there is at least one early demo that is clearly the same song but takes a more 'folky/medieval(?)' type direction! It's interesting to see how the song developed into the more gospel/soul of the album cut with it only being an acapella.

I remember reading that, in the very early days, Prince's voice was the thing he was least confident in. So, it's pretty cool that he sort of began his career showcasing only that.

Great song!

PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

He sounds like a choir of angels. The song is just as pretty today as it ever was.

.

As a multi-instrumentalist, it is ironic Prince would start out his career with an a capella number as the the first track on his first album--especially when he has so few a capella songs in his catalog ("Solo" and the backwards song on Purple Rain is all I can think of. Any others?). I'd guess "For You" was meant for some girl who was inspiring him at the time, but looking back from 2014, it's nice entertain the idea of it being a more symbolic declaration of the gift of music he would champion and share so abundantly with the world. One could also look at it as his declaration of love to Music itself.

"4 U" was a note to his fans.....

I love it. Such a unique way to open yourself up to your public on your first album. It obviously shows his spiritual side with the album showing his secular modus operandi (unless baby is about the baby Jesus and the song is a first person narrative from God). On the sad day when he releases his last recording as a living artist, I would love to see a similarly perfectly realised acapella track to end his career. Just like the Beatles had "The End" (Her Majesty is just a fun coda), on their last record (Let It Be was recorde before.) Hopefully it would be just as ethereal and not end up being "For me" or "For You" the new master. Come on Prince, capture that lightning in the bottle and record the sequel before your voice falls like the legendary BB King's Lucille has and it's too late baby. Put it in the vault and make it your last offical song. I also do not know how he will know how he can calculate his last album if he intends to record until he dies but someone can figure it out. Maybe the final album he works on when he finally passes away.

"4 U" was a note to his fans.....

A great song to start of Prince's career.

This should have been the song that Prince started off every concert with!

It stands the test of time. Unique and epic.

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I like the "Second Coming" opening better! That Controversy tour opening was epic! It showcased his gospel vocal layering much better...
