My original post and starting of the thread was a moment of mixed excitement and hunger for an update on the Purple Rain release. Fopp and other record shops in London have always been on the ball with information with upcoming releases- whether it's chalk on board, badly photocopied lists or handwritten notice boards- again, I remember seeing Kate Bush's Aerial front cover for the very first time in Fopp on a badly made poster three weeks before Amazon and any music publication- online or printed (there are also major players bookstores in London such as Foyles/Waterstones that have handwritten 'coming soon' posters and badly photocopied etc). My wish was to see if anyone had seen similar information, or had been sitting on details and was waiting for someone to spot this date or it would trigger a massive search of fans looking for themselves at their various record stores. I knew the date was sudden, but also as a fan of other acts on the label, I was aware that Warners were sometimes...um...lacking when it comes to promotion of something that could be huge...also Prince was involved and so we now how that goes- big teases and then something pops out in a squeak. So my post was a massive 'what the hell is this date?', hence the three question marks. But my faith in Fopp had always been strong as they have been so great virtually every month for the last few years and so, again, there was no information on the org and I knew orgers were hungry for any glimmer of update...add to that my lack of faith in Warners and these were all factors that produced this thread.

Since the post there has been doubt, criticism and someone finally coming out with some information of a more realistic release date. Sorry for those that were all riled by my find and insisted that myself and Fopp were incorrect, but I was just as confused as everyone else...again, the three question marks in the post. What a bizarre few weeks. Let's all pray for November Rain. X

I for one was happy with your post, so no need to make apologies or anything as far as I am concerned. We are all looking for tidbits of news or information about this exciting upcoming release and you have provided just that. Even if it turns out to be 'fake' in the end, it was still entertaining!

And I still wouldn't be surprised if a basic version of the PR remaster (1 disc with little to none extra's) would be in the shops the 16th of June, with a Deluxe version following in November.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

NPGMC year 1 was a great deal, the exact opposite of lf.com

.

Most months NPGMC year one didn't deliver on the contractually obliged minimum for premium subscribers.

.

IDK what Peter Gabriel has done with his So remaster but it really must have been a major disaster for his fans to react the way they did.

.

The biggest flaw was not including any of the (released!) remixes/edits on a fairly expensive box set, and also including a DVD of a live video that later was released on Blu-ray. Read these in this order:

http://www.superdeluxeedi...-official/

http://www.superdeluxeedi...turing-so/

http://www.superdeluxeedi...criticism/

http://www.superdeluxeedi...r-gabriel/

http://www.superdeluxeedi...e-box-set/

.

Not a pretty sight, and then to top it all off, recently a new and previously unrelease remix of "Sledgehammer" appeared on a compilation album: http://www.superdeluxeedi...mix-on-cd/

.

And there's the case of the recent Robert Palmer reissues, which seem to have been sourced from MP3s. When the record label was confronted with these findings, they basically responded "why are you ungrateful brats not happy that our company is spending all this effort re-releasing this shit?"

.

And then there's the case of the recent Tabu-catalogue reissues using remixes and extended versions ripped from vinyl because they couldn't find the original master tapes. Which is bad enough, but they didn't tell anybody beforehand and remained uncommunicative on this subject until much later. Oh, and to top it all off: they recently did locate some of those master tapes, so now the box set releases (where multiple albums from one artist are gathered in one box) will contain NEW CDs with some vinyl rips now being replaced with proper, sourced from the master tapes tracks.

.

And there's the case of the technical flaws WRT the Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-rays. And the bad colors on the Lord Of The Rings Blu-rays.

.

So yeah, even in recent years some companies and artists manage to seriously screw up re-releases and deluxe sets.

I disagree with you here Bart.

Look at what happened with Crystal Ball as early as 1998. Had a similar collection been released in 1993 everyone would have raved about it. But after T's collection had started to leak and with most of the Gold/Come outtakes already in circulation or released in one form or another, everybody complained that CB made no sense at all.

.

Less those things, and more that CB was 45 minutes per CD (i.e. two CDs of material spread over three), segued completely incompatible songs, contained mediocre remixes of not great tracks, contained an edited version of an already released track. And it didn't help that it basically was a grabbag of seemingly random tracks, at a time when thematic bootlegs became the norm.

.

The online booklet didn't help. Being released so long after being announced didn't help. Appearing in shops before being shipped didn't help. The general incompetence of 1-800-New-Funk didn't help. The obnoxious tone of L4OA didn't help ("naysayers will eat words on toast").

.

But it didn't help that plenty of its contents were already widely known, so we knew what we weren't getting, yeah.

.

Plus we'd gotten The Hits/The B-Sides less than five years before, and that one was a fantastic accomplishment despite being a collection of things we (mostly) already had.

I agree that there were many issues with CB but I keep thinking (maybe wrongly) that a similarly midhanded project would have been much more warmly received in 1991 or 1993.

