Prince is present into legal streaming services, but nobody listen to his music. The strongness of Prince sales-wise was his fanbase that usually give him strong sales the first week, making each time a "coup" commercial. This era is now over for him.

He would need a hit to be streamed massively, and that won't never happen again.

How can you possibly know what people are listening to on these services?

Even Billboard magazine in their article said the chart of last week would have been very different even in the top of the charts with the new policy.

People listen mainly what is heard on radio/tv, and Prince had no hit since 2006, and no music video since 2009. So I wonder in what way could that new policy benefit to Prince.

I agree with you.

Now that they start to count official streaming such as Spotify, Google Play etc...Prince's subscribers and streams are very low compared to most. One of thereasons is because he's fought so hard to keep himself off the internet, he realized it's a losing battle, he just became irellevant because of it, and now he is slowly trying to make a return but it's already too late. Too many people of the younger generation don't know him.

The first thing anyone does to look up an artist is they go to YoutTube. You search Prince you get nothing.

He really hurt himself doing all this stuff pulling everything from the internet. He looks outdated with social media now, instagram, facebook, twitter... His following is very low for a "music legend superstar celebrity." It is the Art Official Age indeed, and with the announcement of the industry including streams for sales... It's a real bad sign for Prince, because he is having a very slow time catching up to this social media age.

5 million streams for When Doves Cry on Spotify, Michael Jackson has 64 million streams and he isn't even alive anymore.

Again - How can you possibly claim to know what people are actually listening to? Don't you think one of the reasons streaming has been embraced so quickly is because it allows access to music that isn't shoved down people's throats on the radio?

You really need to drop this omniscient doomsayer act, dude. You aren't as smart as you think are.

What is PPV ? If you knew who I am too !

I know who you are...somebody telling nonsense all the time on many boards...

Sorry to be rough, but this is just so laughable:)

This is a fan community and what is the point in telling us he will never have a record on the billboard 200? Or telling us nobody listens to his music on the streaming platforms? Are you blind?

- He just had worldwide TWO top ten albums...yes, only for a week, but still....

- His songs on spotify for example: Purple rain 18 million views, Kiss 12 million, when doves cry 8 M, fallinlove2nite 3.6 m, some new songs like funknroll 1.2 million, U Know nearly one million...

Yes, not in the legue of todays biggest artists with 70-140 million views, but still.....

P is making music since 1978 and is 56..so he has what other artists aspire to have: longevity!

Selling out arenas worldwide and playing where he wants...releasing music when he wants...this is what other artists can dream of...

Next week chart positions in the US cannot prove the effect of the new rules...AOA is likely to drop anyway...

And to have a single hit record and people streaming just this song will not count as an album sale at billboards new album chart...

Because all the streaming sites show how many number of times a song has been streamed, and from now on every 1500 plays will equal 1 sale.

If a single gets 1500 plays it's one sale for the single. If someone streams the whole album, 1500 times, it is considered 1 sale as well.

His point is Prince is so behind this new age that his numbers are very low because he's done everything to keep his stuff off the internet. Even not well known newer artists have more streams than a song like When Doves Cry.. It's sad and that's the truth.

How can the youth buy a new Purple Rain re issue, when they here about the movie and search on YouTube and find nothing? Same thing when it comes to streaming...

This is not an end of Prince's career.. However if he doesn't keep up properly and let his music on youtube and streaming sites... He will not reach the financial numbers he excpects anymore from any new work, unless he goes independent and sells everything through NPGMC again which I doubt.

prince was an avant-gardiste in the beginning of the internet era, now I can't see a way for Prince to be relevant in this day and age.

Not only major record won't release his albums anymore, but he hasn't made the move to put his videos on youtube. He and WB should have done that during the release of AOA. But who cares ? Prince got what he wanted : he can't even find 100.000 people to buy one of his new album.

i don't answer to personnal attack. See with moderators.

With the new policy, he wouldn' t have 2 top 10 albums, that's the thing.

I don't think you understood what the changes implies on the BB 200. To quote some articles " 10 individual song downloads will also count for an album sale" and "

The move to include streaming services in Billboard’s ranking is a boon for younger artists, whose listeners are used to going online to for their music. "

If the Billboard made this change, it's because the charts would be different. They explained it themselves.

Yes, Prince sells a lot of ticket tour. In my opinion, it would be more relevant to count albums sold with tickets, just like Musicology. But that's a topic about the Billboard 200, so i don't see your point here ?

