The artist formerly known as Prince has never been far from controversy. He was one of the biggest selling pop stars of his day, making his name - then changing it to a squiggle - with his high-energy fusion of rock and funk, before disappearing into rock star seclusion.

Now he faces notoriety of a different sort after a former girlfriend made a series of allegations claiming he sexually abused her and made her call him the Messiah.

Charlene Friend alleges that the diminutive singer filmed her having sex with him without her permission and threatened violence when their relationship ended.

In court papers filed in Santa Monica, California, Miss Friend, who was 18 when she met the star, says she was repeatedly physically and mentally abused during their two-year relationship and that the experience left her suffering from depression.

In her statement she says: "Prince informed me he took sexual relations very seriously.

"He believed he was the Messiah and if you had sex with him, you became one with him.

"He would have me dress in his clothing at his whim. His staff were not allowed to look at me and I was not allowed to look at them."

This is a very old story.

The clue to this is in the line:

"The case was filed after a row broke out over some gifts Prince, 44, gave to Miss Friend, now 30, which she attempted to sell."

The case was settled in Prince's favour in 2003.

I remember this story. It came out during one of Prince's attempts to control the Internet. She tried to sell a jacket he had given to her on Ebay, and he blocked it. She got pissed and sued. I don't think she's crazy or that she was lying. It's a fairly similar experience of all the Prince girlfriends: They visit Prince in the studio, they start out as friends, Prince takes liberties, he mentors their careers, gets them an apartment, they dress up like him, they get engaged, Prince cheats on them, yada yada yada. I believe it was determined that Prince did not film her sexually. She just assumed he did after he showed her videos of other women having sex with him .

By rock and roll standards, it's pretty tame behavior for it's time, if you ask me.

It's not a stretch to believe most of whats said. However the "wild sex parties" - really? And nobody who's attended any of these has ever gone to a tabloid? I'm not sure that rings true.

Right. It sounds exaggerated for the tabloids (Daily Mail is one of THE most grim, insidious newspapers in the UK), but it doesn't sound particularly out of character if you pare it back to basics of the story. I mean starving her? More like he suggested that if she wanted to be a star she should have the salad instead of the pasta when they went out for dinner.

Right. A bunch of stuff that came from her ended up in a "Rock Legends" auction by "Julien's Auctions" in 2011. (I'm looking at the catalog now--March 26, 2011 is date on the catalog...and I know people who won some of the auction items--I don't know if Prince tried to block this, but the auction definitely went thru. I'm sure someone who has more time than i do right now will find and include a link/pictures.)

I think I remember this. There were suddenly loads of his clothes being "auctioned soon". But the story I heard was that he'd moved house and he'd apparently forgot about all these items (there were a lot if I remember?). I think the fansites got told they weren't allowed to talk about it too?

Does anyone know how much the stuff went for? Just out of curiosity.

^^Hey look, we all age and are aging, and we all will start to show it after a while, including you. The years catch up with us all sooner or later....even your idol Prince is starting to show his age, even though it did take a while.

Maybe Prince's true fetish is very ordinary, plump, plain women and the caramel transsexual barbie doll look we associate him with is just for show for the media

How can you all judge the woman and talk about her looks that way, just because she said something about Prince? How do any of us know if what she said wasn't true? What if Prince did do these things to her? Everyone knows that mostly everyone that was associated with Prince personally, considers him a jerk, and has spoken many times about how awful he can be as a person. Sure, they speak well of him as an entertainer, but as a person, they don't. So don't speak badly about the woman that way, we all have aged and will age, no one looks stays the same, not even Prince!

She has a dark exotic look. But she kinda looks like Elvira now, with no make up...

The common denominator with Prince seems to be hot cold behaviour and control mindgames.
