It's hard to believe it's the same guy. So much fire and drive in him back then. A young man with something to prove on the very brink of super-stardom. Don't even mention the actual MUSIC. Just pure, filthy genius.

You really can see the passion in his eyes. I wasn't alive back then but I get goosebumps thinking about it. Knowing what he went on to achieve. I. fucking. love. Prince. He pisses me off as much as the next guy and sure I moan about it all the time. But, despite that, Prince, you really are my hero and I adore your music.

I was 11 and I remember walking to Shake It Well Records with my older female cousin and two of her friends. When they asked what I wanted and I handed them the Lp, they looked at me all surprised that I even knew who Prince was. But they brought it for me and when we got home and I opened it, the heifers straight jacked me for my damn poster! lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Let me start by saying "thank God for big brothers" lol My eldest brother introduced me to Prince with the Dirty Mind album. (blew my mind....completely). He then went on to get Controversy and 1999! cool I would wait for him to leave and then I had his room and his music to myself! lol Good memories! He knew good music! He introduced me to Slave also via the Stone Jam album!

My first Prince purchase was Purple Rain.....never in a million years did I think the love affair would last this long........

I can remember having the poster on my wall. As a straight teenage boy, I took a considerable amount of heat from friends and family. It never phased me. I was a nonconformist maverick and Prince was my first hero for that reason. Annie Christian terrified my mother. We had to play Do Me Baby in my room with the red light bulb and the door closed (my girlfriend's name was Nikki - believe it or not). The entire Lord's Prayer in Controversy was the most radical new wave punk rock thing we had ever heard in our lives - NO ONE was doing anything like this. Lets Work was the foundation of every house party. We watched BET for hours to see the Sexuality video - and I bet we only saw it 3 times.

And I NEVER took off my Rude Boy lapel pin or the relaxer in my hair.

I had the first three labums but I think this was my coming of age record. I fell in love with Prince completely. THis album - with 1999 - was the soundtrack of my adolescnce and ever since hearing it, a week has not gone by that I dont wish for a time machine to take me back there.

Remember when he was OUR Private Joy? touched

My little secret, my private joy
I could never let another, play with my toy
My little angel from heaven above
Oh oh, oh oh oh I think I'm falling in love

And I ain't gonna tell nobody nobody 'bout my little pretty toy
All the other kids would love to love you but you're my little private joy
My private joy you're my private joy
Private joy, such a pretty toy
Joy, you are my private joy

You're my little lover, Orgasmatron
Only I know, only I know, baby, what turns you on
You're my little secret neon light
Girl I wanna turn it on, turn it on, turn it on every night

Ain't gonna tell nobody nobody 'bout my little pretty toy
All the other kids would love to love you but you're my little private joy
My private joy, you're my private joy
Private joy, such a pretty toy
Joy, oh my private joy

Shoot me up baby, let's take a trip
I can't get enough can't get enough of your private, private joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, such a, such a pretty toy
Joy, you are my private joy
Joy, shoot me up baby, let's take a trip
Joy, can't get enough of your private
Joy, come on honey baby get up
Get up

I strangled Valentino
(He strangled Valentino)
Been mine ever since
(Been his ever since)
If anybody asks you
(if anybody asks you)
You belong to Prince
(you belong to Prince)
Come on baby, get up

Get up
Get up
Get up

I would SOOOOO love to share the live VIDEO version of this, that I happen to have seen with my own eyes, just this year but alas - I simply just CANNOT because Prince - himself - PROHIBITS me from doing so. disbelief

Back then...I'd have NEVER believed in a million+ years that OUR Private Joy would turn into such a Royal Ass! fit
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I got into Prince in 84, but bought all the back catalogue straight away and Controversy was a favourite.

Also, in 82, I heard an instrumental dance number on Fame, and I loved it. Transfered it to audio cassette. 2 years later I realised it was 'Controversy'. So really he had me hooked far earlier than I knew.

Although not my favorite Prince album, but a great one nonetheless. This could get a reissue with greater sound but the bonus I really want with it is The Second Coming unreleased film with Prince,The Time and Zapp with Roger Troutman.A very nice document of Prince's early career probably ever captured the first time on film.
