Forever In My Life ~ Prince 1986/87

AOL LIVE / JULY 22, 1997

Question: What was your inspiration for the song Forever In My Life?
TheArtst: Susannah
TheArtst: she knows

La da da da da da da da
La da da da da da da da
There comes a time, in every man's life
When he get's tired of foolin' around
Juggling hearts in a three ring circus
Someday will drive a body down 2 the ground
I never imagined that love would rain on me
And make me want 2 settle down
Baby it's true, I think I do
And I just wanna tell U that I wanna with U (baby, if U do 2)
And baby if U do 2
Forever, forever, baby I want U forever
I wanna keep U 4 the rest of my life (U can make right)
All that is wrong in my world (U are my saviour)
U can make right (U are my light)
U are my saviour, U are my light (Forever I want U in my life)
Forever I want U in my life

(La da da da da da da da)
(La da da da da da)

(Every man's journey)
There comes a road in every man's journey (don't be afraid)
A road that he's afraid 2 walk on his own (I'm at that road)
I'm here 2 tell U that I'm at that road (I'd rather walk it with)
And I'd rather walk it (U than walk it alone)
with U than walk it alone (U are my future)
U are my hero, U are my future (no past)
When I am with U, I have no past
Oh baby my one and only desire (make this feelin' last)
Is find some way in this doggone world (sugar it's true)
2 make this feelin' last (I know I do)
Oh baby it's true, I know I do (2 with U)
And I just wanna tell U that I
want 2 with U, yeah
And baby if U do 2
Forever, forever, I want U baby, baby forever (U can make right)
I wanna keep U 4 the rest of my life (U are my saviour)
All that is wrong in my world (U are my light)
U can make right (Forever I want U in my life)
U are my saviour, U are my light (La da da da da da da da)
Forever I want U in my life (La da da da da da da da)

Forever In My Life is the ninth and final track on the first disc of Prince's ninth album Sign O' The Times. A live version was also included in the concert movie Sign O' The Times, also incorporating lyrics from It.

Initial tracking took place on 7 August, 1986 (the day after the recording of Hot Thing which precedes it on the album, and the day before Make Your Mama Happy), at Prince's Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, MN, USA. The background vocals unusually precede the lead vocals (rather than following them in the traditional manner) - this was created purely by accident as engineer Susan Rogers played back the layered vocals with incorrect intervals. Prince liked what he heard, and kept this arrangement. The track was included as the third track on the third and final disc of the on the 30 November, 1986 configuration of the Crystal Ball album, which was eventually pared down and became Sign O' The Times. -PrinceVault

FILM REVIEW

Sign ☮ the Times

Prince bounces back with bold concert movie

(no rating)

BY ANTHONY DECURTIS

Following a lengthy version of Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time" that serves as an instrumental showcase for the band, Prince and Cat exchange fantasy segments. Prince is shown backstage in a reverie that dissolves into the "U Got the Look" video, and then Cat falls asleep to the dream vision of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" that concludes with her and Prince making love as the words LOVE and SEX flash on signs above them. The film's weakest point -- much-too-long versions of "Forever in my Life" and the party raver "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" -- gives way to a rapturous finale: Prince's exquisite rendition of "The Cross."

Unfortunately, although Sign o' the Times is a thoroughly rewarding film, it's ultimate appeal is to the large corps of those already converted to Prince's cause. Prince is arguably the finest live rock act in the world today, and the hard fact is that if he's to reclaim the larger audience he gained with Purple Rain, he must actually tour. Sign o' the Times captures him nicely, but many more people deserve to confront the challenge and the playfulness Prince embodies in the flesh.

Prince's baffling brilliance
(no rating)

SIGN O' THE TIMES
PRINCE
Paisley Park/Warner Bros.

BY KURT LODER

That all sounds pretty interesting. In fact, it is. "Sign o' the Times," "Housequake," "Hot Thing" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" will be new Prince classics. "It," "Slow Love," "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" and the almost-heavy-metal "U Got the Look" are almost as good. There would be one great LP hidden in the sprawl of this double album if the songs exerted any uniform effect. Unfortunately, they don't. That's okay; one takes great songs wherever one can find them. But simple virtuosity -- mere brilliance, one might almost say -- seems too easy an exercise, at this point, for someone of Prince's extraordinary gifts. And he is beginning to repeat himself: "Play in the Sunshine" is the sort of soulful raveup he's tossed off several times before, and the little bass idea that so memorably animates the title tune crops up again in both "Hot Thing" and the mildly intriguing "Forever in My Life." This way lies decadence.

Your lies, they cut me.

It's hard to say what your absolute favourite Prince track is, but this is definitely very close to it!

He played it at Ronnie Scotts in February this year, it's the first time I have ever heard him play it live, amazing!

Love this song heart

The live version from the Sign o the times film is brilliant, how can a live version be too long? If you were there, I bet you would have wanted it go on for longer!

U won't believe this

'Forever in my Life' A plea for fidelity and love forever reveals the changing face of Prince but the minimal music neither keeps the place or lodges in the memory. End of demos. Now for the LP.

The film's weakest point???? Anthony Decurtis hang your head in shame. ;o)

Not only is it a soulful moment, it genuinely feels like a live take, following what was effectively a couple of pop videos, u got the look especially.

I loved the mash up between this and It also...

"Alright....alright...alright....alright..."

Not to mention Prince's screaming!
