Prediction Time: Where will the new albums fall on the Prince scale?

Based on what we've heard and what we know, where do you think the new albums will fall on the scale of Prince albums? I think Art Official Age will be better than MPLSound but not as good (I use that term very, very loosely) as 20ten. It will be in a tier with albums like Planet Earth, NPS, Rave, MPLSound, and 20ten. In other words, the lowest tier.

I don't know what to expect with PlectrumElectrum. I have low expectations, but it seems like it could be at least more musically interesting than AOA.

What's your prediction for the rankings?

You can give some Orgers a lock of Prince's hair and they'll take it to a lab, have its DNA mapped, predict an hairstyle based on the curvature of the strand, and from that predict the video he may have been shooting, then extrapolate to a single and ultimately to a whole album. The final report should then include three alternate track lists fully reviewed and projected chart positions, plus a conclusion it's no Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times but it sounds better than 1999 Remastered but only if you get it on vinyl.

That's one weird fucking prediction. Wow. :)

All I'm saying is, I'm a longtime Orger. Been here since the black and purple days. People always rank albums and make predictions. WHAT SAY YOU?

Orgers are notorious over-thinkers, over-analyzers and over-predictors, so you're perfectly welcome to perpetuate our much documented anal retentive, Asperger-esque, fussy-bossy traditions.

If Prince would try to feed the Org for one meal, he'd have to raid all the fast food joints but 99% would be special orders (a quarter-pound with just the onions, fries with freshly sliced broccoli, poutine with no cheese, tacos with the shell on the side, KFC chicken with the fried skin removed, diet cotton candy, etc.)

What's your prediction, Aerogram? I remember you from way back in the day. You must have some sense of where this album might fall in the rankings. Nobody can expect it to be up at the top with SOTT, Parade, etc. And it might be hard to predict it will be at the absolute bottom. But where do you think it has the best chance of falling between those ends of the spectrum? Speculation is fun. Do you hate fun?

not expecting much but hoping that whats been released so far are the worst tracks. if not, AOA could be a worse 3121. Breakfast is terrible copy of "Come On". Breakdown and Clouds are simply "ok" slow/mid tempo snoozers.

And Plectrum could be a bad Chaos and Disorder. PRETZL and FIXURLIFE are just awfull (and why would Live Out Loud be excluded? Its a nice track!)

For the record, as for as 2000s Prince goes, I think 20Ten and Lotus are the best of the bunch (meaning a fun and non-embarrassing albums, worthy of his name), MPLS, Musicology and PE have their moments, some of them great, 3121 is mainly boring and plastic and TRC is just an evil abomination I would rather forget.

People on the Org have an annoying tendency to claim that people expressing negative opinions about Prince's music are trying to speak for everyone, framing their opinion as fact, etc. Nobody ever lays this charge on people expressing positive opinions. Quit this shit. All opinions are just opinions. Accept the fact that we have a collective range of opinions. That's what makes the Org so great. If we all agreed, this place would be fucking terrible.

Not sales. Sales figures mean next to nothing. Some of Prince's best albums have sold only a fraction of the number of copies of really shitty albums from flash in the pan crap artists. I mean scale in the sense of your own personal ranking of Prince's albums. Each fan likely has his or her own favorites and least favorites among Prince's large catalog.

I hope they are at least as good as The Gold Experience, but I'm expecting something in line with MPLSound and Chaos and Disorder. Ain't no way in hell, they are going to be as much fun as SOTT or many of the Revolution era tracks, just because Prince is so different as a person today.

I am one of Prince's biggest fans but im not gonna lie like a large number of you all are..

Prince better pull off a 60's style Rock God Album with PE.

And he better have something on a level better than 1999 with AOA..

If not,he will be branded with being played out..

He will still provide killer shows but his music is slipping..

I hope and PRAY that I am wrong..I really do..

But I doubt it..

Just based off of what we've heard from those who've previewed the albums.. I would predict:

AOA - better than Musicology, MPLSound, NPS, PE, Rave.. perhaps better than 20Ten (its hard to say but I think it'll come down to what's going on in the opening track and the affirmations)

PE - better than Chaos & Disorder, 3121 all of the above mentioned albums, hopefully on par with Lotus (I personally will probably listen to this one more).

