Prince's Funkiest Album?

I love many of his Purple Majesty's albums, and find myself often in awe of his musical genius.

Today a new question came to mind; of all the wonderful work he's done, which Album is the "FUNKIEST" of them all???

My choice would be...

"1999"

due to the title track, DMSR, Automatic, & Lady Cab Driver.

#FONK personified.

whats your take?

The Black Album, or ONA: It Ain't Over if we're counting live as well

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...

Exodus or New Power Soul. They're not funky in the way most people want them to be though

I think Come is up there as one of the funkiest (atleast the whole first side) ... it's terribly under-rated but holds up so well....

Come is the only album from the 90s I love equally to 80-88.

it's old school.

Space is glorious,so is the title track and letitgo.

where the gold experience was plastic,Come was real.

Come Prince's funkiest album?
Never.
Maybe most underrated album.
For me, Come grows with every year from a mediocre album from first listening
to one of my Top 10 albums.

Most funky album?
The Black album imo, followed by Exodus, the Symbol album and Dirty Mind.

Nothing comes even close to 20Ten, the most underrated and funkiest album of his career. Cold, hard, relentless funk.

Camille is and would've been the funkiest Prince album had it seen a proper release. Blows the The Black Album away!

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by this? I know a lot of people don't like NPS (I do) but Exodus is hard to argue with as a funk album.

.

Come to think of it, Prince hasn't ever really done a full funk album, has he? The Black Album is closest, wall to wall, but it always felt too...I dunno...synthetic or something. There's some thick shit on it for sure (Bob George, RHIAFP, Dead On It, LeGrind) but a few songs get lost in the drum programing (Cindy C., 2 Nigs, SuperFunkaCali) and are missing something on the bottom end, while "When 2 R in Love" doesn't fit on the album at ALL. I like The Black Album but I wish it were more organic sounding. I guess that's why I prefer Exodus. Sounds like a real band is playing it.

.

Someone should start a thread: Prince: The Funk and list 12-15 quintessential Prince funk tracks. It's probably been done bt it'd be fun to see everyone's different choices.

I totally disagree. While Exodus is sn album full of fillers, The Black Album is one solid album with its main focus on one thing, pure funk with nice and well fitting breathing pauses like When 2 R In Love.

Camille would have been Prince's best album overall. That tracklist is just absolutely, utterly killer.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Adorecream

1999, as it is funky and set the template for all later Prince funk. The only track not funk infused is Free, the rest even Something in the water has funk running through it. DMSR is the funkiest song he ever done.

.

SOTT comes close, Housequake, It, Forever in my life, Sign extended, U got the look and Strange Relationship are all funkafied.

.

Later albums, I would say MPLSOUND is the closest he gets to true funk, even for Ol skool company alone, that thing is funkalicious.

.

Most of his albums have at least some funky cuts though. Sexy Dancer is funk, most of DM is funk, same with Controversy. Not so much funk on Purple Rain, but Erotic city extended is really funky (Got some creamy human jive). Black Album and Lovesexy are quite funky too.

How could i omit 1999 ?? the most new wave sounding album he's probably done, and it's still god damn funky. Oh yeah it is Prince we're talking.

Controversy is my pick. Controversy, Sexuality, Private Joy, Let's Work, Jack U Off. Throw in one of his greatest slow sexy song ever, and 2 very quirky tracks to thread the funk together. Yep, Controversy's my pick. The bass line and synths in Let's Work alone are worthy of Funkiest.
