Prince, Warner Bros and Artist Development

If you've seen any of the shows on the current "Hit and Run Part II" tour in the UK, as I have, you'll have noticed a new girl in the camp - singer and dancer Marissa Jack. This is her:

She has been singing on songs such as "U Got The Look", "Take Me With U" and "Paisley Park" at various shows.

At the second of the two Birmingham shows I attended, she was on stage dancing for almost the entire show. She sings well, dances well, and she's cute as hell. She fitted in really well with Prince and 3rd Eye Girl.

Now, here's the interesting part - Marissa's been signed to Warner Bros since 2011. She was signed to Warners personally by Warners head Robert Cavallo, the son of Prince's former manager Bob Cavallo.

So it would seem that Prince's renewed relationship with Warners also has him assisting with artist development. It would seem that Warners weren't really sure what to do with Marissa after signing her, so they've now attached her to the purple wagon - which I think is a great move! It makes a lot of sense, and I hope that Prince produces some new material for her.

I'm really pleased that it looks like he's doing artist development, with a huge platform like Warners behind him again. It bodes really well, IMO.

Can we all say Tay-Mar, Bree Uh Valentino, and Andrew Aloe all together now?

If she lasts more than 1 album it will be a miracle.

What's with the namecalling? Tamar and Andy Allo's albums were absolutely fantastic, and Bria's was a bit patchy but had a few excellent songs. Plenty of great music came from Prince's work with Tamar, Bria and Andy.

Anyway, the obvious difference is that Marissa isn't Prince's artist, she's Warner's artist, who they've called on him to provide some assistance with.

I felt she was painfully average at both Manchester shows. I feel sharing the stage with Prince should be reserved for only the absolute best musicians (the NPG used for the Musicology and 21 nights are the sort of thing i'm talking about) instead of people like Andy Allo and this Marissa Jack. Although, he does have a track record of taking female, bare minimum talent under his wing

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

It also makes me wonder if the "Paisley Park Records" imprint may return for a joint venture such as this (as opposed to wholly-owned Prince projects from NPG Records). Maybe it was a sly hint of sorts for Prince to feature her on "Paisley Park", a track he rarely plays live.

You've gone from someone doing back-up at a couple of gigs in nowheresville, England to the reinvention of the whole Paisley Park label. Oh how the mind works.

.

Assisting in artist development? He's just putting her on as a backup artist. It's no different than included a labelmate or an associate's artists as an opening band. It's not really development thus far. It's an interesting connection to point out though.

Agree. The results are good. Tamar, Andy Allo, Bria albums I like. Hopefully with WB backing he can push them more into the spotlight. We know how it works.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Give her a silver dress and cane, let her share your stage and sofa, and call it 'artist development'.

I like to think that it's his cane and he's told her to sit on a couch for two hours and hold it for him lol

I'd like to think WB placed her in Prince's life to shake him out of his LOW T coma.

Low testosterone. I was watching a copy of Vanity 6 at the Minnesota Music Awards back in the day and thought Prince needs another Susan.

What makes you think he has low testosterone? lol lol Are you serious, or being facetious? I would think you'd have to see a blood test report to know that.

All this anti-sex stuff started when Prince reached a certain age. He needs something to get him going again. Vanity 6 had THREE beuatiful women at the same time. Now that's what's up!! LowT that's the entirety of his problem. It's like that Snickers commercial "You're not you when you're hungry". Except with Prince it's "You're not you when you aren't horny". Fix that and Prince could be viable again.

Prince has written plenty of horny songs in the last few years. Read the lyrics to "Here Eye Come" or "Elixer" or "Turn Me Loose".
