Best & worst cases scenarios for remasters with extra songs

Yesterday I had a terrible thought about what might go wrong with remasters (see below). Today I'm balancing it with a best case scenario. So, if Prince & WB do get their acts together and release remasters with bonus tracks, what do you fear and hope for most?

Worst case
Remasters are released with "bonus" tracks which are strictly the already released b-sides from that era. After the Lotusflow3r website debacle of the old video footage simply being already released videos, there's a chance that whatever "new" material they put on the CDs isn't new at all, which would be a huge shame.

Best case
Each remamaster includes my three favorite unreleased songs from that time in crystal clear quality and five songs that are currently uncirculating and therefore completely new to my ears. Now that would be freaking awesome. It's like a whole new album that has 3 songs already out as singles.

The saddest part about this conversation is that we would all probably feel different if Prince wasn't so drenched in the religion & control freak bullshit. I believe that's what we all fear....him editing shit, & not delivering the outtakes we all want to hear. My expectations @ this point are so low, a bug couldn't crawl under it. neutral

Since April and the news about the Deal between Prince and Warner. ...not a single detail has emerged about the reissues!

This is really not a good indication about what to expect!

Worst Case:

The only album to be remastered is PR and it is done in such a way as to compete in the loudness wars of today. The songs are altered to conform to Prince's ridiculous, talent sapping, career destroying ideology. The 2nd and only other disc contains 12 inches and extended versions of the songs on the album. Nothing else is ever to be released as a remaster because Prince and WB are once again at war.

.

Best Case:

At minimum the 4 albums in need of remastering are done in such a way as to be faithful to the music: 1999, PR, SOTT and Lovesexy. No loudness wars, no additional over dubs and no alterations to lyrics. Each album has additional outakes from the relevant era with several genuinely never heard songs. SOTT includes all of the outakes from Dream Factory and Crystal Ball, and Lovesexy includes a remaster of the Black Album. Each remaster includes a DVD/Bluray of a previously unseen concert relevant to the era.

.

Probable Case:

No remasters. P and WB fall out (again). New P album released with another label, turns out to be crap. PE gets locked up in the vault. P goes on tour and performs the hits. P blames the world for his lack of success. Business as usual.

I think my worst case is that he just includes some "Reboots" of the tracks we already know as bonus material for some tracks on each album, for example, the Let's go Crazy he's been performing, Something in the water etc...

.

.

As already mentioned with his current view on things with his Religion and tracks he wont perfom anymore its totally unpredicatable what bonus material he could/would potentially use. He wouldnt be able to mess with the original album tracks but he would have control over what he includes, thats the scary thought lol

It was only Purple Rain to be reissued as part of the deal, Prince is getting his tapes back allowing him to re issue as he wanted. Who says he will. I don't think he will.

In the end the main reason I want this remaster out ASAP is so I can quit reading people's speculations about it. This is what the Org does to you lol lol lol

er

Best:
Purple Rain CD + LP
PR film DVD + deleted scenes etc
Live in Syracuse DVD
CD with b-sides and extended versions
CD with previously unreleased stuff
All of this in an LP-sized box with poster

Worst:
Purple Rain CD with the new album being the bonus disc!

And when it does come, we can read what people think of it and, quite likely, what they think is wrong with it. And we'll have threads like: "What the remaster should have been". And like you, I can't resist joining in. wink

I Agree, they would have known that November would be the target for release for it, from a business prospective, It would have made more sense keeping the deal under wraps until Sept/Oct making a big announcement followed by a Pre-order and marketing campaign, I think it's probably lost alotof momentum now with the majority of people who are interested.

i believe what was originally said from WB or Prince's camp was that the original Purple Rain album would be remastered with bonus material. and oct/nov would be the release date.

now.. if we get the remastered album with a few bonus tracks in november then no one can be mad at them as they would of come thru on their original 'promise'. Pr would be remastered for P's legacy and he would also get his master(s) back.

now the dream would be an expansive box set lavishing never before heard treasures upon his fans (+ full length Computer Blue!)

I think we are already in the worst case scenario. No album, no tracklist, no release date. Best case scenario would have been The Time's Ice Cream Castles and Appolonia 6 remastered with outtakes included as a package with Purple Rain and it's outtakes.

