I had forgotten about that one. Yeah, that's another one that caught my ear at the time and I found it to be the closest thing to funk on that album. I remember being pissed that the closest thing to funk on the album was also the shortest track on the album. But it still didn't satisfy me though because I was like...."This one feels kinda funky but also, what in THE hell....dammitt, this is 1985, not 1965! This bitch thinks he's a damn hippy now!". lol

Did you prefer solo Morris Day in 1985/6?

I preferred both Morris and Jesse when they were in The Time but also loved their solo albums in the late 1980s much moreso than what Prince was doing during that era. They were continuing with his sound while Prince hadn't exactly abandoned his sound because he was still using the synths and the LINN but he had changed it and altered it to start mixing retro with a current sound. I love the late 80s Prince albums now and even grew to love them while they were still popular but each Prince album during the late 1980s, I considered a disappointment. I liked them but it still wasn't Prince "snapping out of it" and going back to his previous self.

Sgt Peppers had a no single announcement?

Well, it sorta did. Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny lane were released as two A-Sides, making them somehow excluded from Sergeant Pepper's. They originally were to be included in the album. So you could say that that double a side release was an unofficial singles release of what was to come with Pepper's.

They weren't on Sgt. Pepper's because interstitial singles weren't generally included on Beatles albums in the UK. The single was released because Brian Epstein asked the band if they had any new material to release after the Yellow Submarine/Rigby single. They were never intended to be on Sgt. Pepper's but George Martin later wished that they had been. So, it sorta didn't.

It's like saying 'F.U.N.K' was a single announcement for Lotusflow3r. It's not on that abum, so it can't be a 'single' from that album and wasn't related to the album other than the fact that it came out during a period between albums by a single artist.

But, both songs ended up on Mystery Tour later, so who the fuck knows anything about anything?

Ive never really understood the disconnect between ATWIAD and PR. Some say it was a complete change of styles but I just don't hear that. It is different but the ingredients are all there. The Linn drum marries the two together. Baby Im a Star and America could almost be twins under the surface and the Ladder, musically, has always sounded like Purple Rain 2.0 (but with with sax) to my ears. ATWIAD is a little slower than PR and the long meandering "talking to god" disrupts the album somewhat. But by and large, it very much sounds like a PR follow up to me.

.

Parade was a much more dramatic change in direction imo.

Yes. I've been saying this for years.

I think what people really were reacting to was how the album starts with the "beatlesesque" title track, but then again, even that weird flute sound can be compared to the warped synth-organ sound "Let's Go Crazy" starts with. The album is structured in the same manner as PR with the songs having similar "functions" on it.

Sure, it is weirder and doesn't rely so much on big synth sounds played on analog synths (there's plenty of Yamaha DX7), but the songwriting and the beats continue in the same vein (hell, you don't think there's a reason why Prince pretty much always plays "Take Me With U" and "Respberry Beret" as a medley live?).

The title track probably is a lot of it. After that, I don't see that musically it's all that different--and since "Around the World in a Day" is mostly David Coleman's track musically, it's probably not something someone should emphasize too much.

I have to agree. Parade is a much more dramatic change.

I got completely confused with the 70's re-release of Sgt Pepper songs as singles.

"When the Beatles' recording contract with EMI expired in 1976, EMI was free to re-release music from The Beatles' catalogue, and in 1978 – 11 years after the original album release – released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"/"With a Little Help from My Friends" as the A-side of a single with "A Day in the Life" as the B-side. The single was released on Capitol in the US on 14 August (closely following the US release of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film), reaching #71 on 30 September 1978 where it stayed for 2 weeks. The single was released on Parlophone in the UK in September."
