So, what does Prince think of Bruno Mars?

Over the past several years, we've heard Prince complain about how there's too many artists that don't play real music (i.e. "real music by real musicians). Like him or not, the Superbowl performance that Bruno did was pretty bad ass and showcased how multi-talented he is. Why haven't we heard Prince comment about Bruno, made any surprise appearances, etc? Isn't this what Prince wanted? Bruno performs with a decent-sized band and seems to be what Prince said the industry needed more of. So, why is the Purple One so mum on Bruno? Thoughts?

I hate to say it but it could be a bit of jealousy. Unless you're living under a rock you know who Bruno Mars is. And before people jump on me and ask why would someone like Prince be jealous of Bruno Mars. Well...he's younger, relevent, writes and sings his own material for himself and others (like Prince used to), etc. It's not that Prince is throwing shade, he's just not acknowledging. Why should he? He's Prince.

Plus Prince is not into "guys". Would he work with Bruno Mars' fine ass sisters though? Hell yeah! razz

It's interesting that you bring up jealousy because I remember after the Super Bowl halftime show ended, I wrote something on the Org about now I understood why Prince made a guest appearance on the New Girl that aired immediately after the game lol Well, Prince has worked with Cee-Lo Green before, but that was just as an opening act type of thing. He's worked with Common and others.

So, I am wondering if a lot of you agree that Prince might be jealousy of Bruno?

Why is this in Prince: Music & More forum? It's not like anyone here has the least inkling what Prince thinks about anything, much less his specific thoughts about Bruno Mars. It's time to make a Bruno sticky in the Music: Non Prince forum where the Bruno fanatics can post all about Bruno, Bruno, Bruno to their heart's content and leave everyone else alone.

The reason why this is in the Prince thread is because it's a discussion about Prince's thoughts, actions, etc. about a particular artist. This isn't a discussion about Bruno, it's a discussion about Prince's THOUGHTS about Bruno. Thanks and hopefully this thread will stay right here since we are talking about Prince afterall lol

By the way, the Mayte underwear thread hasn't been moved---probably because it's a discussion about Prince's alleged underwear and not Mayte's underwear.

Bruno Mars is just about everything P used to be. EVERYTHING. The man plays instruments, has a live band, makes hits and writes hits for others, he even can dance and do the James Brown splits, he has hits in a variety of genres as well. P is still trying to prove that he is still the best and maybe acknowledging Bruno would attract more people to Bruno than him. Its all just a little common sense friendly competition. P isnt ready to pass the torch just yet.

Good points. I remember a few years ago, the only reason I knew anything about Esperanza or Janelle was because of Prince. So, I'm guessing he heard about Bruno before he blew up to superstardom. Yes, there's this theory that Prince doesn't work with other men but we know that's not completely true.

EyeHateU, what do you think about the jealousy theory that's popped up? smile

But could Bruno Mars make songs as truly magical as Lovesexy, All My Dreams, The Question Of U, Elephants and Flowers, Play in The Sunshine, Boom, 3121, Future soul Song.

I heard his albums and while they are ok I just found them a bit bland.

Not at all. Im not saying Bruno is better than P. Prince could run circles around Bruno but Bruno is fresh new talent that is doing almost everything P did/does. P may feel like he has something to prove to show the world that he IS still making hits and is so good that he can still stay relevant and that he still reigns supreme.

I dont think P is jealous. I just think he sees a talent that is the spitting image of what he used to be/is and he wants to show that he is still in the game and still reigns supreme.

Bruno Mars is definitely talented, but he has ALOT more people involved making his music than Prince does/did. He doesn't write/play/produce the bulk of his stuff without some kind of help. He is more like MJ in that regard.

---

Search Wikipedia: Unorthodox Jukebox. Then notice the army of people involved in making Bruno's hit record.

--

Also, Bruno is nearly 30. Compare his career now to what Prince had done in the same amount of time. Bruno hasn't nearly had the impact that Prince did at the same point in his career. So let's revisit this silliness in 20 to 30 years.

--

Again, I like Bruno a lot. I bought his albums. However, he hasn't really innovated anything or broken new ground like Prince has. He's basically reheating up old soul revue style concerts (without really even putting a new spin on it) and serving leftovers to a (kinda unnappreciative) audience.

He's still got a long way to go but I think he has a lot up his sleeve. He's got to make the record label happy by putting out catchy pop tunes, however, homeboy has a lot of amazing stuff that doesn't get radio airplay. He's got the chops and sex appeal for R&B music, so I think he will branch out and away from pop. Will he make a song like 17 Days? Well, no one but Prince can do that but the best is yet to come with Bruno I think.

Now thats a facial expression I would like to see. Its one of those moments where you wanna know whats going on in Prince's mind. He probably had a blank expresion on his face but in his mind he was probably at least slightly impressed.

Yeah he could have at least sent Bruno a tweet giving him props about "real music by real musicians"....It's like damn Prince, you got what you been complaining about, give Bruno a shout out or collaboration or something, geez. It won't change Prince's legacy at all to kick it with Bruno for a bit! lol

I like Bruno Mars, but he's a gifted musician adept at reproducing classic sounds. He did not innovate musically at all or create a sound that defined much of a decade. When Prince does a JB vibe, it's a new take on it (Housequake), not just a good example of JB's influence. Also Bruno does not have Prince stylistic reach.

Bruno Mars is gifted, Prince is a true genius. I think Bruno Mars would agree with that.

Olus his lyrics are pretty bad. Maybe good compared to the crap that is on the radio today, but pretty mediocre in the grand scheme of things.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!! This is some funny stuff here. Let's make a quick comparison to their career timeline. Bruno Mars is 29 in less than 60 days. Now I KNOW Prince at 29 had only done a few things...not that much. Just 10 albums, a hit movie, maybe a paltry 50 or so songs given to other artists, nothing compared to what Bruno at 29 has accomplished....

2 complete albums..and a few other songs here and there. Boy, Prince should be jealous!

Honestly, Bruno is talented, and deserves his success, but he stands alone in what he does now...very few out there like him. In the 80's, he'd probably be very famous, but he'd be way below the level that Prince, MJ, and even Lionel Richie were at.

I don't think the intention of this thread is to say Bruno is better than Prince, it's just asking what you all think that Prince thinks of Bruno. So, that's the reason why I posted this. We have heard a lot about Prince wanting to have a return to the days of real music being played with instruments, etc. So, here's a young cat (Bruno) that is probably the closest thing to it at the moment, so why isn't Prince giving Bruno the Esperanza/Janelle treatment? smile That's how the jealousy theme surfaced...

Well, it's interesting because it seems that some people would say that to compare an album like Dirty Mind UTCM would be like apples and oranges. Nobody is saying Bruno is better than Prince and we still have to keep in mind that Bruno is releasing what the label wants him to release. Somehow, Prince from the start of his career was able to retain almost complete control of everything he was doing, which was unheard of then and especially unheard of now.
