Stopthistrain appreciation

Long story short. Thought I'd like only the Prince on lead vox songs off Plectrumelectrum. But I'm starting to GET this album as a whole. I'm starting to really feel it's vibe. And my first knee jerk reaction to Stopthistrain was...ok I'm not much into anything remotely reggae sounding and one of the girls are singing this one. But after a few spins, and Prince's churchly "ooooohs" opened the doors, I've been pulled in completely. The simple little ditty is so hypnotic and sexy. And it's the song I keep being drawn back to.

It reminds me of Walk Don't Walk...but I'd really have liked Prince to have sung it. He may have had to change a few things, but I wanted two Prince albums...all the female singers and rappers get on my nerves.

I love it!!!

.

I never did nor will understand this fascination people have for Prince doing the vocals. You never read something such as "oh I'm so pissed that it wasn't Prince playing the drums on that album"!

Prince fans wanting Prince to sing, whatever next?

Isn't it obvious? If I wanted to hear somebody else sing I would go seek out someone with a voice I like to hear. I'd rather Prince was singing all the PE tracks because I'm a Prince fan. Fuck me right? rolleyes

I think it's cute for what it is - a pop song. It's also catchy and memorable. I feel like it doesn't work for this particular record, though. They don't all have to be guitar rock scorchers, but this one sounds out of place. Maybe it's the electronic drums. The live-drum feel is important to this record, I think.

Really like this track, and of the ones he doesn't do the lead vocal on this is the one I most wish he did so I'd be more inclined to listen to it.

I understand it theorically but I can't really relate to it or experiment it, so in the end I guess no, I don't get it lol

For example I'd take Eric Leeds anytime over Candy Dulfer, but I don't think I ever though "oh wouldn't it have been great if Eric had been on Xpectation" instead of her. Neither did I ever think "OhI wish it was prince singing instead of Paul, Morris, Jill, Sheila, Bria, you name it...".

dodger

I saw Hannah and Josh dancing and miming to this at the end of a Hit & Run show in Manchester in February - I thought it was some Disney tune. I don't think it's so bad after listening a couple of times but it's so out of place on PE.

Vocals are so much different than instruments. It's easy to tell who is singing. If Prince has the right musician playing, you can't tell as quickly who is playing the part without really having a good ear for someone's style.

For most of these people, we NEVER would have heard them sing if Prince hadn't placed them on his albums. He hardly ever has well-known guests, Rave being a big obvious exclusion to that rule. For example...everybody's and my favorite punching bag: Tony M....there is a HUGE REASON he NEVER recorded anything before Prince or after Prince...no talent, and there was no incredible demand to hire a rapper with amazing skills for rapping about putting people's faces in manure.

Point? Prince just seems to have has beens and throwaway people making his albums with him. The singers and rappers on these new albums are not horrible, but in a few months, I will probably throw up if I hear that stupid voice asking "Mr Nelson.." I can barely tolerate it now.

Yeah, I guess. You count albums that aren't Prince albums as Prince albums too, so I see where you're coming from.

What's your favorite Prince song. Would it be you favorite Prince song if one of these bimbos was singing it?

No, I dont 'hate' this song, but could have just a one off tiune on 3rd eye girl instead of on the album,. Its got a nice melody, however interrupts the whole vibe on the album with those 90s drums and kid tingle synth patches going through non stop smh. Really needs a remix. I'll replace this one with Live out Loud sad

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Prince and reggae-related music can be a very dangerous combination imo. We either get something cool like Rippopgodazippa, something sweet and sugary like a Blue Light, or witness the horror that is I Rock Therefore I Am eek . On this occasion, I feel we got off lightly. Stopthistrain is quite pleasant and makes for some relief from the earlier hard rocking tracks on the album.

Also, maybe someone in P's circle needs to get the guts to tell him his 'space' bar stopped workin' on his laptop years ago wink .

Thanks. It would've probably been funnier if I hadn't made so many similar comments about my dislike for Tony M. I wish I could go through all the threads I've written online since about 1997, and take a "Greatest Hits on Tony M." smile
