I can't show you that Prince keeps a schedule that would make a tweaker pass out, but we know he does.

You can also find the previously mentioned James Brown show, and the film stills from the lost pre- Purple Rain film. He looks especially hopped up during some of the Purple Rain period. Pretty much any time you've seen Prince where he looks like someone hit the fast forward button on him, or his eyes are bulging out of his head, until his curl looks like it's writing Rick James letters appealing for help...wellllllllll....

Prince has written about drugs in plenty of other songs. Some of them covertly, others more openly. And always in a way that is hard to pin it on him personally. They usually seem to be about other people around him.

Some lyrics are clearly against/versus drugs, like on 'Sign of the Times' ("September my cousin tried reefer for the very first time. Now he is doing horse - it's June") , or 'The Love We Make' - "Put down the needle, put down the spoon".

Others lyrics are more ambiguent, like on 'Old Friends For Sale':

"2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin', oh
Cocaine becomes charmin'
But you talk about things you don't know 'bout
I know, no matter how pleasant your past was
Green and white return 2 blue
U're happy as long as your last buzz

There are several drug references on LoveSexy and the Black Album. "This is not music, this is a trip" and:

But drugs references are also on other albums. Drinking references on 'The Holy River'("Have another glass of port and forget this"). 'My Little Pill' ("All my cares and troubles dive right off my window still. Every time I pop my little pill") Weed on other tunes, like 'Now', or the Exodus album. Perhabs even 'The Gold Standard". Doesn't say he is outright against, nor doing/tolerating it. Classic ambiguous Prince.

Prince has never been a "smoker" tho. That much is for sure. Nor a "pothead". But anybody thinking Prince is not aquainted with drugs and/or alcohol, is fooling themselves. Prince is a "rockstar" people. Under loads of temptations, stress and suffering. What do you expect? It is the music industry and he is in it. There has been "sex, drugs and rock and roll" in his life, perhabs since he picked up the guitar. All kinds of it. People around him are highly likely to use or engage in it. Plenty of stories about that too. Plus certain videos/pictures. Sure, nobody but him can say what he may have used or may still be still using. And so, I am not saying he is a drug user or has been. But, to say he "never" has done any of that stuff, seems the most unlikely thing of all.

Just saying. And if he has in fact been an addict, or is a recovering one now, then more power to him! It would only strengthen my respect for him. God bless his soul.

I tend to believe that is his "ideal" too. But precisely because it is an "ideal", it is not the "reality".

I also tend to believe that once somebody starts to "experiment" with drugs, especially "the hard kind", most cannot come back from that "journey", untill they have overcome their addiction to it. That's not to say one cannot "experiment" with drugs without getting addicted. So, it is possible Prince only experimented with cocaine, and did not get enslaved/addicted to that drug, like some of his friends did. Like Morris Day or Vanity6 are said or have claimed to have. But it is also possible that he indeed did also, yet managed to "control" it. I don't believe Prince is a cocaine addict now, or that he has been one ever, in a problematic sense at least. The lyrics to Old Friends For Sale however, speak of somebody who seems to know what a cocaine addiction means. That could be, simply because of the experience of living with, or being friends or lovers with one. Or just a poet perhabs, that is able to delve into the addictions of others, and make a work of art out of it. Or, who could have "drawn" it out of his self and own experience...



In any case, Prince is still alive. Physically and spiritually. Rocking and funking!

When we incluide coffee, tea and cigarettes, we have all "done drugs".


It's no big deal if Prince did drugs. It's very likely he did, some of it at some point at leats.

The Big Deal is:

That he hasn't died or become sick becasuse of any drugs. Or so it seems.

Whatever drugs he did, Prince won hands down.

Not to mention certain pain killers, that can kill more than just pain.

Or other 'medicine', that makes us feel more happy, than we really are

Or more active and powerful

Or more euphoric and self content

No medicine can prevent a 'coming down', a 'relapse' or a 'depression'.
