With the Prince/WB remasters news, we've been speculating about what bonus tracks we'll get and whether we'll get DVDs with filmed concerts or music videos or whatever, then a thought came to me.

Pop acts like Queen and Michael Jackson have released DVDs of their music videos. In fact as you all know, WB did something for Mr. P with "The Hits Collection" on VHS which collected some of his videos for that greatest hits compilation, which they then transfered directly to DVD.

This is very unlikely, but what if we get a DVD anthology release that collects all his WB-era videos from "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (both versions) up to...was "Dinner with Delores" the last video he did for WB? I can't remember. But point is, every video and uncut.

Last video was indeed DFD.

An anthology would be cool but I'd rather have a bonus DVD with a live show or 2 and the related promo videos and TV appearances alongside each remaster.

What I'd rather see in terms of anthology is a YT channel where, at LONG last, all the videos (both Prince and side project) would be uploaded. This would be an awesome promotional tool to push the rerelease's sales if u ask me.

Also, starting in the early 90's there r a huge number of yet to be released videos, so there could as well be a video collection boxset with ALL the videos so far (incl. post WB) AND a certain number of previously unreleased videos to appeal the fans, but I really question the relevance of DVD video collections nowadays: better to remaster them and put 'em directly on YT to promote audio recordings.

Putting (some) of them on YT would be great, especially for advertising to the younger generation.

But, hell, why not make some $?

But even though a hi-hi-hi-hi-def version of them vids could make a nice boxset (or nice additions to each album's remaster) I strongly believe that not SOME but ALL of them have to end on YT.

Madonna, Michael, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, Björk... everyone in fact... they may sell FVDs for the fans but nonetheless their WHOLE music videos library is available on YT in excellent quality. That's how things b in 2014.

Warner Archive releases movies and other video content on DVDRs in a Manufacture On Demand capacity. They mostly release material that will sell but not in enough quantities to justify printing and distributing thousands of pressed discs. They sell this material online at the wbshop.com and just about everything available there can also be purchased on Amazon.

It would make sense to release material like the Syracuse show in this way, thereby making some money and meeting the demand without risking very much investment.

In fact I emailed the wbshop just a couple months ago requesting that very show (as well as Sheila's Live Romance 1600 & 3 Chains O' Gold) be added their library. I got a response that the material I was requesting was not under consideration at this time.

However, now that Prince & WB have a deal, why not?!?

I will say there are things I don't like about MOD products. I don't like that they usually cost a bit more than pressed discs of similar material. This should not be necessary since they are keeping their costs down they should be able to pass that savings on to the the consumer. Greedy bastards.

I also don't like that these more expensive discs will not last as long as pressed discs. Because they are recordable discs the recorded surface is not protected like a pressed disc leaving them much more vulnerable to damage. And, it's well known that digital information will degrade faster on recordable media than on pressed media.

Those reservations aside, I have purchased a hand full of MOD discs from WB just to have the best quality possible on a physical media for material that I really love and want in my library. These (and other) Prince shows that I only have on VHS (and DVDRs I burned from my own VHS) fit that bill and I would rather purchase MOD versions than digital copies...

Just an idea, but a good one, no?

What do y'all think?

Might be the only way to get all this classic material on DVD.

Interesting idea but the question is... do they LICENCE stuff over there, or is it precisely about taking advantage of properties they OWN? Because now they don't own those films anymore (if they ever did, I ain't sure of the legal status of the live video shows before the new deal).

Honestly I think we'll see those rereleased one way or another sooner or later, and if they don't get a proper rerelease, even better than MOD would be a downloadable video (why in the world even go thru the cost of making a DVDR and send it by mail instead of offering it for download since anyway I guess u don't get it with full cover art and booklet?).

When u see how many times SOTT (the film) has been rereleased over the last 10 years, there's obviously a market for P's 80's shows so in the end if WB won't do it I'm sure someone else will. It's strange though that it won't be rereleased alongside the PR remaster, even separately, sales would certainly have benefited from the hype.

The Warner Archive DVDs do come with artwork, however, the ones I have purchased have not come with booklets. That said, new DVDs rarely come with booklets these days. Only special collector's editions sometimes have them.

The discs always come in standard cases. You can't tell them from regular discs on your shelf without very close inspection. Most people would never be able to tell the difference.

Also, there is a disclaimer when you buy them that says that due to copy protection, the discs may not play on computers and some players with recording capaabilities.

That said, ALL of the ones I have purchased have played on my computer and have been successfully ripped for backup (I'm not paying that much for recordable media and then NOT backing it up!).

You're commenting about Syracuse here, but in regards to the music videos themselves, those are still licensed by the labels if they were sent out as promos and "serviced". Otherwise, licensing departments are pretty much stuffed between legal, and royalties handling and all the requests end up on the same desks eventually. It wouldn't be a licensing issue though.

I think a DVD of Prince music videos is a great idea. I would like it to include Automatic, Little Red Corvette and Mountains.

there was a video made for that song but's the unreleased version and was shown before the shows on the Live Experience Tour March 95
