WAY BACK HOME is a freakin' masterpeice....

When is the last time you heard a new Prince song and were miscerally moved by it's sheer power?

For me, the first time was one day watching MTV in 1982 with my dad and mysterious, curly-haired being sang this beautiful, sensual song about a red car to me...

Another time, one morning in September 1984 when LET'S GO CRAZY woke me up from my cheap $65 cassette/radio/alarm clock on the local radio station...

Then again, when I heard SIGN OF THE TIMES for the first time...

More recently a decade ago when I heard I LOVE U BUT I CAN'T TRUST U ANYMORE....

It's been awhile but WAY BACK HOME did it again.

The melody, lyrics, FREAKIN BACKGROUND VOCALS THAT SOUND LIKE SOFT CRYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AMAZING SONG!!!!!!!!

Perfect, really. Thank you, Prince.

I like it because it shows a vulnerability in Prince we've not seen in a long time. Usually, with the last decade of albums, his lyrics have been almost too preachy (like in 'FixUrLifeUp'). With 'Way Back Home,' the lyrics beautifully reflect the music. I think it's one of the better songs he's done in awhile.

And the best part is it proves he's still got it.

I love this song, for some reason it reminds me of joy in repetition. I love the sound effect, the simple drum beat, the clear spoken voice and of course affirmation III.

Very good song. I like the apparent honesty and interesting imagery. A couple of the lines are a bit too egotistical. 9/10

Heartbreakingly beautiful. The more I hear it the better I like it.

Exactly. It's brilliance lies in the fact that it retains its sparse, simple structure. No guitar solos, no smart-arse bridges, no big drum beat to detract from the feel.

RODSERLING

Nobody recognised the strong similitudes with Forbidden love from Sakamoto, which is basically the same song with a more constructed melody ?

YES! I Love it too, thanks for a dedication thread for it, OP..!

The only gripe I have with this song that it is too short, and kinda segues into Funknroll without a real outro, coda, or anything that really ends it... But other than that, probably the greatest Prince song since a long, long time...

It's mostly the lyrics that impress me. It reminds me of Anna Stesia, Letitgo or Reflection or the unreleased version of Old Friends 4 Sale: very intimate, very honest. This alone makes it a milestone prince song IMHO. It's a beautiful track indeed!

Comeback

Those are the sort of songs I place Way Back Home next to - the times when Prince is displaying some vulnerability.

Nothing will ever beat The Beautiful Ones in this regard, but these songs are magnificent in their own way as well.

Way Back Home will rightly be remembered as the best thing about these albums in years to come.

So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

It's the best song he's written in years due to its honesty and insight. It'll be one that sits with his other greats for me.

I didnt like it on first listen, now I think it is one of the centerpieces that pulls the album together cry touched

I like Havas background vocals, sounds like she is about to cry, adds emotion

Agreed. It's a beautiful, stand-out song that already sits with tracks such as 'Joy in Reptition', 'Anna Stesia' and 'Forever in my Life' for me.
