Would Prince be more appreciated if he had started out in the 60's?

Just say Prince started out in what some people call the decade of music , the 60's. Would he be more appreciated today by the general public. It seems people like Jimi H, James B , The Beatles , David Bowie , Pink Floyd , The Who, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and many more are. It seems they could do no wrong and if all was alive today they would still be selling records and arenas out. I know Prince fills some arenas and sell records still, but what do people here think.

Well he wouldn't be Prince since he's largely influenced by what came in the '60s and '70s.

No

He came along in the right time,

it's more about the directions he's taken

As well as his lack of allowing himself and his legacy to be appreciated

i am curious as to where some folks want his career to be..He is a rnr hofmer..he has the highest booking rates in the biz, he along with the beatles have teh highest music licensing fees..he is revered int he industry..he has aged gracefully in the industry..and i do beleive he has the career HE WANTED.

you looka t late night tv,, starts arent talking about partying with dylan, springsteen, gaga, beyonce and jay,, the highlight of their life is talking about partying with Prince..i have heard it too many times, from randonm folks to Drea from Sopranos talking about danicng in his living room with her dad whilst he played.

He pays it fwd to a new generation ; from hannah, josh, donna, liv, marcus, danielle, stella blu, andy, madison, the si model..his leagacy is intact

I think he took some wrong directions. I won't say they were A LOT but

I can look at video access for example. Many fans/would be fans can view that part of Prince's legacy they way you can most other entertainers.

Access to past concerts is another. This aspect of his career and legacy can give light to why Prince is.

Those 2 aspects are really important. And he really needs to have his albums remastered as well as the protege music. There are certain reason beyond just Purple Rain why he became a superstar

Yes i agree , that's the one beef i have with Prince , he just won't let all his great music videos and concerts be on Yt or anywhere on the internet. This i find frustrating when telling my friends and peeps there so much brilliance to see and they ask where man

I see your point, but who wants to compete with their past? I think he recognizes his past, but he doesn't want to live in the past artistically. Thus, the embargo on his older stuff. I think that's why we haven't seen any concert releases from the past.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

What I think u miss here is

- the fact that there's a time factor. When prince reaches the venerable age of those people he will reach a similar cult status. He's not far from that anyway: prince is considered a major pop iconat least in artistic, media and hip circles, and he's been considered such for a while. Besides, I'm not sure whether 20+ kids nowadays are that familiar with the likes of the acts you mantion above.

- the fact that this generation of artists were the founders of the modern pop/rock/soul/funk era. There was popular music before but from roughly 1955 to 1975, pop music became a true expression of popular subcultures and a very significant factor in the birth of the youth culture and hip culture that dominate the developed world today. 80's and 90's artists were kind of a second wave, and no matter their impact they were the next generation in a social phenomenon that existed before them and had contributed shaping their own identities, not the ones who contributed to make this major cultural shift in the first place.

Yeah I think you're right here. I saw on Twitter recently that Rolling Stone had named 1984 as the best year in pop history and someone commented rather amusingly on it that the Gen Xers had finally seized control from the Baby Boomers. I think as people who grew up with Prince's music gradually assume positions of authority in the critical landscape his cultural capital will grow and he will be recognised as the truly brilliant artist he is (or was, depending on whom you ask).

Now one is asking him in that instance to live in his past. Even though he continued to continually perform 90% of the music from that period.

.

You can't hide the thing the times that made you the superstar you are today.

If someone asked me as a fan "why is Prince so well known and respect, why is he talked about?" As a fan I can pull up music(whether I should have it or not) albums/proteges albums, boots/unrel, concerts, performance, videos (the one's I've been able to get a hold of) and really break it down, talk about the behind the scenes stuff.

.

If some is watching an awards show and Here is Prince, people cheering he's walking out to Sexy MF, or there is an award show. Someone asks a question: who is Prince and why is he___ they won't so easily be able to get a good reply even in online searching on why

Nah....Prince is very much appreciated among fellow artists, critics and such...

The biggest issue with Prince is he refuses to utilize the true power of social media. I'm not talking about simply joining Twitter (which he did)....He has cleared a hurdle there...It's his silly scrubbing of YouTube and other video driven sites....

An entire new generation who get their videos, music and images from YouTube can't type of the words "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" and hear pure genius. And they won't be able to pull up the "Kiss" video....

That's my biggest issue with Prince right now...

But beyond that, dude has a pretty good album on his hands with AOA....He def. seems re-energized...

Please explain why virtually all of his previous non-WB releases are currently unavailable, and how that is making him money. Seriously, do it.

.

Also explain how having no videos on YouTube is making him money. Seriously, do it.

If it's about dollars, then he should make sure these things are available for purchase because I would buy.

But that's not only what we are talking about. I'm mostly talking about access to videos/award show performances etc
