Hmmm, my thoughts on covers versions are mixed - for instance Betcha By Goly Wow is very close to the original, but then what's the point of doing a cover unless it's very different (adds another dimension) - Crimson and Clover does a good job. But with this song - the Al Green version would be almost impossible to top, so i doubt Prince would even attmept it - maybe live only?

i suppose its about the 'way' its played that makes it interesting - i can listen to 30 minute live jams from '87-88 prince, because there is something that appeals to me about the sonic sounds - the individual players? the energy levels? it's not particularily the song itself - it could be princes' take on Sex machine or red house, its the vibe he brought to it, that does it for me - Motherless Child is a good cover from 'fairly' recent. he can still do it occassionally if it's not to overworked or near to the original.
