What do you hope to gain?

I hardly ever post, but I have been reading posts on this site for many, many years.

It hardly seems worth it to put my hat in the ring, but I have the time, so I'll do it anyway.

What do you orgers hope to gain by belittling, insulting, and second-guessing everything that Prince does?

Firstly, I'll state the obvious. This is a fan site. I would think that the majority of opinions about the subject of the fansite (in this case Prince) would be positive, or at least well-wishing in nature. If you were just surfing the web looking for info about Prince and came across this site, you might leave thinking Prince is not worth the time of day. So many posts written here are petty and hateful and maliscious towards Prince and/or his work.

It seems to be a general consensus on this site that Prince's "good years" came to an end in the 90s. If so, why come to a fan site for an artist that has been a has-been for 20 years? What does that say about you, following a has-been for so many years? Insulting virtually everything he does or doesn't say or do as though your insults are going to change his behavior? Prince has been sporadically releasing or ultimately deciding not to release albums for as long as he's been an artist. If PlectrumElectrum doesn't get released, so what?! If the "vault" doesn't get released, so what?! Isn't there a 40 year history of Prince recording and not releasing projects? Hasn't Prince announced projects on prior occasions that didn't see the light of day? Hasn't Prince been suing people who use his product without his permission for many, many years? What else is new?

My point being, Prince does what he does. That hasn't changed over the years. I haven't always agreed with his choices, as I'm sure he wouldn't have always agreed with mine. To me, what has intensified a lot over the years is that so many that post here proclaim that his recent music is for various reasons "not good enough" anymore. Constantly belittling his current talent (songwriting, producing, etc.), to me, is pretty low class. Even if it was true that Prince is no longer good at what used to be great talents of his (as if it could ever really be verified), why minimize and insult a person that has given you hours and hours and years and years of great music and showed an unparalled work ethic to make his music the best it could be? Maybe you don't like his new output, but maybe its just not for you. I am sure some people don't like his old output. My point being, there's no problem agreeing to disagree about liking or not liking his new (or old) music, but when not liking turns into a crusade in post after post to prove how Prince is no longer capable of good music is ludicrous.

What do I hope to gain? Hopefully, less "talentless/viscious" posts about Prince because he doesn't release items fast enough or because he didn't record something in the "best" format or because he plays too many catalog songs in concert or because his songs aren't deep enough or he doesn't like dealing with the music industry execs. I would like to do more celebrating about the hundreds of hours of great music by Prince that is already available to us. If more becomes available, great. If not, it has been a great ride.

What do you hope to gain?

I agree with you Pdiddy but people are allowed there opinion on Prince even if they are current or former fans or none fans. But yes some of what is said about him on here i would sometimes call this a hate site and that is my opinion to. Sad but true, how many artists like Elvis , James Brown, MJ , Jimi Hendrix and other legends like Prince do there own fans talk so bad about them. Maybe because Prince in the day was so freaking good they just wished he was the same today. I respect him now as i did when he started in 1978. To me he will always be the best . lol

I'm gonna get flamed for saying that but the main problem with people talking about prince, just as well as when they talk about virtually everything else from Israel and Palestine to genetic manipulations, is that they believe that they're entitled to an opinion when a good 75% of them aren't, really lol lol lol

you're absolutely right, here are too many who take themselves too seriously!

I have no problem with that if one criticizes his music, because he has taken so many music styles &

not everyone likes the change in his music style... I also belong to those who do not like everything... but here there are some who just pretend they knew what would be best for Prince. Nobody here can speak from the perspective of Prince, no one has a 30 + career in the music business... for me it makes no sense to follow someone who has produced the last 20 + years only garbage (according to their statement ). From some critics here, its unnecessary to read the content of their post because you know in advance that it's all about bashing... it says a lot about someone who spends years to deal with things (Prince / Music) he does not like.

there is nothing to say against constructive criticism, (unlike other fansiten of other artists) the org is so interesting because this site is not only surrounded by fanatics who celebrate any record release as a masterpiece.

In the case of Plectrum Electrum, it's not just some project Prince did, mentioned one time and filed away. Prince has been repeatedly hyping the album for like a year and a half. Where's Plectrum Electrum?... It's also frustrating for some fans that there are great songs sitting in the vault (some of which is no doubt, undocumented), and Prince has a pattern of releasing lesser material instead.

.

