sounds like a hit for CHER

...in 1996. I hope LA Reid isn't gassin' Prince about this song having him think it's actually going to be a pop hit. You guys really think this is the track that's going to bring him back to the top of the charts after a 20 year absence? Come on now! lol

Yes..I think this will be a pop hit..bit too much snobbery here imo..whats wrong with him releasing a lightweight dancy pop tune ?.every non fan who I have played this too thinks its great..we know its not but I for one will be up dancing to it when the next party comes along..chill out people smile

What I'd love is an extended version a la Kiss or Mountains - take in a totally different direction.

Now that's a great idea!

Indeed it is but that type of `B-side` is not done often nowadays.

Cheesy track. There is no way in hell this will be a hit. This is not "hater" talk, just reality. I listen to almost every type of music on the radio when I am out driving, and as much as people bitch and moan about the state of music on the radio, there is nothing this atrocious on ANY format radio station.

[Edited 3/13/14 17:18pm]

I'm sure your skill in driving around listening to various types of music gives you better credentials than me in choosing hit singles. My being a songwriter, and correctly predicting single release patterns for dozens of albums in multiple genres must be dumb luck.

I think it's a hit.

It may never be a hit, as most artists with real hits are 30 and younger...

So the decks are stacked against Prince....but to call it a horrible song...is humor...

Of course when Shelby shouts "Put Your Hands Up" at the top of her lungs, do you thing that is a wonderful live example of shouting???? Please.

Don'nt make me laugh. I seriously doubt you have had ANY "luck" choosing hit singles, SPECIALLY if you believe this cheesy mess of a track has hit potential. You would have no business being in the business you are supposedly in.

this song has pop hit potential .. but not in its current form .. prince again mumbles his lyrics .. cramming in too many sylables in the verses .. generally dumb lyrics .. and mostly a nothing song .. lacking that "it" hit factor that makes a song special ... it reminds me of 'guitar' another prince 'hit' with mumbly lyrics .. it wont be a hit and it wont be played again after this year unless verizon puts it on tv ..

like a lot of prince ideas .. this song COULD be a hit if he rerecorded it .. wrote some decent lyrics .. put in a few more hooks to go with the seed he has here .. and added some more vocals to the chorus ..

as is .. this song will go nowhere .

still a better song than that stoopid pretzelbodytragic crapiczel .. but still not worthy of the prince name

Judging the reaction on twitter there clear and stong audience for this type of music and people like the track, if it doesn't do it for you, let the people who enjoy have their moment. He likely won't revisit a sound like this for a while... I mean, how long ago was it that Sleep Around was released?

Change it one more time..

With the right push, it's a definite hit.

Non-fans love it. That's key. That's the response I've been getting from non-fans on Facebook etc.

He's had "finishers" co-producing with him for about 25-30 years. W&L, Levi, Ricky P, Kirky J, etc.

So the question is, is it the Zoey Deschanel version that just hit 3rdeyegirl youtube, or a full Prince version.

But they've rarely officially had producer credits. I remember Kirk having some. Certainly I can't remember any co-production credits in this century.

Not really my cup of tea.

Certainly not a 3rdEyeGirl rock track.

Assume this is Prince solo (with Zoey).

Interesting though that the clip uses the same font as 3rdEyeGirl...hmmm

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I don't think it's snobbery to have realistic expectations for a single's performance from an artist in his 50's. As someone else said, the cards are stacked against him.

For someone like him to have a top 10 hit, the song needs to be so huge that it's undeniable, or have some kind of media tie-in, or be bundled with concert ticket pre-sales for a hotly ancticpated tour (a la Madonna). This song has none of those going for it.

I do think it's both an enjoyable and catchy, albeit lightweight by Prince's standards, and that it could do well in clubs with a remix. But to think we might be hearing it in between Katy Perry and Miley on the radio just seems sooo very unlikely.

FUNKNROLL seems like a more appropriate and pleasing direction to me, though I do find this one enjoyable for what it is.

this should really have been released the very night of the premiere of his New Girl cameo.

that way it could have had it's run and by now we'd slowly be easing into the full on promo

efforts for Plectrum Electrum.

that way he could have filled up that rather weird void at the start of the year (honestly,

i already forgot that Pretzel was a single at all) and pull FunkNRoll as the true 1st single

from the 3EG project right about now.

i like this song enough, and i'm glad he released it. no gripes there at all. but i'm always

just amazed at HOW he releases stuff and WHEN. we've been building up toward a final

push in the 3EG album promotion for over a year and right at the end of it, just when we

were expecting the album to be released ANY minute, he releases a solo prince track lol

Imho it's not more or less cheesy than "Take me with You" from the 80'S, "Cream" from the 90's or "Chocolate Box" from the 00's. It's just a typical Prince song.

but with all those songs prince was acutally playing instruments biggrin

this tune is all other people to my ear. it's like mrmoops who posts

here said he did hornz and strings. josh produced those beats, that

is obvious from the livestreams we heard him on. perhaps prince is

doing that keyboard solo, but i doubt even that.

so that's why this feels like a real lightweight weird song for me -it

is as if he just sings on a track by other people.

i still like it though. nothing wrong with it. but it feels kinda 'off' in

a way, which makes me think it really is a one off single.
