i originally thought it was a straight cover of a rock song - but now i've heard the original i appreciate Prince's arrangement a lot more - he kept the lyrics (with some Princley changes), but took it to that other level.

It happens to be my favorite Alice Smith song!
I don't know how anyone can think it's boring... Why? Because it's just mainly piano and Alice?

What Prince did to it made it boring, IMO, by slowing it down and taking the passion out of it.

What level did he take it to?
The song was fine.

Prince fans are funny. They act like he invented music. lol

I was at a listening party when Emancipation came out, and the people there had never heard the Stylistics' "Betcha By Golly Wow". I had to go out to my car and get it for them...
Just because Prince redoes something, it's not automatically better. Sometimes it's just different-- and dare I say: Not good. ohgoon

I find it interesting how Prince covers some songs, but I'd love to see how it works when he gets a request by someone to cover his music? I cant imagine he makes it easy given the fact NPG had a 15 second video os someone/a fan singing When doves cry in his car removed from Instagram a few weeks back.

prince pays homage to so many others, rockers, funksters, it's nice to see him giving it up for a soul sister chanteuse. it (and your post) made me buy her song, so i guess it's a win win!

Lyrics are great but his music and delivery make the song rock. If you don't like it you are probaly not much of a fan. This Prince at his best.

"Anotherlove" is Prince's best song in
Years.I know it's basically a cover song
But he put his own unique spin on it.
Those extra cooltwo verses plus roaring

Fact?

Fact 1: You don't know me or my level of fandom. You cannot base that on like/dislike of one song.

Fact 2: I have watched you be argumentative and rude about stuff over the years. You're still blocked on orgnotes for an obnoxious note you sent me years ago.

Fact 3: You need not answer further because I'm done with you... I like what I like. Or not. Deal with it.

It's easily my favorite released cover in Prince's career (not better than the unreleased glory of "Just My Imagination"). It hints at the ability to perfectly fuse R&B greatness into rock urgency.

It's just ok for me. I much prefer Alice Smith's original. It has more depth, is more nuanced, especially emotionally. It has more soul. I love Prince, but covers like this and 'One of Us' I find incredibly underwhelming. Just rock it up a bit and tack a guitar solo on it. Give me the original any day of the week. It's way deeper.

She's dedicated to what she does, and she does it well, but if I were to be harsh, she's just another xeroxed Macy Gray/Amy Winhouse.
The old same Motown/Capitol "wannabe Aretha" rehash.

It's the most "heart on his sleeve" vocal performance of the year, along with Way Back Home.

Really love Prince's version of this song but I hadn't heard the original. Listened to the original and didn't like it. I find the vocal unpleasant, the piano seems weird and there is an odd feel about the flow of the whole thing. I Liked the Prince version even more after hearing the original.

If I'd heard the original first and found Prince was going to cover it I'd have wondered why.

Alice's original is fine. Prince just gave us a slowed-down, soul version of it, kind of putting his r&b touch to the song, which he is very good at, and thank goodness, he didn't give up on his r&b/soul touch, while riding the rocking horse side of his music style, at this time in his career.

'Another Love' is the best track on the Plectrumelectrum cd. His performance on SNL of that track, and the reaction and reviews from many who watched it, speaks for itself. Amazing that the only r&b with mixture of Prince's rock style, seems to be one of the faves by many on the Plectrumelectrum cd.

I love both versions of the song. Look up some of Alice's live versions of this song. There is one video of her singing in a cafe. Shes got an amazing voice, especially live. There's nothing boring about either of them singing this one.

I would have never heard of Alice Smith had Prince not covered her. I'm listening to her music and I'm loving it. Yet another reason Prince is a true artist, he leads his listeners to different artists to explore.

Isn't it kind of stupid to compare one version to the other? I think they are both great for different reasons. Alice's version is unique, as it is sung by her, the way she wants to sing it and what she wants it to elicit as far as meaning/feeling, what have you. Prince's version is the same. I in no way compare it to Alice's as it's simply different. They instrumentation, the arrangement, it's all very different, so how can you compare the two?

Prince's, maybe, but overall, no. Sorry, I find his version predictable, like he phoned it in. I much prefer the original. I hear more soul and nuance in Alice Smith's. Prince's comes over as self-parody at this point. He's done heart on his sleeve brilliantly a number of times down the years, but this doesn't do it for me.

Yes, just imagine the piles of money Princey lost when some ne'er-do-well uploaded a 15 second Instagram of him singling When Doves Cry. Can't have such insubordination, right? What's next, men marrying horses?