.

As for The Hits/The B-Sides I totally disagree, as far as I'm concerned it was poorly conceived. Let me xplain:

- The idea of a family friendly CD and an offensive lyrics CD was good for the US but totally irrelevant for Europe, Japan and Oceania so maybe there should have been a US edition and a World edition in chronological order.

- Some non-album songs had no business being there (Head and Adore, even though the later was included because of getting airplay in the US but once again that was absurd for the rest of the world).

- Some albums were cruelly underexposed by comparison to others, or even simply ignored (Batman, and fuck not wanting to pay some royalties 2 WB films and DC).

- Some songs were full album versions when most were single edits: totally uncohesive.

- Including IFFY and NC2U was a good move but prince had had at least 2 other huge hits with songs given 2 others: Sugar Walls (in the US) and Manic Monday (worldwide). Now prince singing Sugar Walls... OK this would have been ridiculous, but either the original demo or a live rendition of Manic Monday should have been included.

- The whole B-Sides project was mishandled from square one. Let me xplain: most of those songs had little if any interest at all for the casual listeners, many of them were experimental or intimate cuts and I doubt many of the non-fans who bought the 3 CD-set listened to the third CD more than once: those people would have been better being offered the choice between 2 individual CD's containing the biggest hits and a 3 CD set including all the singles. The fans, on the other hand, being the only target of the b-sides CD, could have enjoyed buying it separately or even better get a 2 CD set with the long versions instead of the edits. They would have bought the compilation too anyway because of the few new tracks.

- The Hits Collection video was a complete disaster: videotapes had no length limit so why not include all the videos (as originally planned)? This mini-collection was a total frustration particularly considering that we could have had twice the content for the same price!

.

In the end the more I think of it, also reading that Peter Gabriel thing above, the more I think that artists and labels aren't the best people to decide what should be in a box set. They should go on forums and ask the fans what they want, what can be spared and what is essential, what shouldn't be excluded at any cost, etc.

New Order had several issues with their remasters as well, mostly around the bonus material. The packaging had several errors with tracknames, and information.

They did make good on the discs though. This was through Rhino, and Rhino sent out replacement discs to those that contacted them.

I bought the Rhino re-issue of Purple Rain (on 180-gm vinyl) several years ago. It sounds great - which is why I'm taking the whole Purple Rain anniversary re-issue so calmly. Warner and Prince are going to have to do something amazing for me to buy it again.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Here u have all the singles, I Feel For You, Manic Monday and Nothing Compares 2 U, 4 totally unheared tracks, all in 3 era-themed CD's, each covering 5 years.

.

Next 2 this fans could have had a limited edition print of the b-sides, which were of zero interest to non-fans.

[Edited 6/4/14 9:35am]

I know you're going for 7" edits but if it's got the edits of When Doves Cry and 1999 then it should never get approval imho! Particularly WDC

[Edited 6/4/14 10:21am]

That's how they were in The Hits/The B-Sides, though.

I mean yeah but it was quite long (they could easily contain up to 4 hours). I remember short vids such as Gett Off (the video single) had very little tape in them but I doubt putting the same amount of tape as they did for a regular 2 hours movie would make it so much more expensive. Altogether prince had released about 45 promo videos by 1993 so IDK, that'd make about 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours, that was doable. Some movies lasted 3 hours and I don't remember the price of movies being higher the longer the movie despite the duplication time being longer and more tape being put in 'em.

I don't remember whether the original tracklist I'd seen once included all the vids, though, probably not, but it was at least twice what we got on the final release. They could at least have selected 2 hours of them (about 30 vids)! I remember I felt like I was ripped off: this short hour of videos, including 2 that already were on the D&P vids collection that I'd purchased a year before sad

+ once again like the B-Sides I guess this one was aimed mostly at fans, I'm not so sure so many non-fans bought music videos of artists even back then when music sales were high.

I bought the Rhino re-issue of Purple Rain (on 180-gm vinyl) several years ago. It sounds great - which is why I'm taking the whole Purple Rain anniversary re-issue so calmly. Warner and Prince are going to have to do something amazing for me to buy it again.

I never got around to picking this release up but will look into it while we wait for this situation to sort itself out.

Yes, it could have been that. It also could have been a single disc, which would have probably been all non-fans ever wanted, dropping the less successful tracks from each of the two released discs. Now, having some of these edits on disc would have made it easier for me to collect them the last few years, but it wouldn't have been a great idea from a commercial standpoint, in my opinion.

Isn't Rhino still part of Warner? I thought that was probably what they'd wind up releasing it under.

I disagree with you here Bart.

This was debated at the time on amp, and there's a pretty good case to be made that he didn't fulfill the contractual minimum (e.g. when we got a video and also the audio of that video and counting this as separate items), depending on how you parse the promised content. The month we got a lo-fi copy of TRC certainly breached the promised content rule, for instance.

.

