what would be possible inclusions on an ATWIAD remaster?

iirc there aren't that many tracks from this era that went into the vault,

at least not that we know of. i'm sure there are a lot, but the ones that

we have heard (about) are only a few, right?

/

would these count:

all day, all night

our destiny

roadhouse garden

/

i can't really think of anything else. most of ATWIAD was recorded as

they were on the road with the purple rain tour and not too long after

the tour ended he started working on what would become parade. or

do i have a serious black out regarding this whole period?

/

to me it seems like the one period that has the least stuff floating out

there either heard or unheard. so it would be very interesting to see

what would be included on a possible remaster as far as bonus tracks.

An obvious one for me (that is very unlikely) is the complete "America" extended version, all 21 friggin minutes. "Girl" extended cut would be cool too.

Be interesting to hear the original version of the title track that the Coleman siblings produced which Prince then re-recorded for the album. I wonder if that's possible?

parade album since they share a certain atmosphere.

There is an obvious overlap with each period. For me, The Family was the bridge between ATWIAD and Parade, but with Parade having so many outtakes of its own, I'll bundle the Family (and the AC / Romance 1600 work) with ATWIAD.

Besides, being June 85 recordings, they are nearer ATWIAD than Parade, being recorded a couple of weeks after Hello.

They did rehearse Go in France at thhe show America was videoed

Go also has the same flow of Splash Adonis & Bathsheba and a few others

Funny thing is, I've always associated Mia Bocca with Parade, despite its official release date. It is, and sounds far more Alexa De Paris than it does U Got the Look.

Raises a good question. Do you go with sound or recording date. Roadhouse is, in date terms, far more ATWIAD (being close to Hello) than PR or Parade, but it doesn't sound like an ATWIAD track.

i know what you mean, but it's not really about flow as much as it is

about putting tracks on there that were recorded after the sessions

for the previous album and before serious sessions began for the next

project.

.

adonis and bathsheba is from august 86 iirc

.

the tracks i mentioned were all recorded in june of 84, abou 2 or 3

weeks before the release of purple rain. so they would kind of fit as

the first tracks recorded toward a new album.

.

it's a slippery slope with all this stuff and it will be very interesting to

see what will be put on which remaster - if we're even getting these

kind of songs at all because only prince knows yet what he will put on

the remastered albums. it could be just bsides and 12" but let's hope

not.

The problem we face is Prince never really recorded "sessions" like most artists. He pumped out stuff all the time.

One way would be to assume that any recording post the album release date, belongs to the album after, but that would make B sides out of era, or the likes of Roadhouse belong to Parade, even though it sounds more Purple Rain.

There is no obvious answer.

oh, you're right! i forgot about the bsides, many of which were recorded well after

the albums 'they belong to' were released. but they obviously do belong to that

specific era.

i wonder if this is giving prince the same headache at the moment lol

I mean they just don't feel or sound like anything on ATWIAD to me (at least)

.

In that 1984-1985/86 period we could put together at least 10 albums that sound totally different

.

Like ATWIAD sounds like a different direction of the Purple Rain sound

And songs like (Roadhouse Garden, Our Destiny, Manic Monday, 4 the Tears in Your Eyes, Dance Electric, etc) sound like another direction of the Purple Rain sound

Then there is the Family sessions with that Purple Rain direction before they changed 2 a more Parade era sound:Desire, Nothing Compares 2 U, Felline etc

.

These kinds of discussions just get me all hot and bothered lol

Here's my hope for these very exciting remasters, from most interesting to least so for me:

1. Songs that we've never even heard of.

2. Songs for which we have titles and some recording info, but there's no circulating outtake.

3. Songs for which the circulating outtakes are incomplete, unfinished, or very low quality. In this category, I'd love to hear finished high quality versions of Go and Can I Play With U, although they might fit better with Parade.

4. Songs that are unreleased, but we already have decent versions in circulation.

5. Previously released rarities. Extended versions. B-sides.

6. Remastered versions of the album tracks.

Basically, I want to hear stuff that's new! (new to the fans at least)

There's the version of ATWIAD with the funky bass, but apart from that I'm struggling to think of anything else unreleased which could go on it. Presumably there are some demo versions of the other tracks on the album which aren't circulating. If so, it would be nice to have a solo piano version of The Ladder, like the one from the end of that documentary, as I've always thought the studio version was horribly over-produced (never liked that pretentious story at the beginning either.)

Yeah, there's kind of a problem with any potential remastering project including bonus tracks, because if you only stick to the tracks that were intended for the album you're going to miss a whole lot of vault stuff recorded at the same time. Perhaps a digital store would be the best place for those tracks, where you can buy individual ones you're interested in, or groupings of songs by time period.

The Family and Romance 1600 outtakes/prince versions of these songs belong with the Family and Romance 1600 remasters, leave them outta ATWIAD!!! And P's rendition of All Day, All Night would be better on the Jill Jones remaster.

As for The Dance Electric it'd be complicated I think, for whoever now owns the masters of André's version owns the instrumental track and therefore P could have trouble releasing his own version without a proper licence, but I may be wrong.

..

Tracklist of ATWIAD remaster box-set oughta include:

.

CD1: The original album

As such.

.

CD2-3: The non-album tracks:

Pt. 1 - The B-Sides

- 4 The Tears In Your Eyes - 2:49 (not technically a b-side but u know)

- She's Always In My Hair - 3:37

- Hello - 3:24

- Girl - 3:47

Pt. 2 - The alternate takes:

- 4 The Tears In Your Eyes - 3:24 (the acoustic version from The B-Sides)

- Paisley Park (Remix) - 6:57

- Raspberry Beret (New Mix) - 6:36

- She's Always In My Hair (New Mix) - 6:32

- Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix) - 6:19

- Hello (Fresh Dance Mix - 6:12

- America - 21:37 (the extended version)

- Girl - 7:36 (the extended version)

- America - 21:31 (the Black Archives compilation edit, a bit ridiculous I'll admit but hell...)

Pt. 3 - The music videos takes:

- Paisley Park - 3:36 (the edit from the music video)

- Raspberry Beret - 4:18 (the mix from the music video)

- America - 9:53 (the live version from the music video)

.

CD 3-4 The Unreleased

2 80 minutes CD's of outtakes and unreleased mixes from 84-85.

.

DVD1

The full Nice show from which the video from America was taken (if pro-shot in its entirety)

The 3 music videos.

See, there is so much to go on to the Parade remaster, that the Family album demos would not have a spot other than the ATWIAD deluxe edition.

Right???

NOT RIGHT.

They belong to The Family deluxe edition, no-where-else!

Thanks for quitting treating the side-projects as if they didn't exist.

hmmm Is it not Prince singing those Family demos? I wouldn't put Apollonia's demo of "Manic Monday" on the Bangles deluxe edition, but I think it could go on a Apollonia 6 deluxe, for instance.

wouldn't All Day All night be on Purple Rain? it was performed at the 84 birthday show before the album came out cool

No because Purple Rain was pretty much in the can. All Day, All Night was never going to be on PR.

But, it really could go with either ATWIAD or Purple Rain because it was intended for neither but recorded between both...