So what, you think this policy will profit to someone like Prince ? Why changing the rules if that doesn't change anything lol ? The billboard magazine themselves said it would impact massively the charts. Check the facts. Check this week the new Billboard.

I got to say that this is some of the most side-eye worthy shit I've read on this board in a minute....U wanna blame Prince's adverse (and puzzling) issue with the new social media/streaming technology? I can dig that. Prince is his own worst enemy when it comes to that...HE is the reason fans have issues finding certain songs on YouTube ect....

But....

All the other shit you have been spouting about? Laughable....A 56 year old artist selling nearly 200,000 copies of an album worldwide, in a climate in which Taylor Swift was the ONLY artist to have a platinum album in 2014, says a lot...Prince will have no trouble getting another record deal if he so chooses. Hell, he can sell his albums out of Paisley Park if he wanted to. That part of the game matters little...He's all about controlling his music and touring...

Your beef with Prince is that he doesn't want to play the NEW game....And I agree somewhat....But all that becomes moot when he is still selling out shows. We all know that in today's flat music business artists are turning to other revenue models OTHER than record sales and streaming services (of which everyone from Thom Yorke to Taylor Swift have given the middle finger to). But music acts TODAY are no longer tied to "record sales"....It's reality show, frangrance/clothing line, touring or bust....Prince only cares about selling out dates....I don't think he cares how many times he's being streamed on Spotify....

Prince is a lot of things. He is a frustrating artist, sure....But chill with this doomsday bullshit...It ain't THAT serious....lol

AOA is not even in the top 100 of the best selling albums of 2014 in the USA. And to reach that top 100, you had to sell only 150 k albums. AOA doesn't reach the 100 k mark. And december month is the best selling month of the year.

PINK FLOYD just went to sell in one week three times that AOA and PE sold in two months.

Taylor Swift is not the only one who sold one million disc that year. Taylor Swift and others who are not "platinum" sell millions of digital singles, which is not what Prince 's doing.

During the first six months of 2014, HPrince never suceedeed in selling PLECTRUM ELECTRUM to a major record. Nobody cared. WB only agreed because they had an interest (that seems to be long gone now) with the reeditions of the catalogue.

I understand everything, sir. What u r clumsily saying is Prince will no longer have a Billboard 200 album because of the inclusion of streaming services in the measuring of sales...And I'm saying that it's waaaaaaay too soon to be blowing that horn specifically with veteran artists like Prince.....

Personally, I think the only Billboard change that has truly had a HUGE impact was the way they destroyed the Hip-Hop and R&B charts....But that's another topic....

[Edited 11/24/14 8:35am]

I'm factoring in worldwide sales here, kiddo....And I'm also factoring in the point that Prince is Prince...Meaning that the dude drops TWO ALBUMS on the same day, which eats up his own sales; He then decides to not drop a video when the albums have momentum; he then decides not to tour during the same month the albums r released....And then he only makes one appearance on TV to promote said album projects....

I think it's going over your head. It's not that "nobody cared" (that's the bullshit that I'm pointing to...lol)...It's the fact that we are dealing with an artist, for better or worst, that does shit when HE wants to do it...

I have criticized Prince's various stumbles when it comes to releasing music...But I've never made the mistake of thinking that Prince's issue is that no one wants to support his music. Prince's issue is that he doesn't want to play the game.....

And in the big scheme of thing is that really an issue to him or to some of the fans who want to see their hero no. 1 on the Billboard charts again?

Wolrdwide are worst comparing to his US sales. I'm well aware of Prince not wanting to play the game, and that it caused the two albums to flop on charts. I predicted that three months ago : there was still no music video, etc. when the common tought here was to think it wasa huge commercial idea to drop AOA and PE before the PR reedition (which is absolutely nonsense, and i was right).

The thing is that :

1. records retailers knows that Prince has a history of not promoting his albums. The first few weeks are strong, but retailers are then stuck with many unsold albums

2. Major records knows too well that Prince doesn't care about promotion. He had so many deal this year (Epic, Kobalt, WB) and he never cared about.

Of course Prince could be a huge seller if he wanted to. He attracts very good ratings with each one of his appearance ( cf NEW GIRL, cf he doubled the ratings of the Arsenio Hall, he made the biggest audience of the SNL this year) but it has most of the time nothing to sell.

I'm not criticizing Prince for that, in fact I'm glad that such a personnality still exists.

