That's why I'm not buying Prince's music legally anymore - because I'd be putting his gilfriends through high school.

Forgive me for stating the obvious but aren't these artists signing the contracts that give the record execs the money to take their kids to the beach?

What is stopping them from forming some sort of consortium and paying themselves? Plus let's not act like our favorite artists don't put out garbage music sometimes. Seventeen dollars for an album when I only like one or two songs is over with.

What is said here is nothing different than what he has said for years. Was he taken out of context then too?

The interview was conducted March 8th, the night of Prince and The NPG's concert at the Hollywood Palladium a full month before the Warner Bros. agreement to remaster Prince's Warner Bros. back catalogue on April 18th. It sounds like he was frustrated with negotiations with Epic and Warners.

I would fall off my chair if I saw Prince chilling on the beach somewhere. I bet he avoids the sun. Probably why he looks 10 years younger than he is.

Thanks for the info. Contrary to Rolling Stone's piece conflating the comments with the WB deal, the Essence interview the quotes came from was conducted before the deal was finalized. So it wasn't a case of "just signed with them and already trashing them".

You're right. It's much better to trash a potential business partner before you hook up with them. nod

We don't know if he was referencing WB at all since the deal wasn't publically known or acknowledged at the time. He could've been speaking in general about other past deals with EMI, Arista, Sony or the old regime at Warners. Regardless the context RS puts the quotes in, that it was about the current WB deal couldn't be true.

The image of Prince talking to children is lovely and hilarious at the same time.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Prince is still nuts on this issue.

The record companies put their money at risk and get a return on that when that risk pays off. It doesnt' always pay off. Some artists never break through, some have spotty success. Even as successful as Prince is, look at his own singles release history. US top 100 singles

92

didn't chart

11

4 songs didn't chart

101

5 songs didn't chart

70

104

2 songs didn't chart

8

(on a roll, right? - not exactly next two sings)

52

didn't chart

after that history, WB took a huge gamble, they didn't just release a new album, they funded a movie and a huge success with purple rain.

2

25

Prince followed that up with songs that charted

2

song didn't chart

ather those mixed results, WB funded another movie (that bombed), and that movie results in this chart results

1

23

63

song didn't chart

so WB funded another movie (sign O the times), singles from that

3

WB pressed the next album and right before it's release prince changed his mind. They destroyed all of that inventory.

next album

they followed that by putting his music in a new movie (batman)

song didn't chart

then they funded another movie (that bombed)

After this, prince started his war with WB.

Now I'm sure WB made a nice overall profit over this time, but they certainly funded individual projects and releases that lost money. And also funded prince side protoges that lost money (such as Carmen Electra).

WB has to make money overall because they also fund other artists that lose money. Overall they need to show a net profit and the people managing all of this should make enough money to send their kids to college. Otherwise why would they bother.

COmpare all of this to Prince's record self releasing. He won't spend his money in advance to promote anything. As a reasult he hasn't hit the top 40 with a non WB release since the most beautiful girl in the world in 1994 when he was trying to prove a point.

I'm thinking Morris.

That quote was funny. I can just picture half of the kids being totally confused.
