how much MIDI does he use at shows?

Saw both nights at DNA with 3EG and it seemed like there was a fair bit of backing tracks being used.

Just curious, not critical.

No real idea how much he is using it currently. There might not be MIDI at all, of course, just prerecorded audio tracks. Okay, in pure technical terms, the click track for the drummer is often synced with MIDI and it's used for some other minor applications, but I don't think any MIDI sequencing is necessary live.

The 3rd Eye Girl shows don't use backing tapes, until "Prince Karaoke Hour" starts, and he plays tapes of past hits, and sings over them. "Real Music by Real Tapes." The NPG shows use more backing tapes, but not really in a disruptive way. Songs like If I Was Your Girlfriend and Forever In My Life have been performed with backing tapes, for obvious reasons.

Yeah, I got it.

Some electronic artists just use MIDI live for the sequenced synth and drum machine stuff. They can alter the sequences on the fly that way, which is not something that Prince seems interested in. So there's a difference.

I like the "Prince Karaoke Hour". I don't mind variety. It's a cool change up. Now I wish he would do a whole show around a theme.

He uses audio samples that are sometimes triggered by midi (drumpads or keys on a midi controller). But everything is triggered/played LIVE, no prerecorded tracks synced to a click track.

I might be wrong, but I sensed a fair bit of MIDI being used during the "Welcome 2" tour.

The relevant question is "how was it used?", though. When a keyboarder uses MIDI to control external soft-synths, it doesn't mean he's not playing live.
