Disney's "Let It Go" from the film FROZEN - inspired by Prince!

[Songwriter] Robert Lopez remembered hearing [Prince's song Letitgo] 20 years ago when it came out and really liking it for it’s general theme of being an isolated person your whole life and then just deciding to “Let it Go”. However the Prince song was more soulful and funky in it’s nature so it would have to be completely re-written to fit into the context of a Disney movie.

The couple finally had their idea and theme and quickly began composing and arranging the music and lyrics for the song. They were close to completion and had even cut a few demos when they decided it would be best to contact Prince and let him know how they had used his song for inspiration anod ask if there were going to be any obligations contractually between Disney and Paisley Park records. He informed them that there would be no such obligation and that music was free expression and he was honored to have helped in any way. His only request was that he be sent a preview copy of the song to see if there was anything he could contribute.

The couple immediately sent over their demo and were anxiously awaiting his contribution but within a few hours they got a response from Prince “this is going to be a hit – I wouldn’t change anything – well except you probably need a tag line at the end of your chorus”. Prince had confirmed what the couple already knew – they needed a tag line and had tried to write a few but nothing was sticking. They got on the phone with Prince and had a brief conversation.

Prince asked them what the movie was going to be about. When they explained the general plot of the movie Prince was slightly amused. “A movie about a town suffering due to being Frozen over? Sounds like my life growing up – part of the reason for my isolation. But hey – I’m from Minneapolis so the cold never bothered me anyway – so I can’t wait to see the movie”.

It didn’t stick with them at the time but when the couple went back through their notes from the call the line “the cold never bothered me anyway” stuck in their heads and they had their tag line.

The Lopez’s concluded their interview with me by saying “so when you are in the theater, your car or your living room – wherever – singing along with your children or just yourself and you hear the line “the cold never bothered me anyway” know that we wrote that line for Prince and about him – it is our secret tribute to him to thank him for helping to inspire what we feel turned out to be an amazing song.

We agree – and based on taking home the Academy award for best song, so evidently does the rest of the world.

As I've mentioned before--I spend my working day in a preschool, which means, currently, hearing nothing but kids singing Frozen tunes 10 hours a day (actually, it's worse than that, since my nine-year-old daughter spends quite a bit of the remaining time in my day doing the same thing). The fact that Prince had something to do with my current torture is, well... odd, to say the least.

I wonder y they felt they might have to get P's permission, I mean legally speaking it makes no sense: both songs are totally different so it's not like one could have been accused of plagiarizing the other eek

How cool is that? I freakin love BOTH songs!

My kids are 18 and 16 (too old and cool for a Disney movie). My wife and I were talking about how much we missed taking them to animated movies (because we loved them ourselves!). So, we decided to take our niece and nephew to Frozen a couple of weeks ago. Loved the movie and that song stuck with me.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

One of the best Prince stories in a long time.

.

.

It's also one of the best examples of Prince as a true Gemini. That he's humble and isn't threatened before he's even heard he song, and then offers to graciously give them creative feedback, is something I wouldn't have expected.
