"

S.S.T. was first available as a download on the NPG Music Club within 24 hours of its recording in response to Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans, MO, USA. Two days later, the song was offered as a download bundle with Brand New Orleans and Mavis Staples' You Will Be Moved. Eight weeks later, a CD single of S.S.T. was released.

Initial tracking took place on 2 September, 2005 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, as Prince watched footage of Hurricane Katrina's effects on the city of New Orleans while listening to Sade's The Sweetest Taboo (from the 1985 album Promise, also released as a single), which became the acronym used for the song's title ("Sade's Sweetest Taboo").

"S.S.T." is also an acronym for "sea surface temperature", which can be used in forecasting hurricanes. Brand New Orleans, which is based around the final instrumental section of S.S.T., was recorded at the same session. "

Didn't Prince claim that Bria's album was pretty much a Sade thing? So--like, he's done that, right? Why do it again?

And yes, I know the claim was insane--but if he did think that Elixer was his "Sade" record, I wouldn't hold my breath for him to really do one.

No, not really. He didn't really compare the album to Sade's. He just said it was the type of album you could play like a Sade album while sipping a glass of wine.

I love Sade and I would love this to happen but unfortunately I think Sade will take some time off after Soldier of love. However don't forget that Ryan Waters from Sade is playing with Liv Warfield right now

He did. The link above shows him saying he needed to "clarify." I think the first reference was in a print interview somewhere that I can't recall either.

Thanks--didn't watch the clip (couldn't where and when I am)--if an earlier reference were in print, who knows what he actually said lol.

In all honesty, I'm not horribly interested in the idea of a Prince/Sade collaboration. I only know Sade from singles, but I've never been all that blown away. I know I must be missing something, but I'm probably okay with it.

I can undestand that. To tell you the truth, I was not a big Sade fan until the "Stronger Than Pride" album came out. I liked the album and went back and purchased "Promise." When I got "Promise," it clicked with me and I became a big fan of theirs. A lot of their music is hard to describe. It's part r&b, part jazz, part pop. part world, part reggae. It's all over the place (in a good way). If you are a fan of any of the formentioned genres, I suggest you check them out.

Also, if you watch one of the live dvds that they have out, I think you might like them too. Helen captivates an audience like no other. She knows she's not the best singer in the world, but she knows how to use what she's got. She's also sexy as hell. wink

Totally agree, I would love a 100% Prince produced Sade album with one duet from the two.

According to the "Girl at Lipstick Alley" Sade spent a few days with Prince at PP in the early 90's and no one really knew what they were doing (sleeping together or recording music). I tend to find that source believable on most of her claims but that one is one of those I find the most doubtful: hard to believe it wouldn't have been documented earlier, Sade isn't exactly anybody and everyone at PP would have gossiped about it.

On a sidenote I totally agree with comparing Sade's music and Elixer in terms of the mood the put u in, I kind of indeed feel like lightning an incence stick and candles, taking a bubble bath while drinking some red wine when I listen to both.

Sade writes circles around Prince? Are you kidding? She writes some decent lyrics, I will admit that. But musically the WHOLE band is Matthewman, who is a Prince-like polymath.

She and the band are polished and produced well in the studio (again, by Matthewman) but there is little or no "there there" when raw musical talent and improv are concerned.

I dont see her (or them) jamming well into the night (Matthewman has his band Cottonbelly for that) and breaking any new ground.

Every Sade album and song sounds like any other--so the record companies LOVE her.

If you want to put Prince into a collaboration then Erykah B would be a better fit.

She blows Adu away anyway.

And I am a Sade fan!

But you HAVE TO REALISTIC.

She doesnt belong in his zip code.

No one since Mozart really does.

Oh please .... I'm not talking 83-88 .... I mean now. Prince can't write a song where every verse doesn't rhyme. He is absolutely cringeworthy as a song writer these days. Embarrassing lyrics and vocal arrangements.

And he uses CHORDS!! And rhythms!!! And all sorts of other artificial things!! It's just too much like he's using the skills he's learned in years of his craft to create something that fits into the history of popular music!!

Really, what's the thing with objecting to rhyme? I'll admit that Prince has his go-to rhyming pairs (or rhyming trios or quartets) that he will nearly always match up (thus losing the element of shock and surprise that really skillful use of rhyme allows), but are you objecting to his use of rhyme as a formal approach at all? Why? I can't think of much pop music (in English, at least) that doesn't use rhyme (or approximate rhyme) as a basic structural element--why, as a pop composer, would he go without it? There's always the chance that in trying to match what he's saying to the form he's chosen, he might surprise himself by what comes out. I don't expect it, but it might happen.

No, his lyrics aren't earth-shatteringly great--but it's not using rhyme that does that to him. It's more that he doesn't care to push himself to do the best he can to do something new within the formal conventions--instead frequently accepting slight variations on ideas and phrasings he's already used in the past. Or maybe he just can't do better. His lyrics were always spotty, with only moments of greatness among a lot of "getting the job done."

Your typical greeting card is terrible verse, but it's not the rhyme or the metrical verse that makes it so. It's the paucity of meaning or real emotion and imagination. Saying the same thing without rhyme (and other formal restrictions) just leaves you with a free-verse greeting card (or, in fact, just prose with linebreaks)... and there's nothing more pathetic than that.

Your right he hasn't ever been the greatest lyricist but he's had his moments of brilliance there as well. However, at this stage I often find myself cringing at the lyrics and nearly as often the clumsy way he delivers his vocal. Songs like Rock n' Roll Love Afair. I mean if you are going to name a song using a pretty antiquated term like RNR you need to bring it and with swagger. It's like he's lost his swagger... And after all he is 52 and no one can keep up the torrid pace of sheer energy, eroticism, and funk rock star badass like he was doing.

Yes I hate how everything rhymes. Every single song... He will insert any word at the end of a verse just to ensure it rhymes. I thought Lotus Flower (the single disc) was some of his best lyrical writing in some time. Pretzelbodylogic is so much fun....blah blah blah. Listen to U2, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye

It's almost crushing how immature his lyrics sound. Particulary on R&bs based songs. Fallinluvtonight, & Breakfast can wait

A couple of things.

First, I dont see how you can (legitimately) abstract out lyrics from the total organic finished product of a song. I mean, Hey Jude isnt Shakespear, but it becomes great (lyrics too) becuase of the the totality of the thing.

Prince wants to EXPLORE. Simple, stripped down rock and roll (with 3rdEG) DOESNT WANT OR NEED seriously heavy lyrics. Look at Led Zeppelin 2.

He did the eloquent/deep things PLENTY of times in the past. Jsut listen to Rainbow Children for one example.

Listen to Avalanche for God's sake.

"Abraham Lincoln was a racist

"Who said, "you cannot escape from history"

Could Bono (who, like Elvis, is now a bloated, annoying caricature of his former self BECAUSE he never evolved) ever write it better?

Even in the Joshua Tree days?

Come on yourself.

U2, Marvin and Stevie all took a break from the profound to have some fun.

Lemon.

Lets get it on.

MasterBlaster.

Lyrics are like colors on a palette.

You can say Picasso's reds don't blow Pollacks away and you are probably right.

But Picasso is Picasso and Pollack is just another artist when all is said and done.

Ask him to draw a lamp and you would see what I mean.

The thing about Prince for me is that stuff I dont immediately take to has a way of sneaking up on me a few years later and suddenly its great.

THATS entertainment.
