equipment. This Could Be Us is pure 80s balladry. Way Back Home has those airy synths remanicent of some of the 80s best electric. At the end of Time those oldschool synth/horns punch you right in the jaw - he knows.

Of course it's one of the best albums of the year. But there are rarely more than 10/15 decent albums released in any year. So it'd be hard not to include it. I still think PlectrumElectrum is better though.

Oh another one very good review. Strange.
Then we have 2 options: 1) maybe AOA it's really a great album or 2) rollingstone too, like a lot of us, is a bunch of deaf idiots.
I think the first one is the most plausible option.

Prince is like the goose that laid the golden egg, and AOA is like his shiniest piece of dung. Some of y'all want that damn goose to lay a golden egg so much, that you convince yourselves that his shiny DUNG, is in fact another golden egg, lol. biggrin Seriously, when I was a kid I remember the older acts releasing dodgey new material but at the end of the year winning all the trophies and garnering all the accolades. Prince hs been at that stage in his career since at least 2004, right?

They also had U2's last offering as the the best album of 2014
So they are clearly bonkers and listening to music with pies in their ears

It would make more sense if "I really don't like like the production," is what was read instead of what is there. It may not be a style they appreciate, but hat doesn't it inherently bad.
