Billy Joel knew when to say when... when will Prince learn when to say when

Billy Joel when he had nothing left to say after
1993..He left a mystic and ended
Recording when his music fell off a bit.
when should Prince stop doing new material.
Music? So it won't tarnish his legacy

Do you know how many terrible plays Shakespeare wrote? As such, his legacy is doing just fine. I'm trying to understand if this concept of tarnishing one's legacy is something unique to popular music because in all other genres this is a silly concept. And, to echo KingSausage, I'm still digging Prince. Damn, that's two times today that I've agreed with Sausage...I need to check my blood pressure.

Comparing Billy Joel to Prince is like comparing Dr. Seuss to Shakespeare.

Fuck that, I hope he makes music till the end of his days. Music is all he knows and all he's done since he was 16. Old habits die hard and this muthafunka's a stone cold junkie.

New music can never tarnish his legacy, what a stupid thing to say. Prince has proved himself 10 times over and his place in music history is firmly imbeded. He's a certified legend and his legacy will live on long after he passes.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Billy Joel should have stopped after Glass Houses in 1980, so he went about 13 years too long...

Billy Joel did not quit music. He quit being a pop star. Big difference. Billy Joel walked away because he had become so incredibily main stream - everybody loves him -disney crowd - lite FM - your parents want to go to the concert with you -popular that it made even him sick. Having drunken frat boys sing Piano Man at the local pub and chicks sing Honesty at the bachelorette party wasn't something the guy was proud of. He became a product. So he walked. Prince has never really had that problem. Especially since the name change thing. Prince makes music for his fans. He could give a fukc less what you think.

This. Plus, Billy Joel and Prince are two entirely different animals. Things they have in common? Music and height.

hmmm.... I personally think Prince probably respects Billy Joel a great deal. The musicianship and chameleon like changes of flavor in Joel's albums is great.

And trust me, Prince puts out a lot more Suess... "Green Eggs and Ham".

Unless you meant Prince is Suess, which would make more sense. Suess is considered a genius artist in his way. I wouldn't knock him.

I honestly don't think that Prince cares if he "ruins" his legacy.I doubt that he even thinks about his legacy at all lol He'll keep doing his thing until he dies.To his credit,he seems to be an artist at peace with himself.

Billy Joel and Prince both have LOADS of respect for each other musically. Joel was asked about it in a pre-Super Bowl press conference in 2007 when Prince played and he praised him unequivocally.

Prince, for his part, used to attend Billy Joel concerts (along with others) early in his career, presumably to take notes on how to appeal to a broader audience in concert, even if Joel's music wasn't his particular cup of tea.

Plus he always has respected true singer-songwriter-musicians, especially if they can read music like Joel can. (see George Duke, Herbie Hancock, etc)

I would rather listen to a recording of the water splashing when Prince takes a dump than anything by Billy Joel.

I just listened to PE for the 10th time today. Even my kids like it. Prince is still happening...just not for you (and some others).

So let him continue...the rocking chair is still a long way to go.

I think it would be better for the negative fans to say when and leave. Prince continue to release music and fuck the negative fans here. He doesn't need a label. I wish he would just do itunes or downloads from his page only. If he wants to release it on cd then do a limited pressing and sell it through amazon. Forget the radio and labels.

I get so tired of reading these comparisons and questions about his life. Let him live his life the way he wants. If he decides to walk tomorrow, that's his call but it seems like some of you so-called fans want to dress him in Depends already and call it a day. If you think the new music is ruining him, don't fucking listen to it. This is not a difficult decision.
