Prince Shuts Down FDeluxe YouTube Channel?

Happened to head over to the FDeluxe site to purchase a copy of Gaslight on LP and once I had completed the transaction I clicked on their YouTube icon (from their main page) and discovered their YT page had been stripped of all content and videos. All that was left was the following statement from YouTube:

YouTube account fDeluxeVideos has been terminated because we received multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement from claimants including: Controversy Music

Seems more than a little petty. I don't think P can fully understand just how much respect he loses in the eyes of his fans over this sort of behaviour.

Or maybe he doesn't care.

A damn pity. Have been really enthusiastic about all the recent news on Prince.

What videos did they have? fDeluxe vids or old Paisley Park vids by The Family and such?

Just wondering what claim Controversy Music could have... confused

Prince seems to be a bit of a sociopath: i am glad he was successful. Who knows what he would have done!

if they already know how Prince operates wouldnt it be best to follow the proper course of action and ask permission first? do we know if they asked permission, he said no and they put the content up anyway?

lets look at both sides here, this doesnt just happen in the prince world, it happens to many musicians, a popular producer added a video of a song he produced onto his youtube just yesterday, it was taken down hours later due to copyright infringement by the label, its just business.

I would've thought that they'd be pretty careful about not including any Prince material and only put up the new stuff. I could be wrong though. Regardless, this is pretty nasty of Prince, considering these people were once his friends. Wish he wouldn't keep doing this bs, I thought he was becoming less of an officious bastard when he said that comment about bootlegging being alright between fans, but evidently not. Maybe it's just a mistake, but I'm not hopeful.

Yeah i thought of the same..you know you could really hurt people...you should know by now we're not gonna put some dark cloud over your head. This is crazy and yes a bit petty but I guess these are the rules and the least they could have done was ask permission first. It also seems like P is being too bitchy about this copyright crap..I mean dang can he lay off it a bit?

I think this is being done now so prince can release the PP and other associated albums (digitaly) in the near future.

falloff I hope that's a joke. I'd bet money that's the furthest thing from his mind.

.

I'm not going to boo hoo over it since I don't know what content got the channel pulled. But it's typical dickhead behaviour of his. Nevermind, I forgot Love4oneanother, Free the Music, blah blah blah. .

Always saying one thing and doing another. I find it ironic how he complains about the industry and artists don't have a fair shake. Yet he makes it hard for artists he's worked with to earn a living without the Purple Gestapo on their ass.

.

After all I'm sure FDeluxe's goal is to bring Prince's legacy down. Right? He does fine doing that all by himself.

IIRC there were live covers of songs from the Family album. Covers on YT aren't allowed unless u get a compulsary licence and pay royalties, which I guess they didn't do so legally prince is entitled to shut them down. Now do I think it's right? Hell no! It's a cheap move, just another in a long series of cheap moves towards Jill, The Family and The Time's legitimacy to use their own legacy in all freedom, but US copyright laws say prince is right.

I keep thinking this all has a lot to do with prince securing the rights to those artists' albums with him's masters and making sure they have no angle to use against him in order to claim their share of these masters.

And it's also prince being stuck in his old ego thing i.e. "those people would b nothing without me and they take advantage of me and my hard work for their own benefit", which is pretty ridiculous when u know prince is a multimillionaire and most of his past collaborators save Jam & Lewis and maybe Jesse too r struggling hard to make decent money with their work!

I wish prince would understand that making those constant moves against both his fans and old friends is only making him look like a mean man sad

compulsory licence is limited to live covers and audio only-- once you sync to video permission must be obtained.

4 films, TV, documentaries yeah because u use a recording whose masters belong to someone else but I don't think it's true also 4 music videos or live per4mances footages as long as they're covers (i.e. new recordings). If that was the case prince could have prevented Sinead and many others to release music videos for the covers they made of his songs that he disapproved. Same goes with live renditions: I doubt prince obtained video permission from anyone for his live video renditions of Jailhouse Rock or Now's The Time for example. There was no such mention anyway in those concerts' end credits while for example every movie has "courtesy of" added to any specific song they contain. I remember when Kiss was covered in Happy Feet the producers said they asked prince's permission as a courtesy (which resulted in him offering a new track) but they never mentioned having to do so. I may be wrong, though, I'm no expert.

Hell no..Dont do it P..Dont do it. He can be so hypocritical at times. Saying one thing(music should have freedom) and then doing the exact opposite (making it tough and difficult for the associated artist to get their music out there)...

I've made that excuse in the past when similar things have occurred, and I've said "well, maybe that means he'll finally start releasing live shows" or "so he must be getting ready to open the vault"...

Nope. I just don't believe the hope-filled excuses anymore. That's not why these things keep happening, and it shouldn't happen anyway. Now, it is true that this might be done by others (and not directly or with any real involvement from Prince himself--beyond writing checks and a general "protect my stuff" directive. But honestly, if he got a call from the associated artists, he really should make exceptions (or some sort of agreement) to allow them to use such material. As far as commercial concerns, I assume he would be making considerable (if not the lion's share) of any money from sales (if the material were available for purchase) and fees involving those songs--sure, videos would act as advertising for the current live acts (and for their new product)--but how does that hurt him? I just don't get how it's a problem for him. If the things are re-issued at some point--well, he (or WB or whoever) could put them up in some official capacity, F-Deluxe could link to those, life is glorious and wonderful--everybody gets benefits, and the world continues to revolve. Heck--they could do that now--put some version up for sale... instead of letting so much of his legacy sit unused and more and more forgotten every day.

If I might deviated from the topic slightly, is there anywhere where one can purchase AM static and Live & Tight digitally? I was relistening to Gaslight recently, and really enjoying it, but I don't particularly want to pay for international shipping on the new(ish) stuff. Thanks.

Their newer albums after Gaslight seem to be a lot less accessible across the board. I am actually in the same boat as you at the moment. I'm an analogue guy so bought Gaslight on vinyl from their site (despite having the CD). Was expecting to get slugged for shipping (to Australia) but was pleasantly surprised that it was only $10.

After I purchased the LP I went to iTunes to buy AM and Live and lo and behold they are not available. May have to end up buying these from their site as well (pain in the @$$) on CD $15 each and $10 shipping.

Have heard samples from both releases and they sound incredibly funky. Just a pity we can't get them digitally as I think most prefer that over CD's (sans vinyl).

This is so stupid..Other artists can have producers/songwriters play all the music and write their songs but no have the producer pull their stuff off of youtube. So if susannah and st paul had an acapella version of a family song prince could still pull it? It's their FU$$ING voices. They were the faces of the "band". Does prince refuse to let other artists he's produced and played on release videos? NOO.. It's really sad that they cant just [flame snip - no direct attacks on Prince - Militant]

I'm subscribed to both channels on YouTube, I don't know when the other one got shut down but I did notice it was gone a few months back.
The earliest video on fdeluxeofficial was uploaded in April 2011.
