Re release When Doves Cry for gods sake ! It's 30y ! And PR.

Honestly, Prince being they elite in music busyness since decades now, I cannot understand how he treats his babies and back catalogue.

30 years Purple Rain, and it is his most important work, legacy and successful period ever. How come they guy can't cope with proud for he's worth the most, and rerelease it with big fanfare and parade ?

It would give him exactly what he needs. That much earned recognition again.

Ask any young dude these days younger that 20yo and they know Prince from Purple Rain, and his live shows.

I don't understand Warner Brothers either. Or am I wrong, aren't they interested in his back catalogue anymore ? Or how goes the inside money story ?

Anyone can refresh it ?

Prince doesnt really care all that much for looking back on the past. I guess he doesnt want to do the whole traditional re-releasing stuff when an album reaches a certain age like a lot of other artists do.

I think Prince is trying to get re-recognised by releasing new more 'hip' music with 3rdeyegirl.

Personally I think he should give some recognition to his past works, but also stay up to date and fresh. I mean, he didnt even realise it was PR's 30th birthday when he got asked about it!

Thats total bull!! All he plays at his concerts are 80s hits. I WISH he would play at least 90s and 2000 material if he won't play the new stuff. 90% of hs setlist is 80s. He completely lives in the past

Prince doesn't mind playing songs from his older albums. He just hates waxing nostalgic about earlier eras. It's why he hates talking about how older songs was written, what inspired his songs. It's why Prince canceled that special VH1 was going to do on 1999, when Lisa Coleman and Jill Jones already filmed interviews and why he didn't attend the Carnegie Hall tribute. From Prince's perspective, Google Play, iTunes and Amazon have those albums, but it there.

I think he tries to mix it up but he is also aware a lot (if not the majority) of his audience want to hear what they know. Most casual fans that go to his concerts don't know B-sides or unreleased tracks, or most of what was released on the official albums in the last ten years if we're being honest. Take the Charlotte show on 3.24.11 for instance.. a local columnist reported that the fans weren't totally happy with the set list in the article- "Prince still rules, but Charlotte fans miss hits"

Ask any Prince fan what they thought of his performance on Thursday night, and they’d probably gush – with good reason.

At 52, he looks like he’s 42, sings like he’s 32, and dances like he’s 22. He’s got Elvis Presley’s swagger, Michael Jackson’s moves, James Brown’s soul, and Liberace’s style.

He looks great in heels, in glitter, in silk, in gold, in black, in purple. His voice can go high, it can go low. He can dance on top of a grand piano and not look stupid. He turns restless legs syndrome into an asset. His New Power Generation band is electric, his three backup singers are eclectic, and he is savvy when it comes to choosing openers (here it was Anthony Hamilton, who shined brightly).

But ask those same Prince fans what they thought of his song choices – what they really thought – and I’d expect at least a little disappointment.

For every crowd-pleaser like “Kiss,” there was at least one obscure cut like “Elixer” that would take the crowd slightly out of it; for every chart-topper like “Cream,” there was a virtually unknown track like “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute).” Prince hit it on the head with his cover of Michael’s “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” but his rendition of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" was a misfire.

During his opening medley of unfortunately abbreviated snippets of songs like “When Doves Cry” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” he interrupted himself by shouting, “I got too many hits – we’ll be here all night!”

But where were those hits? Where was “Delirious”? Where was “1999”?

Wanna see the setlist?

  1. (Vanity 6 cover)
  2. (The Time cover)
  3. (The Time cover)
  4. (The Family cover)
  5. (Wild Cherry cover)
  6. (Stargard cover)
  7. (Ohio Players cover)
  8. (Bria Valente cover)
  9. Piano set
  10. Encore:
  11. (Sylvester cover)

Really? Where are the hits?? eek I count at least 17 that I would expect a person who knows Prince enough to buy a ticket to his concert to be WELL acquainted with, but I guess even "Anotherloverholeinyohead" is still obscure to most. confused

Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

I think if he were to rerelease When Doves Cry he would do like he did with Lets Go Crazy Reloaded.

Which i think could be really interesting.

Speaking of Purple Rain tracks.I dont know how Prince and 3rd Eye Girl havent done Computer Blue live yet, that song would be perfect for their sound.

It won't get a remastered release anytime soon. Perhaps not in time for its 60th anniversary. It all comes down to money in the end. Which, to be fair, is reasonable.

Based on what Prince has said in the past, he's still trying to account for much of the Purple Rain revenue upon original release (i.e., he resents the fact that not all of it went to him). The last thing he wants to see is more money going to WB. He ignores what the fans want because it would mean other people get paid. Not unreasonable but a shame for us really. Personally, I think more money should have gone to WB for the way they handled and distributed his records. Anyone who's witnessed the scattershot, piss-poor distrubtion efforts of recent years has to be sympathetic to this.

Finally, I'm still dubious about the masters ownership thing. None of us know if he already owns the PR master or if, indeed, he will ever own it. Bottom line, don't wait up.

These wishful thinking threads are bad for me. The thought of Darling Nikki with some proper thumping bass is making my heart ache.

I really don't care for remasters, I listen to these old albums maybe 1 to 3 times a year each, I can do with the versions I have. I'd buy them, sure, but I don't need them.

Now of course if they imply unreleased songs/versions and remasters of the old, crappy video shows versions we have from the 80's and a proper YT channel with the music vids in HD then I'll be more interested.

But we need P to get his shit back from WB first, everything including the side-projects, then and only then can we see remasters or box-sets.

I'm in no rush really, I've been waiting for P to open the vault for almost 20 years since he left WB, I can wait 5 or 10 more years, I have lots of good shit to listen to besides Prince ^^

A remastered Doves Cry would play well on radio today. It's Prince dude not Warners

It's clear he wants to be recognized but it's on his terms. Most of us and Warners want it presented a certain way. Prince has his way which these days unfortunately means it would be embarrassing. Just think of those 1999 remixes by Prince and how played and bad they were.

That's why it hasn't happened. Once Prince gets that master then it might MIGHT happen... But trust he will ruin it

well 'extraloveable was not horrible .. so maybe he would not butcher doves

i have recorded a punk version of doves and often play the song on acoustic around the house ..

it sounds really great on acoustic .. its too bad prince plays such horrible plastic sounding acoustic guitars .. eg the truth record .. it would be great to hear doves in a stripped down acoustic form .. if he could capture that analog tone and feel like he did with 'how come u dont call me' on piano .. an acoustic doves would come out good

but in reality .. he will butcher it like 1999
