Wow versus The Unexpected by Liv Warfield...

OK since they are exactly the same song - which performance do you prefer? Personally I think I like the instrumentation better on Wow but like the vocals better on "The Unexpected" as Liv brings some power and soul - Prince honestly sounds a little weak and plastic on the vocals (my opinion).

Cheers..,

I love Wow by Prince, it's 1 out of 2 great songs on PlecElec...

I can't imagine I would like anything by Liv.. I have never heard her version.....

There's a utube of it on another thread. How open minded of u to just assume u wouldn't like it. Liv and them killed it. Their version sounds great! There's a lot of style and pinache in Liv's version. I don't care for P's at all. It sounds so very uninspired. Hers is alive and bursting at the seams.

I firmly believe some prefers P's version for the sole fact that prince sang it and for no other reason.

I honestly don't see a comparison between the 2, liv having outdone his so well. No ones ever given a reason why they prefer Princes either...they just 'like it more'...no reason though.

I thought Prince version would be better but unfortunately thats not the case, I know I rated Wow high at first but now Im kind bored with it already. The unexpected is a bit better imo

Liv's version, by a country mile.

All of my hang-ups have gone. How I wish you felt the same.

Yep.
I'm with OP too, power and soul from Liv. Wow sounds weak in comparison. Maybe primacy effect but I don't think so.

Prince version. By far.

The band is better.

The arrangement is better , It's true to it's Rock vibe.

Prince vocals are top notch to my taste.

And most importantly, It has ,Yet another , one of his enormous guitar solo at the end.

He can put more soul into a minute long solo than liv's version.

Liv as an artist has never really clicked for me. I streamed her latest album when it first came out, and "Blackbird" was the only track that really grabbed me. shrug

I love "Wow." It's kind of a "slow burn" track, and P's guitar solo is KILLER! eek guitar

I really dig "The Unexpected" album, but the song itself drags on record...
Live is where this song kills, but on record Prince's version is better and stronger...

Agree. Liv's vocal range really do the song justice. When I saw her sing it live at North Sea Jazz she blew the roof off. Prince's version is 2 lightweight almost like ghost/demo vocals!! Major props 2 Liv. Looking 4ward 2 more from her.

Get well soon Rosie Gaines.

Wow I'm shocked anybody would prefer Liv's over Prince's. The energy is blazing. Liv version just sucks the air out of the song for me. The 3rd eye version is crazy. I've listened to it like 5 times in a row love it. Gotta get them lyrics.

I think WOW is a new Prince classic, but The Unexpected is at least it's equal. Listening to Liv's The Unexpected for the first time today and absolutely loving every bit of it. No wonder this hasn't seen a real promotion and physical release. IT'S WAAAYYY BETTER THAN BOTH OF PRINCE'S NEW CDs!! HOLY SMOKES!!!!

What do you mean? He got her on two national US programs to perform. He helped her tour pretty extensively with the NPG Horns for dates in the US and Europe. He also blasted it on social media very often. When you're dealing with NPG records, that is real promotion, less we have selective memory of NPG/Paisley Park protege albums. The lack of physical release may have had something to do with the deal with Kobalt. Not sure. I think both of Liv's albums are good, but whether someone likes it better than Prince music is an issue of personal taste. I listened to her album about 10 times but haven't touched it since. I agree its good, but its not a genre/style that keeps me interested.

Change it one more time..

Liv's version.

My wife and I loved her whole album and we were excited to hear Prince's version of WOW. And were both underwhelmed. I've gotten used to WOW, but Liv's version is still better to us. She's a huge talent and great live!

One of my favorite Prince-penned songs of the last couple years.

True... and Liv blew the roof off of both appearances, but she deserves more of a proper marketing campaign and budget. It's just like Prince to let the best music fall by the wayside. There is no cd for this record, and that it is a joke, even for Prince, who fucks up marketing on most projects. This is criminal. This is the only Prince protoge's cd, since Sheila E, that can run with The Time/Original 7even. Can we push Purple Rain back? Liv's cd is the one to release.

As for your point about personal taste, I get it, but some things are quantifiable in terms of how much skill, knowledge and talent it takes to achieve a specific result. In that regard, Liv's album sounds like an advanced pro talent put it together and PE and AOA sound as if Prince was only mildly interested, and when he was the most he came up with were two loosely organized lipstick-on-a-pig vanity projects, lol. And even with that, most fans are doing cartwheels in their sleep because thats a better result than anything Prince has put out in perhaps decades. Fact. Whoever produced Liv should have produced Prince.

I forgot that he financed the production of her video for Why do You lie.

As far as production, she had several producers on many of the tracks so the result of her album was a team effort.

I'm so glad that I can enjoy the entire pie and not need to slice Prince into pieces and say that this is better than that. With that said, I love both versions. Both vocals are equally urgent, powerful, and seductive in their own manner. They both punch me in the gut and squeeze my heart. And, they both are by two bad MFers who know what the hell they are doing. The ultimate for me would be to see them dual on this live with Prince beginning the song, of course, and Liv taking the mic at the end and taking us to the cafe and then to church while Prince's guitar solo is setting fire to the building.

Liv makes the 'Bee to a Honey, Moth to a flame' bit sound even more naff than Prince.

Interesting. Some tracks sound like they are written by Prince, but not produced by him and others sound like they may feature Prince, but not as a writer. All around, it's an incredibly strong album. I've got to get more info so I can know who to praise. Particularly for Your Show and Stay. Incredible album, listening to it for the 3rd time now on my laptop. I need a cd! biggrin
