AOA : Rate and describe in one line.

Can we try something here?

I want everyone on the org to give a rating (out of 5) for Art Official Age and a one sentence description. No discussion. No debating with any other members. No track by track. Just a rating and one sentence.

Cool?

Here we go.

Rating - 4.5/5

A true jewel in his catalog, Art Official Age is a triumph of slick, conceptual radical funk pop that brings new depths, new highs and a shot of futuristic adrenaline to the post-millenium career of music's most enigmatic genius.

er

3/5.
Funky, weird and horny as ever(what do you expect from Prince), it gets too monotonous halfway through, but at least he's doing some serious soul-searching songwriting again.

A nice enough collection of songs comparable to what's on albums like 3121 and 20Ten sandwiched between a few newer sounding pieces that have production values reminiscent of the sound design stuff in contemporary video games or movie trailers.

Echos of the past as he lands in the present, within both the concept of the album and it's musical delivery.

3.5/5.

It's good but not great because I know that Prince can top this when he finds another piece of the answer that most of us are looking for and this feels like another step for him towards that destination but that road never ends.

Great album: it's better than 3121, Planet Earth, Musicology, Lotusflower - anything released since 2001 - however it's not another masterpiece like Lovesexy, Parade, 1999, Around The World, Sign "☮" The Times, Dirty Mind, Purple Rain

(I rate Emancipation, Crystal Ball & The Rainbow Children: 8/10 as well)

3.5 out of 5.

Despite the fact that I do not like 5 of the songs on the album, Prince has managed to fit them into the context of a cohesive concept album. As always, the concept is flimsy and uninteresting, but where he shines here is in the emotions of the album. It's not the preach father figure nonsense so we've had to put up with lately. It actually sounds like a person with real emotions this time around.

Prince samples himself to creat his funkiest album since the Black Album, which flows consistently from start to finish with some exceptional lyrics over multilayered beats - welcome back sir!

All of you who put ratings out of 10, I've changed them to ratings out of 5 as specified in the original post, for consistency. Thanks.

The biggest barrier between Prince and great music is that intangible old-man-Prince sound, and there's relatively little of it here.

.

If Josh is responsible for that, then he has done well.

He's pushing himself here, and seems to have finally stopped chasing that elusvie hit hook, but that means he's relying on texture and rhythm instead, which doesn't always pull through.
