boyfriend

This track was a sneaker for me. I had once heard a song with an acoustic guitar and turribly hi falsetto that I didn't like AT ALL. I thought the track was named boyfriend. For years I skipped and avoided the track with this name. The the new albums tracklist got put out and I mixed up boytrouble with boyfriend and went to check out a known unlickedntrack again to see if my opinion changed.

Come to find out its NOT what I thought AT ALL and was an entirely different track with a slinky horns and a plucky, funky bass line and a tasteful middle eastern/Arabic(pls forgive my ignorance)vibe underneath the whole thing. Awesome track. I'm mad I've slept on it all these years and mad it hasn't ended up on an album.

Now I'm wondering what track I was confusing this with... confuse

The lyrics are so juvenile and cringe-worthy, that's it's hard to get past that for me. I can't believe a 55 year old man wrote that.

But, the tune and delivery are also paint-by-numbers meh to me. shrug

I fund the lyrics amusing. Juvenile? Maybe....but its kinda the point. The point of the song is immature behavior...messing around with occupied territory. I didn't hear anything cringeworthy.

I have had similar little 5 minute fantasies play out in my mind about a woman/girl here, there, or somewhere else, who is obviously taken but I still find socially or sexually attractive.

As for paint by numbers? God forbid he didn't rewrite the concept for making music in this ditty. Shame shame shame.

You're confusing it with "That Girl Thang".

Wondering why both tracks (That Girl Thang, Boyfriend, Groovy Potential, Da Bourgeoisie..) are not included in the forthcoming albums... eek

Cos they don't fit the vibe of the album as a whole. That's typically why tracks don't make albums. Though I'll never understand why "Interactive" didn't make it onto TGE or Come despite appearing on early configurations of both those albums... lol

Yeah I really wish Interactive had got a release on one of those albums as well, it's one of his all time great rockers imo, shame he hasn't resurrected it live with 3rd Eye Girl, that would be amazing.

RE boyfriend, I am slowly discovering that these tracks which were available for download on the 3rd Eye Girl website (alas no longer, which really irritates me, why would you force people to turn to piracy?) really have quite a bit more merit to them than I thought they did at the time, when I somewhat dismissed them. Oddly the lilting melody of Boyfriend reminds me a bit of Pearls B4 Swine, which is a tad strange given how disparate the songs are otherwise.

I think this is a better song than Breakfast Can Wait -- but it needed better production in the first place.

I forgot to say: I think thematically, Prince doesn't want any song where he appears bitter or angry, he wants to be zen and greater things. Boyfriend is on the bitter side -- the decidedly not so bizarre love triangle.

Anyway, I am excited about the albums, mostly his. It's going to be a very interesting time to be a Prince fan. He's not going to please everyone (I can't even get into Pretzelbodylogic....), but I think the majority of tracks stand a good chance of being great Prince music. Nothing that will blow Adore or Irresistable Bitch out of the water, but a good reboot of Prince's sound in AOA and a rcck album that is just gravy but that already has some decent cuts (Fixurlifeup, Screwdriver) and that's light years ahead of his previous girl groups? I've been waiting for Prince to make up for his misogynistic past and that's why I look at 3EG a certain way.

I think it was cuz his release real estate was limited at the time with Warners and it was already released with and attached to the CD game thingy.

He doesn't have to rewrite anything with each single.

But, he could at release good singles. This song ain't that.

Probably because it's a bit too simplistic as a composition for Prince at the time to feel entirely comfortable about it. Nothing wrong with simplicity when it works, of course, but Prince doesn't really do that type of "the guitar riff is the same as the vocal melody" thing (the P-funk posse did though).

Rebeljuice

Wasnt it officially labelled as a demo anyway? So a fuller sounding, finished product may lie in the vaults, perhaps to appear on something in the future. Not that I care for the song one way or the other.

It wasn't a "single". It was a one off release on 3rdeye for 79 cents.
There is no William Jung vocal or or animal kingdom lyric or gangsta glam remix vibe that turns it into a bad song. Its a decently good song that, understandably, some will not like. It doesn't mean is a bad song. It just a song u don't like.

But I suppose none of that is true and u just have superior taste as well as a musical knowledge that gives something as subjective as music such a well defined label. I wish my taste was as good as yours so I wouldn't be inclined to enjoy this 79 cent non-album demo.

I think my penchant for the hornheadz sways me as they didn't he horns in this tune. Its no bjb, but I like their work.

For the record..the works cited aren't inherently bad songs....just song that I and many others dont like. Except maybe William Jung...that fool couldn't catch a key if landed in his palm.

I think you're resorting to conjecture.

I simply stated that song was awful. You stated it was great.

I've not criticized you four your tastes--why are you so offended by mine? lol

It's an awful track.

Yup, Boyfriend was supposed to be on the soundtrack. Never really sounded finished to me which is why it didn't make the cut.
