Here is a thread for the imminent chart appearances of "The Breakdown", the new single.

I've decided this is my org role from now on. Charting every single Prince releases from now on. Apparently I have the free time.

How can there be anything on Amazon when right now the song is only available on iTunes? lol

The full global release is on Monday, apparently.

I'll be buying it. But not from iTunes, or Amazon. I'll be getting it from Google Play.

Isn't it in the Top 200 on Itunes US charts? Can someone verify.

138 Daft Punk - Get Lucky (feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers)

I really don't care how it charts. Just to get Prince back writing something I like is enough for me. His critical reputation is more important than commercial success.

Wherever it charts, 'The Breakdown' is a new, bona-fide Prince classic, in my opinion. It stands with his greatest work.

It's one thing to establish a sound, it's another to repeat and copy it. That's why "The Breakdown" won't be considered a classic.

Whoa slow your roll there fella. A classic? It's a solid song but you can't compare this to his earlier "classic work". Not even close. The only reason this song stands out at all is because his output has been so meh for so long but a classic? Now that's a stretch.

These constant swings are probably pretty meaningless, aren't they? I know we're used to constant updates anymore in today's world, but that makes us think that minor hiccups are more significant than long-term trends (or in this case, a few days at least). I'd guess that outside people who actually watch Prince regularly, this thing has hardly even been noticed, YET (I think it might take off once it is). But it dropped late on Friday, it's a weekend, it's only US... it doesn't take much to make it bounce down or up on the charts...

I don't know. I'll watch the updates, but ... it's just odd to me. I feel the same way with being told what the movie results for a weekend are going to be on Saturday morning... really? The word of mouth hasn't even started... and then the film's dead and you pull all the support because of a weak opening? Or a TV show's pulled after 1 episode?

Things don't grow anymore.

I was sort of with you until you brought in movies and TV shows. wink Except in the rarest of cases, both can be tracked fairly reliably by early figures... the most common exceptions are independent films and cable series and in both cases the "distributor" tends to give them more time than blockbusters and mainstream tv networks.

Songs are a little different... I don't think posting hourly figures is anything but busy work but a random sampling once per day should tell something by the time the week is up - if it's going to grow or not.

What will be interesting, maybe even moreso than Fallinlove2nite, is if the song gets airplay. The fact that over 20 US Top 40 radio stations played Fil2n a considerable amount bodes decently for the new song but will Warners put the same effort into it than Epic did, at least initally. Will a video be made, will Prince find other ways to promote the song, will the mainstream open up to it? Fil2n was a nice little party jam but The Breakdown is heavier. Will it get played or is the song just designed as a teaser for the album and it really doesn't matter? It would seem to me that Prince, if The Breakdown is truly one his favorite songs and he professed on Arsenio, would want to get it out there. Stay tuned!

The movie thing is probably tied to where I live and my own schedule. I rarely get to a film the first week (even when it's one I want to see) and we have limited screens in our area. So, a smaller film (that doesn't hit big) is gone before it can build; we don't have the screens for the theaters to put it on if it's not filling a lot of seats.

This is how it is where I live, too. I have to drive about 45 mins away to see a movie bc usually only the "blockbuster" films are played here.

So, you posit that Warners may not put in effort for the song? Laughable