Worst Case:

  • The albums will be remastered 'brick wall' style, and all non-JW friendly lyrics will be removed or changed
  • There will be no bonus tracks (not even 12"s and B-sides)
  • The album covers will feature a 1/2" purple border going all the way around that reads, PRINCE: THE PURPLE RAIN 30th ANNIVERSARY REMASTER SERIES in big, white, block letters. This border will clash horribly with the album art, and make it even smaller.
  • All song/album titles that can be converted to Prince-bonics will be converted to Prince-bonics.

Best Case:

  • The albums will be remastered sensitively and intelligently, by capable people who know the work.
  • Like the recent Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds remasters, each album will come with not a bonus cd, but a bonus dvd: this dvd will contain all the 12"s, single edits and b-sides, all the official videos from that era, and whichever unreleased tracks are chosen to be included (all rippable to iTunes). Additionally, the dvd contains a short (20 mins?) documentary featuring interviews with people relevant to the album.

Seriously, those Nick Cave remasters (minus the unnecessary 5.1 remixes) are a blueprint of how to do this right!

Best case: they make a vinyl limited edition of 100 copies, Prince will have personally ejaculated on each copy's booklet.

Worst case: no sperm on the booklet.

I just hope that the "bonus tracks" are not 12" versions or B-sides that we already have. It's OK to include those, but I also wanna see some previously unreleased material, too.

I want stuff like "G-Spot","Electric Intercourse" and of course, that legendary, long version of "Computer Blue".

I'm convinced this will be the case. Honestly, I'd rather listen to the old masters than have it mastered so loud that all the frequencies are squashed and distorted.

Sonically, Purple Rain sounds better to me than say Planet Earth or Musicology, etc...

That said, hope there are tons of extra tracks as that is what I'll be buying for.

Best case scenario:

Purple Rain remastered in pristine quality, uncensored

One bonus disc of extended B-sides and unreleased songs - also pristine quality

Prince And The Revolution LIVE! included on Blu-Ray

Worst case scenario:

Purple Rain remastered in loudness wars style

Censored to remove or heavily edit Darling Nikki (side note: I don't see why it would be necessary, there's not even swearing in the song)

No bonus material

Packaging: I would love to see this released similar the the mini-LPs (I believe from Japan) from several years back. Include all of the original inserts.

Best case--I have no idea, since the best case would involve newly available material, at least some of which I've never heard in any form.

Worst case--he changes the backwards bits. Darling Nikki's coda is played backwards/forwards (whatever). That's annoying, but at least you can tell what he's done. The real problem is a very slight change in the one in Baby I'm a Star. He edits it so it becomes "what the duck do they know"... and although you wouldn't expect it, that change somehow makes the track universally unlistenable, BUT no one ever figures out what's different. People argue for the next five ye.ars on the .org, everybody saying something else is different, than everyone else saying (in bigger and bigger and more colorful letters) that "no, THIS is what's different." Eventually, the fallout from the edit results in the end of Prince fandom as we know it, and everything deteriorates to an unending echo of argumentation about the "Baby, I'm a Star (2014 or 2015 or whenever re-master)."

.

Oh, and all of this happens in spite of the fact that otherwise the remaster sounds fantastic, and the collection actually includes the two tracks without the edits (Prince just says he'd prefer you listen to the clean version, but he knows that history should be respected), there's a disc full of the released remixes and some unreleased remixes, 2 discs of completely unreleased (and fantastic) songs, two complete concert videos and 2 other complete concert audios (all four incredible), 3 different style t-shirts, a coffee mug, with full-size artwork and the original poster (rolled not folded)

.

ALL FOR $25!!!!!

Best scenario for Purple Rain

.

Option 1 - Budget Remaster

2CD set, CD1 Original Album remastered with a rich sound that picks up instruments and a clear vocal sound

CD2 - Outtakes, Protege and Bsides music

1. Electric Intercourse

2. Possessed

3. Wednesday

4. Fathers Song

5. Climax

6. A case of u

7. Computer Blue 15 minute mix

8. Jungle Love - The Time

9. The Bird - The Time

10. Modernaire - Dez Dickerson and the Modernaires

11. Sex Shooter - Apollonia 6

12. 17 Days

13. Erotic city, make love not war erotic city come alive

14. God

15. Another Lonely Christmas

16. She's always in my hair (Bside to Raspberry beret, but recorded December 1983)

Case with 32 - 64 page illustrated booklet about the making, history and Impact of the movie and music. Illustrated and with essays by important people - William Blinn, Albert Magnoli, Eric Leeds etc.