But I can't see how prince could crack the BB 200. Fisrt he would have to find another major record...no way. Not that it's the biggest problem in the world. It's just another topic on prince.org.

There is even one about Prince with iris turning to white, with some satanic backward messages shits.

I can't understand all your attacks, and I can't see the point.

Again..u r being an alarmist here....I get where u r coming from....It's just that where you are taking your views is jumping the gun....

I can tell you just from being around the record business for the last 20 years the doomsday scenario that you are presenting is over the top....

If you want to make statements about how Prince is shooting himself in the foot, by all means go for it....No beef there.

But let's try to stay away from playing fortune teller......

No way lol ...I'm too good a winner about telling fortune.

Especially when it's only 4 days from now. it's not like I predicted something that would be happening in four hundred years.eek

i hope one day they will count albums sold in concerts. I don't think Prine wants to go indie.

1. Let's see what the new policy changes really mean. From talking to some of my Billboard folks it won't be as dramatic as the way they shifted policy on the singles charts.

2. Prince won't care one bit either way considering this a dude that once released an album in a newspaper....

3. I think it's important to understand that album sales r no longer the barometer for success for an artist. Again, Taylor Swift so far is the only artist to go platinum THIS YEAR....In terms of Prince who in a very Princely fashion released two albums on the same day, which ate up sales on both ends, it is important to note that his overall first week sales of AOA were 159, 003 (including the 108,000 sold globally beyond the States...)...Again, this is a question of Prince not wanting to play the game, which you so rightly agreed with and stated....But let's not act like a 56 year old artist being close to 200,000 K worldwide without video and singles presence is a flop....Now PE? That was a flop.....

3. Turn it down a bit...lol....If things go down like you r predicting you will have ample time to have your victory lap at the Org....

AOA sold 159.000 copies worlwide the first week ? Where in the galaxy ?

It sold only 50 k + in the USA, 10 k in Japan and Uk, and 6 k in France. No way it could sell 75k copies in the rest of the world. That's fantasy.

Don't trust this numbers : AOA only sold a little 100 k the first week.

Again, you misunderstood this topic : it's about BB 200. I never said BB 200 was the biggest issue in the world. I completely understand that you don't care about it. It's not like the world is gonna end up turning, I agree.

If AOA is out of BB 200, you call it that a victory for me ? AOA is not the worst thing on BB 200, I would prefer it stays on charts. I think I will always support Prince, no matter what he does...except if he molests children or some shits like that, of course.

Who looks at charts anymore anyway? I only recently saw one because I subscribed to Rolling Stone for my niece's fundraising magazine thing and NOTHING I like is on any top 10 anywhere as far as I know. Who really cares about this shit and why? Prince makes his money touring, like just about every other modern musician who's not hyped by some shitty reality show or some crap.

Because if these albums doesn't sell, there will be no following? AOA and PE are on sale on amazon.com (7 dollars), the promotion is officially over for WB. AOA reentered the top 200 of amazon (#97, #1 rnb soul) and PE #181

Yes there will. If he could ever learn to set up a proper website and give what's left of his real fans what they've been clamoring for, he could solve this "problem" such as it is. NPGMC came close but Prince seems to think that he's entitled to sell records simply because he deigned to share his artistry with us lowlifes nd he wouldn't allow an honest and open message board and fan community that could share open ideas that didn't conform to Prince's religous sensibilities and quirky ideas about censorship and control.

.

Again, musicians these days don't make the bulk of their money on album sales. They do it by touring, pairing up with an advertiser or, like I said, by running a decent peer to peer fan website that delivers what fans want and listens to feedback. Prince is above all of that, apparently, and deserves to be paid for taking a shit on the carpet and for sliding a symbol logo attached to a toothpick into that purple turd.

.

He could set up a website that would allow us to buy soundboard quality live shows, aftershows, outtakes, vault tracks, remixes, the Musicology movie but his narcissism and lack of folow through always fuck him (and us) in the end.

.

There will always be new albums.

Oh yeah, in a physical form? And how in hell could he do that ? He didn't released anything for more than for years, and 5 years and a half in the USA.

You must be a new fan because Prince found a manner to put out music for a good while without a major company at all and then working with record compnaies. Do you think he has been sitting around for 4 years not recording music?

I also looked on Billboard yesterday and AOA was at number 13 on the RnB chart so Prince still has a presence on the charts without any radio airplay or promotion from the WB. He is not going anywhere anytime soon unless he decideds to do so.
