Chart movement is steadlily up. Fallinlove2nite had reached Top 100 by day two but only stayed there for a couple of days. A question to ponder is who is buying The Breakdown. Is the buying audience thus far all hardcore Prince fans. Since no radio airplay yet (which was a catalyst for Fallinlove2nite sales) how does anyone else even know this song is out there to buy?

This song needs a (good) video. Today. Right now, on youtube because that's where everyone goes first. I have had 12 people call or text me and ask for a link bc they heard about the song but couldn't find the video on youtube.

Let's pray/hope that the good sales in Sweden and Netherlands will have a domino effect on the northern europoean countries, and then slowly leading to more sales in all other countries. If they're getting past the 20-line, they'll probably get alot more recognition.

The truth is you can't tell. Probably, if you were old enough the day Adore came out, you didn't right away say it's a classic, but it became one, right? So if The Breakdown gets some good exposure and is liked by enough people to get requested or played regularly -- no matter how cheesy, compressed or flawed you personally think it is -- then it will be a classic.

As for people calling it a classic right away, it's no different but there is a crucial fact: you need enthusiasm for the song, so those "early adopters" are just doing what they are supposed to do and saying...Wow! I love this song! INSTANT CLASSIC! A would be classic needs this kind of reaction.

As for me, I think it's very Empty Room-ish. But then again, I thought Empty Room was just Purple Rain, part two. Then you guys went and decided it was a Prince classic. And now that he performed Empty Room so amazingly at Montreux, I think I was a snob when I sneezed on Empty Room.

Same thing with Chaos and Disorder, I just thought it was an ok rocker when it came out. But now that I've seen him perform it with 3rdEyeGirl...

In the end, Prince writes a lot of songs that are templates for different versions, recorded or live -- the "template" of The Breakdown is pretty solid, you can tell that live, it steamrolls. So the recorded version sounds a little too AOR ballad - don't worry, if it gets liked by enough people between those who like it with extra cheese and those who can only like it live and raw, then it will be, without my help or yours, a classic.

I'm not willing to say it's an instant classic (and I have yet to listen to it live, though I think I have some recordings of it)--but what you say is interesting. What you say about songs like Empty Room for you makes me think of When I Lay My Hands On U--which was completely uninteresting to me when it came out, but in live performance seems to be something else entirely (at least listening to recordings, or seeing it in the Montreux videos). A Prince classic could be a song you want to hear live, not necessarily one you want to hear in the studio version.

it's interesting how we all differ in the songs we enjoy more live/studio.

personally, i enjoy The Breakdown more in it's studio version than the

live one. just like "Dolphin", which is kinda cool live, but never has the

same 'roundness' (for lack of a better word since i really don't know

how else to describe it) as the studio version. they just don't seem to

flow as naturally in their live performances.

but perhaps i just haven't heard the right live performance yet for this

song.

same goes for "empty room", although there are many

performances of it that i like, and i absolutely love the

extended guitar work on them, there is none that come

even close to the 94/95(?) studio version that hammers

it all home sublimely in just over 3 minutes.

Same here. I rarely prefer the live versions.

I know may will disagree, but I prefer the studio Days Of Wild to any of the live, because Prince generally shouts his rap live.
