Was Prince involved with Grace Jones' 'Pull Up To The Bumper'?

I was listening to this track whilst jogging the other day, and thought it was very Princey. Even has a distorted Princey scream at the start of it. Anyone know?..

The track was actually released as an instrumental ("Peanut Butter" by Compass Point All Stars) before Grace got a hold of it. One of the funkiest jams ever.

Yeah it's a great track and the remastered Nightclubbing album that was released recently sounds amazing. Funnily enough Wendy and Lisa were involved in the track William's Blood from grace's most recent album, Hurricane.

What funny about that? Williams Blood has nothing to do with PUTTB and PUTTB has nothing to do with Prince, i don't get it.

I think they were just noting the six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing about W&L working with both Prince and Grace Jones.

.

Well, kind of. Here's the real story:

.

The instrumentation for this song was originally recorded by producers Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare during the sessions for Grace Jones' 1980 album Warm Leatherette in the Bahamas. However it wasn't used as it was the only R&B sounding tune and Island Records supremo Chris Blackwell didn't like it much. Instead it came out as an instrumental B-side (as "Peanut Butter") to Junior Tucker's 1981 single, "The Kick (Rock On)." Sly Dunbar recalled to Mojo magazine December 2008 what happened next: "Grace heard Steven (Stanley) playing the rhythm track one day in the studio, and she said, 'a my riddim that!' And she started crying, 'I want back me riddim! Make we call Chris and tell him say me want me riddim.' So they gave her back the track and she and this girl Dana Mano came up with the lyrics."

On a side note I don't even see how anyone could imagine prince was involved in this song! It's soooo unprincey: he would never have come up with such a beat or bassline or guitar riff particularly in 1981, only the synth sound a bit princey but not quite so, he'd never play them that way either, it's only the typical early 80's synth sound. Every once in a while someone pops up here and say "that song sounds like prince" and everytime I'm like WTF? eek Last one was some Robin Thicke song that sounded nothing like prince. I'm puzzled, really eek

Strangely enough on the following album, Living My Life (I'm listening to it as I write), Nipple To The Bottle has a drums beat that sounds a lot like the beat on Vicki Waiting lol lol lol

She is from Jamaica, so are Sly & Robbie. Seems perfectly logical they speak their local patois when communicating.

Especially considering it takes like a couple of seconds to google it. Sheesh, back in the day you had to look for stories like these in books or magazines, nowadays most of the time you can find shit like this easily. Hell, threads like this should be directed to a hidden subforum called "I'm too lazy to google shit" and just disappear.

.

The utter laziness of so many fans... Just look at the subject titles of threads: "Crucial". Turns out that is someone wondering about a particular line in the lyrics. SO FRIKKING PUT THAT IN THE SUBJECT. Another one: "question about tours". Sheesh, that's not being succinct, that's just being frikking lazy. Threads like that should be directed towards a subforum called "I'm too lazy to think five seconds about a thread title" and only after they have provided a proper title the thread should be readmitted to the original forum. Also: people whose threads repeatedly end up there should get their threadstarting capabilities taken away.

Makes sense. Missa had no idea of the possible existence of a Jamaican Creole but obviously missa could have thought better because why wouldn't there be one?

Yeah this beats me too, the Google laziness. Also it seems many people still don't know Princevault exists because so many questions can b answered with a link to the Princevault page.

.

About the thread titles and stuff I don't think it's laziness as much as ignorance. Being a language teacher and before that having been a communication/events/tour/publishing/whatever-related-to-arts manager I've noticed that language skills that seem totally obvious for some of us aren't that obvious for many people at least when it comes to writing. People will try to make a point and forget to mention the main idea of the point but because they know it they think we do too. People will answer a question about something involving 2 men by saying "he" all the time without even realizing that the reader has no idea which one of the 2 men "he" is. You will ask them a very simple question like "what's the price of milk at Walmart" and they'll answer "Walmart is out of milk at the moment" without realizing that it's not what u're asking them. You will clearly ask them to list 5 specific things we need to know for, say, preparing an event, and they will list only 3 of them despite knowing all 5 and your original email clearly stating that u needed the 5 so u have to send another mail to ask again. Etc.

.

For long I thought either those people r plain stupid or they really don't give a fuck and I was mad, but being a teacher allowed me to realize that it's not that, they have no clue, they genuinely don't realize that they're saying things that only they understand, that make no sense or don't answer what was asked from them. So I'm like, OK, let's just b nice and try and explain what's wrong in a gentle manner. If u get angry people get angry too, they don't understand why u're mad at them, they think u're being judgmental and that there's no problem with their way of writing in the first place. But yeah I know how irritating it is and I still lose my temper on this forum every once in a while, but I try not to.

I see where you're coming from, Bart--but if people didn't ask questions like this one, then other people wouldn't be able to share the information (beyond the "NO!") that often gets shared during the discussions prompted by the easily-answered original question. The "real story" behind the recording that you gave, for example, is something I probably would have never come across on my own--someone else might find out about Grace Jones in general from a question like this. More comes from asking the question here than would come from the person googling it himself, and other people can also learn (beyond, again, the initial question). It starts a conversation that goes beyond the initial question--or that can go beyond it, even if it doesn't always.

I ignored this thread for a month--I was pretty sure there was nothing to the idea--and just decided (for some reason) to open it today. I learned a little bit (even though the premise was faulty). That's a good thing.
