Trying to work out which albums are flawless

Being somewhat bored at work, and seeing Militants response in the Dirty Mind v Controversy thread stating "Dirty Mind is damn near flawless", I though I would go through each album and see how many songs I dont care for or would skip on each album. Here is the result of my afternoon's noodling:

Songs I dont care for or would skip on each album:

For You: In Love, Baby, So Blue
Prince: With you, Still Waiting
Dirty Mind: None
Controversy: Ronnie...
1999: Something in the Water
PR: I Would Die 4 U
ATWIAD: America, Temptation
Parade: None
SOTT: U Got the Look, Beautiful Night, Slow Love
BA: Dead On It
Lovesexy: None
Batman: Arms of Orion
GB: Release It, Thieves in the Temple, GB, Round & Round
D&P: D&P, Walk dont Walk, Jughead, Live 4 Love
Symbol: None
Come: Come, Pheromone, Solo, Letitgo, Orgasm
TGE: Dolphin, 319, Shy
C&D: Dig U Better Dead, Had U
Emmancipation: Right back here..., One Kiss at a time, Curious Child, Betcha By..., Dreamin about u, White Mansion, Lets have a baby, I cant make u love me, the Plan, La la la..., My Computer, Da da da, Sleep Around, Damned if I do.
Crystal Ball: Crystal Ball, Ripopgodazippa, 2morrow, So Dark, Tell Me How U Wanna B Done, Cloreen Baconskin, Poom Poom, 18 & Over, Get Loose, P. Control (Remix)
The Truth: 3rd eye, Dionne, Man In A Uniform, Animal Kingdom, Fascination
Kamasutra: ALL OF IT!
The Vault: My Little Pill
Rave Un2: Undisputed, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold, Hot Wit U, The Sun..., Everyday Is A Winding Road, Man'O'War, Silly Game
Rave In2: Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold, Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix), The Sun..., Man'O'War (Remix), Silly Game
TRC: Digital Garden, The Work pt1, Wedding Feast, Family Name
ONA: Have A Heart, Objects In The Mirror, Avalanche, Young And Beautiful, Arboretum
ONA Live: Avalanche, Family Name, Take Me With U, Raspberry Beret
It Aint Over: We Do This, Just Friends...
Xpectation: All songs beginning with X
N.E.W.S: N, E, W, S
Musicology: A Million Days, Life 'O' The Party, Cinnamon Girl, What Do U Want Me 2 Do?, The Marrying Kind, If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life, Dear Mr. Man, Reflection
Chocolate Invasion: Sexmesexmenot, The Dance, Gamillah, U Make My Sun Shine
Slaughterhouse: Golden Parachute, Hypnoparadise, Northside, Peace, 2045: Radical Man
C-Note: Copenhagen, Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo
3121: The Word, Incense & Candles
Planet Earth: Guitar, Future Baby Mama, Mr Goodnight, Lion of Judah, Resolution
Indigo Nights: Rock Steady, Whole Lotta Love, Misty Blue, Baby Love
Lotusflow3r: 4Ever, Feel Better..., Love like Jazz, 77 Beverly Park, Wall of Berlin
MPLSOUND: Chocolate Box, Here, Valentina, Better with Time
20Ten: Sticky Like Glue, Walk in the Sand, Sea of Everything, Laydown
Plectrum Electrum (so far): Pretzelbodylogic
Art Official Age (So Far): The Breakdown

So in conclusion, and in my not so humble opinion, it is apparent that I think Prince has made 4 flawless albums: Dirty Mind, Parade, Lovesexy and Symbol. Everything else has a song or many that I just dont like very much, or at all.

It seems that there are a lot more songs I dislike post the WB years. razz

DISCLAIMER: This list is based purely on my opinion and my opinion alone, thus making it fact. Any list that claims anything different to this list is a lie. I am telling you what is good and bad about Prince albums so that you do not have to form an opinion yourself. You may thank me below. smile

I'm frankly staggered by your list. It includes a lot of P's finest material.

Yeah, that list includes too many good songs. Prince may have played Take Me With U and Raspberry beret into overkill live, but I wouldn't skip them normally, and would NEVER skip them after first getting the albums.

But to try to answer the question....

The first six albums are technically flawless in my mind. I never listen to Partyup that much, or Do It All Nite, but they are not bad songs. I have to get to Around The World In A Day where I skip The Ladder, but again, not a bad song...pretty much the same with Parade, I may not love I Wonder U, but it's a good song...only when I get to SOTT, which is my favorite, do I really skip....and that would be It's Gonna Be A Long, Long, Boring Night. That song just takes so long. Crystal Ball would've been a better choice if he wanted a long song, or he coulda picked any 2 from: the original version of Old Friends 4 Sale and Moonbeam Levels or Witness 4 The Prosecution...

From 1990 on, there are multiple songs I would skip from most albums....Lotus Flow3r is the only post 1989 album that I don't skip a track on...and that's only the LF Disc...MPLS and Elixer have multiple skips for me.

omg .. skip 'something in the water'?!?!?!

that song is THE reason I listen to 1999 .. everything just leads up to that song .. one of his best songs ever

if we are talking "flawless"

PARADE

PURPLE RAIN

THE FAMILY

then ..

