The Line #1 Vs. The Line #2

So now that the second version has been floating around for some time, which one do u prefer?

#1 will always be my favorite, it's very intimate, I had a long love affait with that track back when the good sounding version leaked in the late 90's, it speaks to me a lot, particularly the line "can u be my lover and still be my friend?".

I love #2 a lot too, though, it would have been the right one for Lovesexy while #1 would have been better as a b-side, I like the way it sounds like they tried to put as many things into it as possible, and suddenly this very intimate song about a lonely soul becomes this great, overcrowded party church gospel.

So in the end I like both but #1 is my baby.

I find it quite fascinating, though, how much a similar song, based on the same original recording, has been turned into 2 tracks that convey such a different mood. This capacity to make virtually 2 songs with one, to create 2 atmospheres that different with a single song, is great proof of prince's versatility and talent!

Opinions?

I don't know. I only have one version and it fits both of your descriptions. Like a dry b-side and like a church gathering. Anyway, I love the one I have. 7 mins, 31 seconds.
What?

U must have the first one. #2 has horns, if urs doesn't it's #1 (from memory the lenght also fits, #2 being slightly longer)

whatever reason, this outtake, The Line #2 the finished version (which really should have been on the album) is my favorite song he put through the Lovesexy ringer of spastic production. I think it really works here better than any of the actual tracks on the album.

By "Lovesexy ringer", I'm talking about the manner in which he had assembled Lovesexy, then added all the crazy addtional production on top of many of the song cores to form the final released sound of the album.

With "The Line" we see the process. We see the before/after. I wish we could have the barebones versions of other tracks from the album. Remember, wasn't it DrFink who said he really thought the album was incredible, until he heard the finished one with all the production added?

But personally I do like The Line as it was finished quite a bit. More than the original. But I bet I would like the other songs that probably went throught the same transformation (Eye No, Alphabet St, Lovesexy, Glam Slam) more in their original form.

the sound of the Line is very the Future, probably both made around the same time. I wonder are there any other songs (outtakes) with that feel

#2. it's better than most of the tracks on the album. #1 kind of annoys me. the sound of it is one kind of track, but wants to be #2.

"The Line", to me, benefits from the "kitchen sink" Lovesexy approach. I always felt that version 1 was "too" empty.

Keep your headphones on.

Adorecream

I love it completely especially the call and response vocals and Boni's vocals and these lines

.

Is it the shake and bake? - No!

Is it the earthquake? - No!

Is it the ricearoni? - No!

It is the macaroni? - No!

Boni! on the two what u gonna do?

Kangaroo, say what, Kangaroo!

.

Classic Prince nonsense lyrics. with some fine dance gospel and melisma.

Which is ironic because I think the whole Lovesexy album suffers from overly clittered production. But it works on this song, like it does on the title track and "Eye No". The rest of it sounds too bogged down in bells and whistles.

Great insight above.

Line #2 is the jam! I really like the layers he put on it. The last 4 minutes or so has my favorite percussion by Sheila that I've ever heard. The whole song is just so joyous. It's a wonderful showcase of Bonnie Boyer. I also like that he removed his response lines to Bonnie toward the end of the first verse -- those always sounded strange to me.

The simple Line #1 does have a very lonely feel to it. It has an awkward, weird sound. I like it until it gets to the kangaroo dance. That part really doesn't work without the surrounding uplifting sounds that he added to #2.

This is one of my favorites also...it speaks of Prince's genius....I have three versions of this song. I love how it is speeded up and then slowed down. He was talking about someone special to him...lover and friend...
