Prince has always incorporated cheesy synth lines in his stuff and they have an aspect of humour involved

i was thinking about this a few days ago... his musical humour, and how for me sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't....i was listening to man in a uniform from the truth album... that trumpet part at the start drives me nuts

Hah, yeah. A perfect example of something that doesn't really work, even if it's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek.

Based on AOA and PE versions of "FunknRoll", make sure there is a pure funk no-reverb-no-delays version/mix of "The Gold Standard".

And if not, a future live version will surely be sped up, with bass, guitar licks and horns only.
Maybe a touch of hammond here and there.

The integrists will be most pleased.

There are many ways to define FUNK, funk can be fast and messy (like can be so nice), can be sparse (kiss/new position), can be slow and moody (joy in repetition) and can be a story (scarlette pussy). The key elements (if you want to define them) is personality, minor chords and seventh chords, off beat snare or bass, use of space and rythm together, and many many other things. But the common thread is that we all know it as Funk. Prince didnt invent funk, but he brought it to the mainstream like no other, perhaps you can say Micheal Jackson did too, but Prince was doing it to a commercial market in more purist way (I cant see someone like MJ releasing a Funk masterclass like "controversy" or "head".

In terms of deep and pure funk, there is no better example on Art Official Age than Time. to me, this song is up there with Joy in repition, and If I was your girlfriend as slow mood funk song, that might go on a bit, but you dont notice because its so hypnotic. Other songs on Art Official Age, are deceptively funky (ie they have hidden elements of funk, like Way Back Home, and U know). To me, Prince is still the master of funk, and is currently the best at it and will always be until he passes (just like James Brown was until he passed). You are born with it, and you die with it.

Peace.

That is not a funk song...it is more pop\hip hop.

Breakfast...Gold Standard are funky that is about it. The rest is ambient soul or a derivative of that...save for funk n roll...hip hop.

AOA is a decent modern album for a man who's done it all already.

The Gold Standard is my favorite tune.. not because its in the same league as other Prince Funk Classics.. ie: Erotic City, Housequake, Lets Work, Head ect.. Its NOT!

but because its nice to be reminded that Prince still can groove like he used to whenever he wants to.

The rest of the album is pretty much 20ten 3121 and anything else since the rainbow children era..

Not my cup of tea.. too digital.. too lacking in substance.. (substance i care about).

He was the man from for you - lovesexy.

today.. I'd prefer to see him rocking shows featuring only the Hits - minus the sampler segment.

The Gold Standard is funky, despite a somewhat unfunky chorus.

What it Feels like is a cool mellow funk song

FNR is very cool electronic funk

Time is classic Prince funk

U Know lacks funk

Clouds has a funky baseline, but the song aint funky

Breakdown lacks funk

Way Back Home (and Affirmation III) is devoid of funk

This Could Be Us aint got no funk

Art Officia Cage is the opposite of funk

Breakfast shows little signs of being funky.

So all in all, this is not a funk album to my ears. It has some funky moments, and the non funky moments are just as good, if not better.

This is a Prince album, simple as that. And anyway, when did Prince last do a funk driven album? 1987? Some would even say 1981! Prince's albums have by and large not been funk albums, but have contained many funk elements.

Clean 'pricise' Digital aint funky.

Compare P-funk/Bootsy/LarryGraham modern/digital albums with their 70's Analog ones.

Do the same w/ Prince up to the early 90's.

The Breakdown is sans funk for sure.

prince thinks clouds and pretzel body logic are both very funky .. and that is very sad

.

prince is a christian so he can't be funky .. christians are completely devoid of any spiritual connection to the vibrations of the universe .. it is scientifically impossible for a christian to be funky .. they are too busy hating gays and covering up child abuse scandals by their leaders .. they are too busy lying to themselves and everyone around them .. they are too busy preaching to open their ears and listen to a groove .. let alone come up with one on their own

.

prince is disco now .. he puts his bad lyrics in a computer and it churns out a 'song' .. real computings for real computer lovers .. prince be too clean to be funky .. prince be in the mirror more than he be in the band .. hell prince band be in the mirror more than they be in the band .. how much joy did those girls have on their face talking about their clothes .. when talking about the music they looked terrified and depressed

That bolded part is the most ignorant/uninformed statement that I've ever heard. All funk grooves and rhythms began in the black church with slave spirituals and gospel grooves. In fact, James Brown didn't know how to be funky until he experienced it in church. Do your homework playa before you make such idiotic statements. And, to be clear, I'm not calling you an idiot, but your statement surely is idiotic. Have you gotten to a point in your life that you are now so hateful that you don't care if you lie to prove your point or justify your dislike of Prince? Come on, man, you don't like Prince. But, must you lie about the history of black music and its relation to Christianity to justify your hatred of Prince? That's just sad playa. By, the way, since hip hop has all but destroyed African-American musicianship, the best soul and funk musicians play in the church or on the gospel circuit 'cause there ain't nowhere else left for them to play. So, you are wrong again. Those black Christian plays might be terrible, but the music is great 'cause it's traditional gospel, meaning it's an amalgamation of blues/soul/funk. Please read a book if you ain't gon' visit a church or a gospel play to experience the truth for yourself.

It was more a creation than an invention....but...

Oh, yeah, Newton was a Christian, and his mind seemed pretty open enough to create calculus. What is the last life-changing thing you've invented?

wait .. so a bunch of people yelling "praise jesus" while clapping defines funk?

.

yeah i get it .. black people invented EVERYTHING .. come off the reverse racist shit please .. just because the CULT of christianity USES funk to program it's cult worshipers does not mean they invented it ... and calculus has nothing to do with music .. while it is true many musicians understand math better as a result of understanding music .. math is essential a man made concept that does more to control the masses than it does to "change life" for the better for anybody ..

.

i invent all the time .. that is the nature of an artist, writer or composer of music .. i know my music changes peoples lives because sometimes .. years later .. people will tell me they sing some of my tunes to their children .. or ask me to post some old song of mine that they loved and want it to cheer them up or whatever .. i don't really need u to define my value .. that is the benefit of not having my life dictated by a CULT .. i can know my ownself without being defined by a snake oil salesman ..

.

furthermore i am not angry .. that is like when they say all black men are angry when they are just speaking the truth .. then they get called angry as a way to dismiss the validity of their point .. happens on the org all the time when people disagree .. but the point is christians are not funky .. maybe they try to imitate funk or whatever .. maybe some of them are even almost good at it .. i mean prince is christian and sometimes his music is a little bit funky in some weird overly conservative repressed sterile and neutered way .. but the fact is .. u must have a free mind and a willingness to experience all of reality, not just the christ slave version, to really feel tha funk .. it is a scientific fact supported by many articles in medical journals etc .. it's like saying christians can make hardcore gangsta rap .. or that christians are even funny .. it is literally impossible to connect with the real truth when your mind process is a state of denial and repression of free thinking
