Hi guys, could anyone tell me the meaning of "Get Blue"?

Hey there, it probably comes off as a silly question but what does 'BLUE' mean in the song "Get Blue"? Get unhappy? Get low? What's your take on the song? I wish I could understand exactly what he meant to say with the lyrics.

Thank you in advance =-)!

I don't know if it's a term that is used now, but back in the 60s and 70s music, movies, comedy, etc that was considered sexually explicit or risque was described as "blue". For example, porno movies were called "blue movies" or Richard Pryor was considered a "blue comedian". I've always assumed that "Get Blue" was a way of telling his woman to take their sexual activities to another level of nastiness, especially with lines like "don't hesitate...I wanna take all your inhibitions and do something taboo, get blue"

Wow, thanks for the explanation Mindbells9.

I always thought the word "blue" in the lyrics was meant as in "blues" ("express yourself like a blues singer", "get serious", "show me your true feelings", "show me what you got"). Could be a double-meaning too, but I wouldn't be surprised if Prince really just had the pornographic term in mind. razz

I always thought it was a bit of a reference to the Joni Mitchell album "Blue". She's one of his favorites . . . maybe he's singing about the mood or emotions related to that album . . .

Wow, these are all different meanings of Blue I never knew or thought of. Knowing Prince I'm sure the word could be suggesting multiple different things like you guys said.

Thanks a lot Mindbelle9, novabrkr and Se7en. Hope all of you have a great day smile !!

I'm thinking of the Louie Louie song from his "Let's Get Started" 1993 release, written by Levi Seacer Jr. and "Paisley Park." It supports the notion of what's been said here by some of the lyrics that go, "Get blue... let's do something taboo."

I love Louie Louie (whatever happened to him?) and the fact he got to work with some amazing people like Madonna, Prince, and George Michael reminds me of how good his music was. Come to think of it, makes me wanna go play some LL right now!

smile

The above pic of Louie Louie is what you look like after you've "Gotten Blue", when Prince has totally rocked your world inside and out and the only thing left to do is your best Vanity impression. Just kidding, I do love this song and wish we can see its official release in all its soaring beauty. I prefer Prince's rendition of course, Louie just doesn't elevate the song in quite the same way. I've always wondered who are the female back up singers? They do quite a lovely job as well.

I hear only Prince, but princevault says Jearlyn & Jevetta Steele are doing background vocals.

Thank you! I was beginning to think it might be Rosie and another singer, but it's too subdued for her. Love Jevetta, wonder where she is now. I jammed out to this on repeat on this morning's flight.

I thought it was pretty obvious,

It means Blue of the sense of a 'Blue Movie'. ie. get sexual, come to bed with me etc...

".......I'm in the mood, and i'm sure you are too...so Get Blue".

Love this song, very underrated IMO.