This is an example, but it is off-topic for this post, so please create a new thread if you want to debate it: https://groups.google.com...Wj0xos5zYJ + https://groups.google.com...k0eAn7ufQJ + https://groups.google.com...xfqySPid0J + https://groups.google.com...zITyC0lJYJ (and probably many more). Note that I don't give a fuck if you "feel" you got plenty, the question is: did they fulfill the contractual minimum. Thus, when we were promised bonus "trax", receiving one is NOT fulfilling the minimum since "trax" implies two or more.

.

(And let's for forget the utter sham that was year two.)

As for The Hits/The B-Sides I totally disagree, as far as I'm concerned it was poorly conceived. Let me xplain:

- The idea of a family friendly CD and an offensive lyrics CD was good for the US but totally irrelevant for Europe, Japan and Oceania so maybe there should have been a US edition and a World edition in chronological order.

.

Would have been far too costly. Hell, why then not go the Michael Jackson route and do a Hits album specific for each country?

.

Chronological order might seem logical, but I feel that this might not have been a great idea. There needs to be a certain flow, and they've done about as good a job as could be done. Plenty of it still feels weird (Alphabet St -> SOTT just isn't right)

.

- Some non-album songs had no business being there (Head and Adore, even though the later was included because of getting airplay in the US but once again that was absurd for the rest of the world).

.

Perhaps, but that's a couple of tracks out of how many?

.

- Some albums were cruelly underexposed by comparison to others, or even simply ignored (Batman, and fuck not wanting to pay some royalties 2 WB films and DC).

.

That was always going to be the case. Skipping Batman... well, Batdance does deserve a place yes.

- Some songs were full album versions when most were single edits: totally uncohesive.

.

True, but in some ways understandable.

.

- Including IFFY and NC2U was a good move but prince had had at least 2 other huge hits with songs given 2 others: Sugar Walls (in the US) and Manic Monday (worldwide). Now prince singing Sugar Walls... OK this would have been ridiculous, but either the original demo or a live rendition of Manic Monday should have been included.

.

Well, arguably both NC2Y and IFFY were hits when they were covered. Sure, NC2Y wasn't a Pince original per se, but it makes sense that Prince would include his version of a massive worldwide hit. Plus, this was exclusive content and thus an extra incentive for fans to buy the set (as if the CD of B-Sides wasn't justification enough).

.

They would have bought the compilation too anyway because of the few new tracks.

.

I disagree. Releasing the B-Sides separately would have been a bad mistake; by including it with this box they a) gave fans a very good reason to buy the set beyond a couple of not that great exclusive tracks, and b) it allowed reviewers to rave about these often forgotten ditties.

.

- The Hits Collection video was a complete disaster: videotapes had no length limit

.

Uh, yes they do.

.

so why not include all the videos (as originally planned)? This mini-collection was a total frustration particularly considering that we could have had twice the content for the same price!

.

That wasn't gonna happen.

.

Look, TH/TBS isn't flawless, but it is IMHO a fantastic introduction to Prince and was certainly a great deal for fans who finally got all those great B-Sides on CD plus songs like "Power Fantastic" (yes, lacking the "tuning" intro) plus a fantastic booklet. I didn't feel ripped off when I bought it, and I still don't feel so. Can't say that about CB.

As always, u make some good points here. I'm certainly 2 picky with The Hits/The B-Sides, I probably have way too much of a completist AND of a fan approach for an objectove analysis of what could be good marketing. The 1 CD by country approach Sony had with MJ was brilliant but I guess it was a first so no way WB would have thought of that in 93 even though it could have made sense (Adore got no radio airplay in Europe but Girls & Boys was in everyone's mind at least in France for example).

.

As u know, past an understandable disappointment on the first day, I had a ball with Crystal Ball (no pun intended) 4 months after it was released, so in the end despite the project's numerous flaws all I can objectively say is that this album gave me hundreds of hours of happiness the exact way it was and has a very special place in my heart ever since, so in the end I couldn't change a thing about it if my life depended on it lol

Because Prince IS Mega Rich! Prince does seem to be in a very happy place these days. That's good! It will transfer to his music. I always love it when Prince mixes a catchy melody, on top of a Rock sounding tune. This is where I feel 3rdEyeGirl has really got his creative juices flowing again. Now that he has complete ownership of his catalog, and has Warner Bros there for marketing and distribution, Prince can completely focus on the music. Let's be honest, when Prince started devoting too much of his attention to "ownership" and "who gets the lion's share of the profits", his music suffered.

Words cannot expressed how happy I am about this new deluxe remaster of Purple Rain. It's my top favorite album, tied with Nirvana's "Nevermind." (In my humble opinion)

Curious ... looking through the guys work, he's capable of some decent stuff, but these propsoed designs are awful. They in no way evoke the memory of Purple Rain.

Just as well that this is someone's fantasy rather than the real thing.