SOTT only because the greatness of certain songs completely makes you forget that a couple songs are just ok

1999 .. same as sott but it's really only Free that keeps this one from being truly flawless

everything else is spotty or complete garbage

Relax people, they aint all songs I would skip, but songs that, to my ears, prevent the album from being flawless. For an album to be flawless it needs every song to be a 10/10. In fact I skip very few songs until we get to the mid/late 90's albums and beyond. Hell, I dont even skip Jughead (sometimes) razz

Yeah, Parade has become my favorite album over the last few years. Such an interesting and diverse album, and great production. It is pretty much flawless indeed.

Dirty Mind and Parade. Both are flawless. I could take 12 songs from Emancipation and make a flawless album, but perhaps that's not saying much.

shocked 'It' is one of my absolute favourite songs. The only change I would make to SOTT is replacing 'It's Gonna be a Beautiful Night' with Crystal Ball or Joy in Repeition and Shockadelica. Despite that, I'd still say SOTT is flawless.

My list:

Dirty Mind

1999

Parade

Sign O the Times

Damn Near Flawless:

Purple Rain

Lovesexy

The Rainbow Children

Adorecream

Its very hard to do this, as it depends on my moods. If I am a bit sick of a song or not feeling it, I will skip it no matter how good it is. That said I will list the songs I never listen to on each album.

.

A lot of better songs I may skip part way thru at time, as sometimes I don't want to or have time to listen to all 9 and a half minutes of automatic.

I am borrowing your layout Rebel Juice to save typing time for me

Songs I dont care for or would skip on each album:

For You: For You, So Blue
Prince: With you, Still Waiting, When were dancing close and slow
Dirty Mind: None - Totally agree, can listen to it multiple times
Controversy: Ronnie..., Jack u Off - Rest is amazing Prince music
1999: None all tho I may skip the last 4 minutes of the long songs like DMSR and Automatic as they noodle on.
PR: None, its flawless
ATWIAD: None - Just great stuff, may skip end of Temptation though
Parade: Venus de Milo (Sorry its boring zzzzzzz)
SOTT: Beautiful Night last part occasionally, but always play the last minute when they do "Confusion".
BA: Dead On It, Bob George, 2 Nigs united for west compton
Lovesexy: None - Agree, I used to not like Dance On, now I love it!!!
Batman: Arms of Orion, Lemon Crush, Vicki Waiting, Trust
GB: Release It, GB, Round & Round, Love Machine, Latest Fashion, Melody Cool, New Power Generation Both parts
D&P: Jughead only some of the time, I love this album and it was the one that lured me into the Prince world
Symbol: My name is Prince (Tony M rap part), The Max, Blue Light, Arrogance, The Flow, all the segues, God created woman, Sacrifice of Victor
Come: Solo, Orgasm -Rest is top notch Prince, although I may shorten Come from time to time
TGE: We March - Seems out of place here, rest is just first rate
C&D: I Rock therefore I am, Had U - rest is decent
Emmancipation:, the Plan, La la la..., Da da da, Mr Happy, Face down, New World, Slave, We gets up, Get yo groove on, Friend Mother sister wife or whatever the fuck its called,
Crystal Ball: Tell Me How U Wanna B Done, Get Loose, Make yo mamma happy, Calhoun Square,
The Truth: 3rd eye, Animal Kingdom, Fascination
Kamasutra: ALL OF IT!

Newpowersoul: All except The One, Wasted Kisses and Come on
The Vault: The rest of my life, althought rest is average rather than good
Rave Un2: Undisputed, The Sun..., Strange but true, Pretty Man, Silly Game, the empty 4 minutes of Wherever you go, So far so pleased (Sounds like a bad Roxette rip off)
Rave In2: All of it except Beautiful Strange which eye love
TRC: All of it except She loves me 4 me, Last December, 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
ONA: Only heard bits and pieces, don't like it
ONA Live: As above
It Aint Over: As above
Xpectation: Haven't heard it
N.E.W.S: N, E, W, S - agree its jazzique crap
Musicology: A Million Days, Life 'O' The Party, What Do U Want Me 2 Do?, Dear Mr. Man, Reflection - Agree not a bad album just boring
Chocolate Invasion: Haven't heard
Slaughterhouse: Haven't heard
C-Note: Haven't heard
3121: The Word
Planet Earth: , Future Baby Mama, Mr Goodnight, Resolution
Indigo Nights: All of it - Yuk, worst live album ever
Lotusflow3r: All of the Instrumentals - too many
MPLSOUND: None I love this shit and all of the ballads
20Ten: Everybody loves me
Plectrum Electrum and Art Official Age (So Far): From what I have not sure which album each track on - Ain't gonna miss you when I'm gone, Xtralovable, Fixurlifeup,

Again early albums are better overrall than later ones. Absolute flawless albums are very rare, but many with only 1 or 2 bum tracks are quite common. Thats Prince for you, 90% of his stuff you love and the other 10% is the worst shit ever made.
