PEACH & BLACK PODCAST : Plectrumelectrum Review

..

Well, here we are folks, the first of two albums released after a 4 year drought from Prince with the help of his most recent band 3rd Eye Girl. Let's review Plectrumelectrum.

..

Listen - HERE - http://peachandblack.podb...um-review/

..

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

I have to say a good show, pretty much spot on with the reviews. I will not say where each song ranks on the survey, but they rank them all and there are no real surprises.

.

Ironically the best song on the album which they acknowledge as the best, I did not think was so great back in the survey, is a real grower and the one track we all suspect would do poor, did poor.

.

I am not revealing any details as I want you all to listen to it. I agree too that there is a bit of filler and some bad filler on here that drags it down and these songs could have been moved in place of superior cuts like Screwdriver, Live out Loud and Fall in Love tonite.

.

But the highlights are high, now go and listen to it already and give our buddies across the ditch all the purple love you can. (Us Kiwis refer to Aussies as being across the ditch - namely the Tasman Sea).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Great listen!

I have to agree on the praise for Tic Tac Toe, such a fine track. I'm surprised it got so low on the fan favourite list.

Thanks for a great episode gents! I always glean new insight to tracks that I may have slept on - in this case Tictactoe. I also really enjoyed the fan voting aspect and just competed the survey for AOA.

And Captain, your rant on the 11% loving everything was pure genius. So funny and spot on.

Can't wait for the AOA episode.
Can I kiss you there, down there where it counts?

I think AOA is a better, more cohesive set but PE interests me more to go back and listen to. I feel had 2 or 3 songs been switched out for others it would've been really great rather than just patchy with killer songs and blah ones.

Also I agreed with almost everything you guys said in this review, it was a good listen (actually it's a good listen even when I don't agree with you all! razz )

.

If I was asked what I'd prefer or indeed want - RnB Prince or Rock Prince - it would be Rock Prince everytime. But, I really do prefer AOA, which has me pretty perplexed, seeing as PE is a good solid rock album (certainly his 'rockiest') and as NouveauDance says, if 2 songs were switched, could've been really great.

.

Cheers gents, another excellent podcast.

.

Couple of things...

.

Thr production is very solid - although I'd have liked it to have sounded a little more raw and raggedy. I suppose I just wanted it to sound when he played in London at the start of the year - grungy-garagey-rocky & loud - but I understand that'd be impossible to recreate, I mean, what do I know? (I can still taste the sweat & dry ice now!).

.

Don't really feel the track "Plectrum Electrum" as much as you guys saying it's one of his best instrumentals. It's OK, but nowhere near the heights of "Alexa de Paris", the instrumental part of "Mountains", "Venus de Milo" or "God". (Gotta be said, imagine being Donna composing this tune, then Prince comes into her life out of nowhere, asks to be part of the band, then go touring and then put an album out?! Mad. Fair play to her.)

Re: "Whitecaps". Simple song, but really strikes a musical chord with me. Love it when Prince noodles around on his guitar with those reverbed tones (0.56 - 1.21) - could listen to him play like this all day. Gorgeous. Shame, MC has such a stick up his arse re: Hannah's vocals. I think her vocal is fine and does the song justice. To me, Hannah's got that look of wide-eyed innocence about her which lends itself to this song. For Prince to stick with the girls vocally is to be applauded - he gives them a stage and wants listeners to know that this an album by a band.

.

Finally, Captain's bang-on with his description of "FunknRoll"....it's GOOFY! Top analysis man. For me it's "3121"'s goofy, party-animal cousin.

Which leads to the question, when can we expect a review of the much better album Art Official Age. I like how you guys have got the "Lesser" album out of the way.

.

Yes the quality control on Plectrum electrum is lacking, and it has come down since my initial Euphoria weeks ago. The girl voices are weak, Boytrouble is easily one of his very worst songs ever, and it would be greatly improved with its removal and replacement with a higher quality song.

.

You should have mentioned Prince's tendency to introduce talking in songs, especially when its in a foreign language. Prince has been using Spanish voices chattering sicne Joint to Joint and Man in yo life. That may be fine in the states where many of you guys understand it. But here in New Zealand, the British world, we do not understand it and have no legacy with Spanish. If we have any foreign languages it is likley to be Japanese, French or a native language like Maori.

.

Boytrouble is bad enough, but the jabbering in Spanish makes its worse. What are they saying?

Are you sure it's Spanish, I was under the impression that it was just meaningless gibberish, but if that's not the case I guess that makes me a massive racist sad

Yeah, you're right, I think I actually said the same kind of thing in a previous post, so I don't know why I described it as "meaningless gibberish" here. Anyways, the main thing to take away from this is that it's not Spanish, that's for certain smile

Oh, and before I forgot, great podcast as usual guys. You seemed a lot more generous in your appraisal than the rather downbeat tone of last month's episode suggested, which was good to hear, given that these forums can occasionally be a hotbed of negativity. I have quite mixed feelings about the album but it does have some absolutely killer tracks and it's cool that you acknowledged that.

Just realized while listening to some old tracks -

The first few lines of Marz are straight from 'Midnight Blues'..
