Very hard to say because Dirty Mind is THE classic Prince album, but the song Controversy is my absolute favourite. so.... it's a tie

How beautiful do the words have to B, before they conquer every heart

I think there have been threads about this subject before. Each time I've always been amazed at the number of people who prefer Controversy. Like, that opinion wouldn't even cross my mind at all. Don't get me wrong, I think Controversy's great, but Dirty Mind is basically Prince knocking it out of the park for every second that it's playing. It's conceptually brilliant in its revolutionary sexuality, and the songs connect immediately and never let up. Its concise length also means that it doesn't outstay its welcome, which I love, considering the number of albums that are content to ramble on for 60+ minutes in the CD age.

I suppose one could say that Controversy has overall more indisputable Prince classic tracks, like the title track and Do Me Baby, but overall the album is so disparate in style and theme that it never coalesces into a brilliant whole like Dirty Mind. Plus the fact that Prince focuses far more on political themes in Controversy also detracts from it a little in my eyes, let's face it, Prince is a far clumsier songwriter when he's talking about social issues rather than screwing.

As I said, they're both great, but DM clearly is the winner in my book.

Dirty Mind.

I've always felt the Controversy album (fantastic as it is when judged in isolation) suffers by comparison to DM. For me it's DM pt2, but a bowlderised version.

I think Controversey is one of the most overatted Prince albums. First 3 songs - good. Let's Work - also good.

I also prefer the DM Tour to the Controversery one.

Like 'em both but Dirty Mind is a better collection of songs as a whole.

It has to be Dirty Mind. It's an album I listen to from front to back on a pretty regular basis. Uptown is my favorite Prince song.

Controversy is absolutely dope. Do Me Baby is my favorite slow jam. The album doesn't hit my top 5.

These two albums define Prince. I'm a big fan of 1999 and SOTT, but there is an edge to these albums that I think define him.

If I had to choose, it would be Dirty Mind. We sometimes forget how rare it was for a black artist to put out that type of record at the time.

Controversy for me. The first album with the sound that would achieve greatness. Lower voice, linn, sex and politics.

I like DM, but mostly for the title track, When you were mine and Head. Production sucks and makes it sound far older than it actually is.

Controversy by far. Sure, Dirty Mind has more historical significance, because that's where Prince found his sound, it's where his lryical themes became more interesting and sexy. But the songs on Controversy are just better...but that's just my opinion...not anybody's facts smile

Contro:

Incredible Songs: Annie Christian, Let's Work

Grade A songs: Controversy, Sexuality, Do Me Baby, , Private Joy,

Grade B-C songs: Ronnie Talk 2 Russia, Jack U Off

D Mind:

Incredible Songs: (None) ...Gotta Broken and Uptown are close though...

Grade A songs: Dirty Mind, When You Were Mine, Uptown, Head, Gotta Broken Heart Again

Grade B-C songs: Do It All Nite, Party Up, Sister

I agree with this.I think Dirty Mind is a tighter, more focused album.

Controversy is great, but mixing the political stuff with the sexual stuff...Idk,sometimes it feels sorta awkward."Private Joy" is a wonderful track, though.

Controversy hands down. There's NOTHING like "Do me baby" or "private joy" on DM - both insanely good albums though..

As a whole Dirty Mind is the better album, it is very coherent and flows perfectly. But as far as individual songs I think I prefer Controversy.

Side A (Controversy, Sexuality and Do Me Baby) is a complete knockout, 'Prince perfection' I would say, and Let's Work and Annie Christian are very good as well. It is just that I can't stand Ronnie Talk To Russia, Private Joy and Jack U Off, these are songs that I am not able to enjoy at all (anymore).

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Controversy and Do Me are EVERYTHING! Those two songs>>>>> Dirty Mind. I can play those two songs over and over again - and would prefer to listen to those two songs over alot of today's music.