Prince seems to lack focus these days. He's hyping the 3rdEyeGirl project, then he starts pushing solo Prince material (Breakfast Can Wait), he tours with 3rdEyeGirl, then he switches to doing some vegas NPG type show. He released The Breakdown. Lately he's back to promoting 3rdEyeGirl....

.

Prince is pretty much coasting, spinning his wheels. He has the ability to do great work, that's still in him. Take his performance on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at RnR Hall of Fame... having watched that footage countless times, it still resonates. People who weren't even fans of Prince watch that video and are blown away.

.

Maybe some fans hope to somehow challenge Prince and inspire him to further push boundaries with his work.

[/quoteWe talk a little more. About how Sam always called Dick Clark by his first name, a revolutionary act back in those early Civil Rights days. How the former Cassius Clay use to act like a little boy around Sam ("He loved him"). How L.C. was on American Bandstand, January 1, 1960. And how he met James Brown, the very day Brown cut "Please, Please, Please."
-///- Nothing anyone has to say on this board will change anything. It is obvious that he is trying to get the project out with a major label if he can find no takers for the project so be it. It is not like he is the first black guy who could not get a rock project off the ground.

i was just thinkin about this today.personally i'm feelin positive about everything, and actually prince has been steadily releasing new songs.one thing may be that there are a lot of young people here who have yet to learn the consequences of talking stuff about others. i would guess that the majority of us discover prince in our teenage years, and if this forum had existed when i was 13, my posts would have been much less mature than they are now (yikes)also prince is kinda like a deep mirror. when i've wondered about something he did, i'd further wonder and realize that if i changed the corresponding thing in my own life, then that would resolve my issue much better.

I think alot of the negativity that you speak of,is simply because alot of fans are frustrated and bored. There's been no recent updates on the Purple Rain remaster...no news on the Plectum Electum release date,no word on the release date for Prince's own solo album.Things have been waaay too quiet lately.Prince needs to talk to the fans more...give us an update,a release date.....anything to keep fans happy and excited!

The org does positive up when something new is released. And if that something new is actually good, it does start to resemble a fan site. But by and large, it is Prince's own doing really. Its not just the lack of quality in the music. In a way, that is to be expected after so many decades in the business. But it is more about the utter stupidity that sometimes comes out of the Prince camp. Suing fans, shutting down (other) fan sites, removing all content from sites like YouTube, poor poor marketing decisions, broken promises, expensive websites that take our money and give nothing back ($77 for a t'shirt borders on extortion), lifetime mebership to sites that last a couple of years. Basically, it is saddening to see someone we have admired for many many years lose the plot on so many occasions when it could so easily be avoided.
.
At the end of the day, it is us, his fans, that put him where he is. It is our hard earned money that bought his music and paid for the tickets to see him live. Sometimes it isnt too much to ask that we be allowed to collect, cherish and occasionally idolise our musical hero by having a choice of fan sites to visit, watch a few clips of nostalgic moments on YouTube, get our money's worth when paying to join an official site, occasionally getting an album that has been hyped by Prince himself for nearly 2 years.
.
Youre right, other artists probably dont get as much grief from their fans as Prince does. But then they are not doing a lot of the stupid, childish and ostracizing things Prince does.
.
When Prince does good, he gets plenty of love on the org. When he acts like an idiot, he gets called on it. Unfotunately, he acts like an idiot all too frequently.

Certainly releasing a classic album every year of his career set up a precedent for both quality and pace by expecting fans. The last 5 years have been particularly tough.

What do you hope to gain?

I doubt ANYBODY woke up one day, and said..."I'd like to make a few million today, so I'm going to post something on prince.org so I can get some money." I also doubt somebody lacking self-esteem suddenly left their shrink's office mid-sentence, walking out quickly telling their therapist: "Uh, great advice doc, I'm going to fill this void in my life by making a post on prince.org."

SO I don't think anybody thought they were going to "gain" anything.

It's a stinking website. You have people posting overly positive Pro-Prince Propaganda,

you have people who hate every single thing Prince has ever done but love to post here,

and you have everything in-between.

I like to post my Opinions...some are positive, some are negative, some are neither, but I don't have fear in my heart to tell the truth, and I am not afraid to be inconsistent. Some things he does I will love, some I will hate, some I will just like or dislike.

Sometimes the only thing worse than the complainers, are the people complaining about the complainers...