.

Option 2 - Experience the Rain - Deluxe set

As above for Option 1 Plus

-A2 (420 x 580mm (16.5 x 23inches) copy of Purple Rain movie poster (Framable)

-2 DVD set of Purple Rain Movie and Making, Documentaries, Music videos etc as 2004 20th anniversary set.

-Original Vinyl album of Purple Rain

-Whole CD albums of Ice Cream Castles, Apollonia 6 and The Modernaires (Could include Glamorous life too if you like)

-128 page book about Purple Rain, making, stars, impact, history etc

-7 x 10 glossy photos of Prince, Morris, Apollonia, Jerome, The Revolution, The Time, Olga Karlatos, Clarence Williams III (All facsimile signed)

-Limited numbered edition of 750 in large Holographically designed box called "Experience the Rain - Ultimate Collection"

Coupon for free t shirt of Purple Rain cover (So purchasers can select size, its intelligent, when if the set was pre packaged with the shirt, it only had a medium and the buyer was 3XL, they would not buy the set based on that decision, but with a coupon they could choose right sixe from XS to 7XL).

- Purple Rain cap

- Mini guitar copy (11 inches high) of Purple Rain ear cloud guitar and his Telecaster guitar played at start.

- DVD's of 1st Avenue 3 August 1983 and Syracuse 1985 - called before and after the rain

- Facsimile concert posters and concert tickets

.

Now that would be cool!

.

I would like to stress, that Tshirt distribution would be handled by Warner Brothers and not Prince or any company web or otherwise associated with or managed in anyway by Prince. lol

More worst scenarios:

.

1. All WB Prince albums are instantly taken off sale and rereleased 1 a year remastered, so we get For You, this year and Prince next year, up to Chaos and Disorder in 2032. When they come back, they are full priced and have poor remastering and nothing else, no cover notes, bonus tracks or anything.

.

2. All Prince albums are ordered by WB, to have a sticker placed on the cover saying "Top albums at a nice price, get all of your WB classics at a great price" - and do nothing else, they merely sticker all stock they have. Yet the discount turns out to be trivial or non existent (All the record stores have generally have all the classic albums under $10 each now).

.

Best Scenarios:

.

4U, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy - all issued remastered, with a few extra trax thrown in and copious notes.

.

1999 - Remastered and notes added, also unreleased trax on a CD - Xtralovable (1982 version, not hideous 2011 version), Moonbeam Levels, Lust u always, 2nd coming, Turn it up, Strange way of saying I love U, Purple Music, Dance to the beat and Baby Your a Trip (Prince 1982 Studio version). Also the Bsides How come u don't call me anymore and Horny Toad.

.

Purple Rain - discussed in former post

.

ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, The Black Album and Lovesexy - all have basic packages, with remastered album, bsides, unreleased trax and a deluxe version with a live concert DVD/CD thrown in from appropriate tour.

.

. Batman - Because of copyrights- can't touch it.

.

. Crystal Ball - 5cd extravaganza of all Dream Factory/Crystal Ball (Dec 1985 - Feb 1987) tracks including Camille songs, SOTT earlier songs like Strange Relationship full of sitar, explanatory book and remastered surround sound for the full experience, the full version of Adonis and Bathsheba as well.

.

GB, D&P, Lovesymbol - Can't do much more except remaster albums (All have fairly good sound anyway) - Bsides and dance mixes too I guess, maybe a Tour CD/DVD - GB = Nude Tour, D and P = 1992 World Tour, Symbol = Act I

.

Come, TGE, - as above, some mixes of earlier versions of songs and unreleased - Poem, Days of Wild etc, maybe issue these two albums as one package, remastering not that necessary.

.

Chaos and Disorder/The Vault - Already contract filler collections, leave as they are, maybe reissue them so they are available to die hard fans.

.

The Hits/Bsides, Ultimate, Very Best of - reissue with remastered versions of songs

.

Remastering means sound enhancement, not overdubbing or changing lyrics, leave the music as it is, merely enhance the sound biggrin

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Just like editing or removing Darling Nikki isn't possible.
