You all can whine all you like but this is big. Two albums in the top ten? That is good.

What you said is true, but what other recording artist has had two albums of two distinct musical genres top the Billboard R&B Album Chart and Billboard Top Rock Album Chart. Considering that Prince is 36 years deep into his recording career, the numerous peaks and valleys his recording career has taken, this feat should be celebrated, regardless of low sales numbers.

3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Combined he's at something like 90,000 units. That's respectable by 2014 standards. I imagine it's going to fall completely off the charts next weeks, but it's a nice accomplishment all things considered.

Nope -- the industry's numbers are embarrassing. If that's what two top ten albums mean these days, it's a reflection of the industry's performance. It's very worrisome that it's all its top ten selers are selling, isn't it?

That said, yes, the records could definitely have sold more with an agressive promotion campaign, videos, tv appearances, a Golden ticket campaign, etc. But with a Purple Rain remaster on the horizon, a FunknRoll video waiting to be released and the announcement of a new tour, mayve we haven't heard the last of these albums. A Couple of Prince albums had second wind -- notably The Symbol Album (with Seven, after My Name is Prince flopped commercially) and Sign O' The Time (with U Got the Look being a hit after If I Was Your Girlfiend tanked).

I'd love the albums to have some impact but in the end if they don't it will just have to be our little secret. Who here gives a damn that Chaos and Disorder was a commercial dud, or Come and Lovesexy for that matter? So I love both album save for a song or two on PlectrumElectrum, I think it's Prince best effort in many years. Best of all, AOA is the first Prince album in decades I can listen to without reaching for the remote to skip ahead.

Prince is doing great, and you must be a fool to compare his sales with himself back in the days. Remember that these days people don't buy records.

Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" peaked at #2 on Billboard's Hot 100. "Purple Rain" (the single) also peaked at #2. Musical tastes aren't what they used to be, obviously. I'm very impressed with AOA and PE.

Both albums make the top ten in France as well.

I wonder how they are scoring internationally.

But yes, the sales volumes are ridiculous. No thanks to pathetic Bono, which annoyed everyone with U2's free album, a stupid commercial gesture that amplifies in people's mind the idea that music is worth nothing — but I admit, in the case of U2's album, it's an honest statement.

True.

But it was a physical CD, right? Not some QR Code to scan and then download.

To me 20Ten was more like
"it's worth something, but it's offered"
than
"you didn't ask for it, but have your iTunes/iPhone/iPad polluted with it".

TrevorAyer

sorry but in the 80's u had actual musicians making music .. now u have idiots behind computers writing songs for bands like u2 and prince and kiesha and gaga and all those other talentless hacks .. this is why nobody buys music .. the music sucks ass

when real bands really write and play real music that they actually wrote themselves and care about and it expresses honesty instead of "i got a lotta money and shake your ass for me" music will sell again just fine

y'all just don't wanna admit that it is the music itself that is killing the industry .. the industry killed songwriters and bands and the industry tries to peddle this garbage to the dumbest of the masses and even they are disinterested at this point

used to be the real music was right there alongside the bubble gum crap for 7 year old girls mothers to buy .. but not anymore .. its just all rubbish all the time .. thats what happens when u let target and walmart sell your records and u kill all the record stores ..

sorry but prince is right there in it still trying to sell the same old song about boobs and money and ass .. everyone knows way back home is the best thing on aoa but breakfast and clouds are what gets pushed and its the reason nobody will buy this record .. and with good reason .. a whole album of daring music like way back home would have sold a ton for sure .. but most of the record is pretty tame and boring .. 3eg is like listening to band of 13 year old girls play their first gig .. except it is in front of prince audience instead of the 12 fans they actually deserve at this point ..

this "by these days standards" crap is bs .. music is bad that is why it doesn't sell

stop making excuses when ur favorite artists sells out and makes meaningless music and it doesn't sell .. it is really no surprise and has nothing to do with anything but the quality of the music

look at adele or whinehouse .. nobody knew who they were and they just blew up because they had a sincere quality and good music and did something different .. didn't dumb down to 7 year old girls ... sold a shit ton of records .. so lets be real .. music that sucks wont sell.

Well, in that case, I've got issues too, because I agree with Trevor! I really wish there had been some more adventurous music a la Way Back Home on the new album. Tracks like Time and Clouds all are a bit "been there done that".
