Desire

Does anyone else absolutely love this song? It doesn't seem to be particularly talked about, even when discussing The Family's album. Also it's one of only a few songs that I enjoy as much sung by the act that released it as sung by Prince, although I think Prince's more uptempo version would be my favourite if I had to choose.
Which version do other people prefer?

Love it. I prefer The Family's version, I think because of the tempo and the mood - St Paul is breathing in my ear. Prince seems across the room.

Beautiful song, Eric adds so much to this composition, together with Prince's songwriting they just had the greatest collaboration.

It doesn't make much difference to me who's singing, no more than whether it's Prince or Sheila or John playing the drums: in the end singers are just instrumentists P chose to interpret certain parts of a song. Of course I'd enjoy having P's renditions released but not more than any other interesting alternate take of any particular song.

I love Desire, it's a great track and a wonderful closer for the album.

the one with Prince on guitar reminds me of his Small Club Just My Imagination

I love both. U feel the times. Like Emancipation is his Mayte love letter. the Family-Desire is his Susannah love letter. Love the flow the feel the newness...

I prefer Prince's own version, definitely. When I put it on I often have to play it several times.

Could the Family version be mainly the same recording, just with the drums taken out and the whole thing slowed down? "Nothing Compares 2 U" to me always sounded like they just took the drums out and that's why it sounds as "abstract" as it does.

I imagine that St. Paul did his best to capture P's entire vocal performance, under explicit command, to the same backing, as with the other Family tracks, and that the seductive, drumless album-closer version is something arrived at only during mixing (and/or to work best with Claire Fischer's added orchestral parts).

.

While I very much enjoy both versions, I believe its original configuration is the superior of the two.

A great melody, cool lyrics and a killer saxophone..this is on rotation in my car at the moment. I miss this era so much, when awesome pop songs came from Prince so effortlessly. It's a shame my bootleg copy is pretty low fidelity..I'd love to hear the P version in great quality.

I totally agree. That was an amazingly fruitful time and came out during an era of confusion and frustration with The Time just having dissolved and it (as well as Mutiny and High Fashion) were basically recorded in a day at the warehouse. The movie hadn't come out yet, so Prince wasn't the super-mega star he'd be in a month and Desire is a nice sensual track that hides the termoil that was going on in the Prince camp.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

I could've paid more attention to him than I did. I liked his voice well enough to have bought his solo album, but I don't remember actually getting around to hearing it. penguin

Much prefer The Family's version to Prince's. The mood is more romantic.. Prince's just sounds like another dance jam with his hard marching drums. The strings always teleport me to someplace else cloud9
