WHAT IT FEELS LIKE - AOA's 'Ballad of dorothy parker moment'

Im not sure if this track is slightly under the radar, but the groove, lyric and melody keep me coming back for repeated listens....it reminds me of the feeling i get from listening to 'ballad...' in some ways.

A real grower.

To me, it's a lot like Come On but different.

It's a nice groove, and it attempts to povide depth to a romantic theme, but it lacks the musical depth, narrative, and poetic imagery of "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker".

Your right, 'Ballad..'' is a stone cold classic, I agree it lacks the imagery, but its chord progressions, rythm track and understated delivery of the vocals just bring me to feel that there are some similarities there.

But more to the original point, like TBODP, its a song with a lot of subtleties and the melodies take a bit of time to creep in to your head.....i think in relative terms its a bit of a gem.

This song is the epitome of why Prince needs help with his songwriting. I swear this sounds like it was left off the 1-800-NEW-FUNK album. Or a NPS outtake. I'd feel much better knowing this was actually a spruced up outtake from back in the day and not something he came up with fairly recently. The lyrics make no sense and the track itself sounds very half-assed.

Funksterr, its funny because thats exactly what the NME said about The ballad of dorothy parker when they reviewed it back in 87......that song took along time to creep up on people

It did and I do get why you made the comparison. But What It Feels Like is so generic and the flirtatious, sort of Bible-based lyrics are impossibly lame. "Silly rabbit needs to stop doing tricks/ If you wanna get my ca-a-ll". ill Reminds me of bad Lucy Pearl. And then it sounds so much like Time that they are barely distinguishable from each other. It's not awful, but there isn't enough there that it's going to rise to a new level of appreciation like TDODP.

I know, your right...lyrically ballad was his peak...its gorgeous, its whimsical, its dr zeus with a linn.

But my point is 'what it feels like' is a track people are going to respond much more too as time passes on this album .....just like they did with TBODP.

I think that is true for pretty much every Prince song and album. It often takes time to marinate.

I think the OP implicitly acknowledges that in labeling WIFL a "TBODP Moment" . . . and I agree with you.

Seriously forgot this song even existed. Meanwhile, BODP is so damngood, I dreamt about it even before SOTT was released. It literally called to me from the future.

Well said. Doesnt have the musicality worthy to be compared to Dorothy Parker IMO. To me, its actually the least listened to track on AOA due to that reason.