But who knows.. only time will tell.

It seems pointless to predict based on a few tracks, I'm a methodical fun-hating man who tries not to extrapolate too much. wink

I find the Org has been in a speculative frenzy a little longer than usual, but more importantly the odds will always be stacked against any new Prince album vaulting to the upper echelon of the canon. The easiest thing would be to say that both albums will be disappointing and not at all the MASTERPIECES we ordered. Then again I remember Parade being called a disaster and songs like Do U Lie or Venus de Milo being called silly overindulgent stuff.

I think in the end Prince will have an incredible catalog of recordings and melodies that will measure up as a body of work. Will he defy conventional wisdom and deliver two albums that are universally praised and even chart decently? That it the hope, but realistically Prince is more likely to garner "close but no cigar" reviews.

One thing I'm willing to predict is that it won't be called worse than New Power Soul. King Sausage promised to eat his shorts whilst listening to NPS non stop for two days if critics don't agree with him.

(not really, but that's what he should do).

Oops, I didn't realize I was answering the King himself. As you might remember I don't see too well.

In any case, I also have family with Asperger Syndrome and was myself medically investigated for it (I'm not). I actually think the world may need more people with Asperger like Isaac Newton, Glenn Gould and some of my stellar co-workers.

I have not forgotten you and remember you were studying to be a diplomat. Please carry on with your passionate naysaying.

Based on everything I've heard from PLUM so far, I expect it to be on the level of Planet Earth, which as a whole is my least favorite Prince album of all time. The fact that both "Pretzelbodylogic" and "FixUrLifeUp" are two of the cuts that made the album frightens me intensely, because I can't think of any other Prince songs that I've found to be so incredibly dull.

As for AOA, it's hard to say. I listened to "Clouds" a dozen or so times the other day, and liked it...I haven't listened to it since, because I don't want to get burned out on it. It didn't exactly blow me away, but it least there were a few enjoyable aspects and it made me want to hear it again, which is more than I can say for anything that 3rdEyeGirl has put out (except for the "Screwdriver remix," which was fucking fanTAStic). My hope is that I will like AOA as much as "20TEN," which to me is certainly no classic album, but is an enjoyable listen - moreso than MPLS or Musicology or even Lotus Flower, in my mind (the latter is just so DULL).

Guessing: I'll like it better 20Ten and MPLSound but not as much Lotusflower.

.

The mardy arses can't argue with that because it's just a prediction of my opinion, not "it will be better than X and worse than Y", because apparently when you make such comments it means they're set in stone for all eternity.

I have been thinking about this and I honestly think, they will fall between the level of all his post 2000 albums, somewhere between average and very good. None of Musicology onward material has been blow your shoes off amazing, but then again he has not released too many self indulgent quirkfests either lol

.

I personally rate all of the albums in the past 11 years between 65 and 80 on my Prince scale, and this equates to good but not great. Typically each album is polite and well written offering a good diversity of the mature Prince sound in the 9 - 12 tracks. However they all play it safe with lyrics and musical diversity. There's no explicit bombs or over the top preaching as of previously. He just plays it safe. The music is alright, as it Prince music after all.

.

In my overall rankings, they sit in the middle to high area. The best score I gave was 81 to MPLsOUND and 80 to 3121, 77 for 20Ten, 75 for Musicology and 73 for Lotuflow3r and 71 for Planet Earth. Ranking wise out of 39 albums, MPLsOUND is in 12th place and Planet Earth in 18th place.

.

From the songs I have heard, I would say the new albums sound a lot like Lotusflow3r and 20Ten outtakes with a more band like sound. Some fairly good ballads and rockers, but Screwdriver is the only really great rock number with melody and I really like The Breakdown with its screams and the rest is just really a lot of chants. Overall I would say these albums will score around 70 on my scale.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

if these albums fail miserably (or even if they are successful for that matter), then i hope Prince finally stops chasing the youth market and do some more mature music that doesn't feel forced or embarrassing. stop chasing the charts ($$$) and do something for the ART of it, he's a millionaire so should just do music for free (the concerts/back catalog make him the dough). I don't really mnd the chart chasing stuff, but i think he could also do a jazz or trad soul album and release it without too much hype/fuss. Even open the vault up a bit and release some more...

fix ur life up!
